Letters to Soldiers Fourth graders at Westhampton Beach Elementary School supported the troops by sending them poems of admiration this past Memorial Day. Bravery, strength and courage were common themes in the poems that were written. Students said they thought about why they were thankful for the soldiers and wrote about those things. “We were learning about Memorial Day and I thought this would be nice,” fourth-grade teacher Toni Stanek said. The students submitted the poems to an online forum on the Department of Defense’s website, where soldiers overseas can read them.

SUMMER 2009

Pedals for the Planet What began as a simple class assignment in Jok Kommer’s Environmental Science class at Westhampton Beach High School turned into an opportunity to make a difference and a demonstration on how you can use less energy on a daily basis. In class, the students worked together to look at things that have an impact on the environment and ways the students themselves could reduce their carbon footprint. A carbon footprint is a measure of the effect you have on the climate in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases you produce. Many of a person’s daily activities generate carbon emissions, which have an impact on the health of the environment. Based on that classroom activity, senior Danielle Palmaccio and junior Rachel Lucas organized an event entitled “Pedals for the Planet.” The two girls worked together to promote and recruit their fellow students to ride their bicycles to and from school for one day. In total, more than 35 students participated in the one-day event.

ROVing Along Four students from Westhampton Beach Middle School were chosen to participate in Mystic Aquarium’s Immersion Learning Live Ocean Exploration Webcasts. The four students – Antonio Birk, Lucy DiBenedetto, Declan Bean, and Jessica Mendelson – along with their teachers, April Pokorny and Kathy Haack, traveled to Mystic, Connecticut and participated in five live webcasts, spent time with Dr. Robert Ballard, world famous oceanographer/explorer, and worked in teams to design and build a ROV - a remotely operated vehicle. Each team’s ROV had to be neutrally buoyant, navigate through a tunnel and back out, and pick up pieces of PVC pipe from the bottom of the Aquarium’s lagoon. “Both of our teams met each Westhampton Beach teacher Kathy Haack, eighth grader Jessica Mendelson, sixth grader Lucy DiBenedetto, Dr. Robert Ballard, sixth grader Antonio challenge successfully during their amazing day,” stated Ms. Pokorny. Birk, teacher April Pokorny, and eighth grader Declan Bean. Westhampton Beach was one of only five schools invited to participate in the event.

Tech Day Fourth graders at Westhampton Beach Elementary School had the opportunity to invite their parents to school to participate in their Technology Expo on May 28. Students shared with parents all of the technology they use in the classroom from day to day. In Ms. MacLeod's class, parents were called to the front of the room to participate in an interactive math lesson using PowerPoint. Parents also saw how the interactive whiteboards are used in the classrooms and sat with students while they worked on their laptops.

French Lessons Fourteen juniors in Melissa Llewellyn’s 4H French class at Westhampton Beach High School visited elementary students in Adriana Sedano’s French class to teach them about the weather. The high school students created a class lesson relating to weather expressions and traveled to the elementary school to present the lesson and showcase posters they had created. “This was the first time we have done something like this,” said Ms. Sedano. “But Westhampton Beach High School juniors John we definitely hope to continue Mitchell, Ferdyan Budhidharma, Tyler Giancola, Robert Griffon, and Christian Trapani. more of it next year!”

Celebrating the Class of 2009 As the Westhampton Beach High School seniors marched onto the Carl Hansen Memorial Football Field in a sea of green and white, parents and invited guests proudly applauded. Members of the Class of 2009 had arrived to begin the schools' 101st Commencement Exercises. The Boards of Education, and central and high school administration, took their places on the dais as the high school concert band played “Pomp and Circumstance.” Following the Pledge of Allegiance and “The Star Spangled Banner", which was sung by Mia Mulvey with accompaniment by the seniors in the American Sign Language class, Westhampton Beach Board of Education President Aram Terchunian and Superintendent of Schools Lynn Schwartz addressed the class for the final time. “It is clear this graduating class has left its mark on our school and community,” said Superintendent Schwartz. “You are ready to go forward for as a 6

class you are destined for greatness.” Speaking before their classmates were Valedictorian Leah Buletti, Salutatorian Jeffrey Kabot, Hayley Fink who shared her original poem entitled “Remembering,” and Joelle Dorskind who recited the class history. “All things in life are what you make of them” said Leah. Added Jeffrey, “I dare all of us to dream. Dream of something new, something great, something you.” Also offering words of encouragement and a farewell to the graduating seniors was Principal Christopher Herr. “Remember to work as hard as you can to get the end result you desire.” Following the presentation of their diplomas and declaration by Principal Herr, the Westhampton Beach High School Senior Class of 2009 recessed from the field as Westhampton Beach High School Alumni, ready to take on the world that awaits them.

Westhampton Beach High School junior Mark Podlas recently became the first Westhampton Beach baseball player to be selected to participate in the Perfect Game National Showcase. This invitation-only exhibition took place at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota, home of the Minnesota Twins, from June 13-14. With his participation, Mark is now considered one of the top 200 junior baseball players in the country. Mark has been the Hurricanes starting center fielder since the eighth grade, and made All-League every year. This year, Mark was named All-County and had a .484 batting average, with five home runs. He is currently being recruited by the top collegiate baseball programs in the country. According to their website, close to 85% of the players at the Perfect Game National Showcase end up signing with the top programs in the country. The National Showcase has also seen more draft picks and first-round draft picks than any other individual event in baseball over the past seven years. 11
