Heritage Open Days

Thursday 6th to Sunday 9th September Heritage Open Days is England’s biggest heritage festival celebrating our fantastic history, architecture and culture. Step back in time with free guided tours and discover more about Sir Richard Arkwright and Cromford Mills. The theme for this year is Extraordinary Women and European Year of Cultural Heritage.

Thursday 6th September, 1.30-3pm. Free. ‘Women in the Mill’ talk. Women made up the majority of the mill workforce, but what was life like in this newly mechanised industry with their children working alongside them? This talk explores working life for women in industry in the 18th century. Thursday 6th September, 7pm. Cost £7. ‘Cromford’s European Connection - Bruegelmann and Ratingen’. Johann Gottfried Bruegelmann introduced powered cotton spinning to continental Europe just as Sir Richard Arkwright did to Britain, and to the world. This talk explores the similarities and differences in their careers, lives and the geopolitical situation facing them both. Friday 7th September, 1.30-3pm. Free. ‘Rule and Riot’ tour. Find out more about law, order and industrial espionage during Georgian times, and just how strict life was working at the mills. Saturday 8th September, 11am-12.30pm. Free. ‘Cotton to Canals’ tour. Come on a journey of discovery about the dramatic changes in travel over the last 200 years as transportation expanded with industrial demands. Saturday 27th October, 1-2.30pm. Cost £5. ‘Rule and Riot’ tour. Find out more about law, order and industrial espionage during Georgian times, and just how strict life was working at the mills. A leisurely guided one mile walk down through this wooded gorge of outstanding natural beauty, exploring stone mill ruins, ponds and waterfalls that make up this unique historical site. Tuesday 30th October, 1.30-3.30pm. Cost £5. Matlock Bath photography walk. Only ever seen Matlock Bath as you drive through it? This is your chance to go beyond the A6 and see some of the hidden gems of this most photogenic little town. There are beautiful landscapes, high viewpoints and lots of interesting buildings.
