Educational Leadership & The Art of War

An invitation to attend a BCPVPA-endorsed focus group interview to be UBC or via Skype

Are you interested in exploring the tactics that school leaders use in their daily work and in difficult situations? This is an opportunity for BC principals and vice-principals to get together to discuss educational leadership and school management strategies in an exciting new context. Dr. Fei Wang, an Assistant Professor, UBC, is conducting a study on Subversive Leadership and The Art of War, funded by the 2016 Social Science and Humanities Research Council Insight Development Grant (SSHRC IDG). The research is grounded in the strategies and tactics outlined in The Art of War, an ancient treatise attributed to the Chinese strategist Sun Tzu in the 5th century BC. The study explores the strategies that school leaders use to perform their roles and manage the challenges that they face. The research team is seeking to recruit principals and viceprincipals from BC K-12 schools to participate in a 60-90-minute focus group interview that will can be scheduled during the periods indicated above. Participation in the focus group interview will provide an opportunity to learn about how other school leaders react in different situations. All information collected for the study will be treated in strict confidence and no identifiable information will be included in any publications. If you are interested, indicate your preference and availability for participation by emailing Dr. Fei Wang at [email protected] Focus groups can be set at a time that best suits you during the following periods: February 17-25 March 1-4 March 8-11

Resource Alert Please inform your teachers to the need to reuse the Sip Smart!BC™ booklets with each class.

Sip Smart!BC™ helps teach students about sugary drinks and healthy drink choices. One complete print version of this updated program was sent to BC public schools with Grades 4, 5 and 6 in fall 2016. The materials were designed to last and be shared amongst teachers for several years. We have learned of a possible misunderstanding about the Class Set of 30 booklets. In the past, sets could be ordered so families could keep a copy of the booklet. However, for sustainability and cost reasons, replacement sets are no longer available. Please alert your teachers to the need to reuse the Sip Smart!BC™ booklets with each class, distributing and collecting them each time the program is offered. Questions or comments about this popular program may be forwarded to [email protected]

L

ast weekend, the BCPVPA hosted its annual Contract/Legal Seminar in Richmond. The seminar was for contract team representatives, many of whom are in their first year being on the contract team, from around the province. On Saturday, there were concurrent sessions on a variety of topics intended to meet the varied interests of our contract team members. Of interest to me, considering this week’s survey on workplace wellbeing was the session; Rewiring Principal/Vice-Principal Brains to Improve Mental Fitness.

The facilitator began by stating that while we have positive images of physical fitness our view of mental fitness tends to be synonymous with mental illness. The presenter used the analogy that our mental fitness could be compared to the energy contained within a battery. Our battery inputs, such as exercise, proper nutrition, and rest, should exceed battery outputs such as stress, workload, and pressure to ensure that we are always fully charged. Ideally, we should awake each morning with our batteries fully charged ready to take on the day. If there is an imbalance between outputs and inputs then we awake each morning with our batteries only partially charged. Over time, if our battery baseline continues to erode, there can be significant stresses on our mental health. A potential symptom of a dwindling battery supply was referred to as presenteeism. Preseenteism differs from absenteeism in that you are present at your workplace but are unable to engage and perform at a high level because your mental health and wellbeing are not at optimal levels. The results of the survey attached to this week’s eNews (see page one) will help to guide and direct the work of the BCPVPA Mental Health and Wellness Committee. The survey, intended to take approximately 15 minutes, is designed to provide a snapshot regarding workplace wellbeing and work intensification. For the purposes of our survey we have defined work intensification as an increase in workload or a compression in the amount of time to complete the designated tasks. The survey will be open and accessible for two and half weeks. The Mental Health and Wellness Committee will be carefully reviewing the results to develop strategies to better support the mental health and wellness of our colleagues. Have a great weekend, Kevin
