As part of the largest law enforcement agency in the southeast United States, the Specialized Training Unit has been providing outstanding practical and innovative training programs for law enforcement since 1986. Miami West/FL TP Cost: $99 single/double This course will introduce the student to the mathematical theory behind the formulae used to determine the origin of blood sources and the scientific principles that dictate the motion of blood. Completion of this course will enable the student to analyze, interpret, and testify more effectively in cases where bloodstain analysis is performed. Hands-on exercises will be utilized to reinforce principles learned in the classroom and will include instruction in the use of BackTrack® computer program for bloodstain pattern analysis. Public Information Officer

This course has been designed for law enforcement and public safety personnel, administrators, public information officers, and others who represent their departments to the news media. Participants will review media policy, media operations, and their relationship with the news media. They will also participate in on-camera interviews, prepare news releases, and examine the role of the public information officer. The working environment of television, radio and print organizations will also be explored. Specialized topics include crisis situations, disasters, dealing with the national and international media, and other important media-related issues.

This 44-hour course will instruct the student in identifying bloodstain pattern evidence at the crime scene. Students will participate in numerous hands-on scenerios in order to learn how to properly interpret, document, preserve and reconstruct bloodstain pattern evidence. Cost: $149 single/double This 2-week course is open to all levels of law enforcement officers and fire service personnel. Students must hold a current Advanced Open Water Diver rating to apply. The course will combine classroom instruction with practical in-water application. The student will participate in the removal of vehicles from lakes, rock pits, and canals, as well as searching the hull of a freighter at the Port of Miami. The student will be exposed to underwater search and recovery, underwater video and photography, underwater crime scene processing and the use of underwater lift bags. Class size is limited; early registration is recommended. This class is eligible for salary incentive money for Florida officers.

Cost: $99 single/double This course consists of a series of workshops in fingerprint evidence for detectives, crime scene investigators, and identification technicians. This training will provide skill enhancement workshops with updated techniques in the detection, development, collection and preservation of fingerprint evidence. Special emphasis is placed upon the development and collection of latent fingerprints. The following techniques are included: Superglue applications for the laboratory and the field, Small Particle Reagent, various methods for processing the adhesive side of tape, and many other methods to chemically or mechanically process latent prints. This course includes a one-day fingerprint photography workshop.

Gun Bounty Program

Cost: $149 single/double This 32-hour course will explain how and why the Gun Bounty Program came into effect and how it has proven to be an effective tool in crime prevention and save lives through the recovery of illegal weapons in the hands of criminals. Comparisons to other crime prevention programs nationwide and locally, will be discussed. All aspects of the program will be explained, including field work, to show the importance of the ongoing marketing and the requirements necessary to have a successful Gun Bounty Program. All of the legal considerations will be covered to include case law, current gun statutes, internal affairs concerns and protocol to investigate the gun bounty tips received through Crime Stoppers. Furthermore, at the conclusion of the course all attendees will have the tools necessary on how to implement and utilized the program as an effective aid in crime prevention in their jurisdiction. Social Networking will be introduced as an effective way to communicate to the community and market crime prevention tools to the community.

This week long course will show you how to investigate forged deeds and satisfactions; identity theft and real estate fraud schemes defalcations; builder bailout schemes; credit for sale schemes and condo conversion fraud. Practical exercises involving real cases will be presented as part of the class. In addition, specific skill sets will be taught including net worth analysis, concealed income analysis, using Excel and other Microsoft products to handle and sort large amounts of raw data for investigation; how to trace money from illegal transactions and understanding how and when to use specific state and federal laws to prosecute offenders.

Cost: $99 single/double This 3-day course has been designed to meet the demands placed on the modern-day cargo theft police investigator or industry security specialist. Experts in each field will discuss the various investigative strategies used by law enforcement and loss prevention professionals to combat cargo theft. Instructors with decades of experience in their respective areas will provide detailed instruction with practical application formats useful to the investigator on the street. Cutting edge initiatives will be discussed and presentations will be offered, which include a review of some “tools of the trade.” This course will provide the line investigator with valuable ideas and strategies that have been employed successfully by the TOMCATS and other law enforcement groups dedicated to cargo theft investigations. Crime Scene Investigations II

This course is designed to enhance skills obtained in our Crime Scene Investigations course and provide the student with extensive hands-on practical experience in various workshops including, for example, trace evidence and tire track standards. The goal of this course is to develop the investigator’s skills in crime scene assessment and evidence collection. Topics covered include a courtroom testimony workshop, investigation of police shootings, and detection and collection of serological and related evidence, including fingerprints in blood.

The number one reason why most crime scene investigations fail, is that there is inadequate crime scene processing. This course was developed as a refresher workshop for some crime scene officers, or for the new officers with limited exposure and experience in crime scene processing. This course was designed to assist in the preparation for the IAI Crime Scene Investigator Certification – CCSI, CCSA, or CSCSA examination. Cost: $99 single/double This 3-day course tought by Retired Miami-Dade Police Department, Deputy Director Steve Rothlein, is designed to identify the causes and impact of misconduct in a law enforcement agency. Strategies to prevent misconduct from invading a police agency including Early Intervention Systems (EIS) will be discussed. Participatns will become familiar with the history of misconduct, what causes a good officer to make bad decisions and how to implement an EIS. Discussions on the area of supervisory liability, sexual misconduc, policy failure and what defines police corruption and how to conduct an audit or sting. The course will also provide the participants with an understanding of "Garrity" and the basic concepts of an internal affairs investigation. Cost: $99 single/double This course is designed to teach skills needed to photographically document crime scenes. Photographic theories will be discussed and students will take part in practical hands-on exercises that will reinforce skills learned in class. Topics include equipment selection, basic and advanced lighting techniques (including electronic flash, photography of luminescent Luminol, Infrared and Reflected Ultra-Violet Photography), close-up photography, photography of threedimensional evidence, alternate light source photography, and photography of aircraft crash scenes. Although this course makes use of digital cameras, it has application for agencies using traditional filmbased technology as well as those already using digital.

This course will take the new and experienced homicide investigator through the different aspects of investigating a homicide crime scene. A thermal imaging lecture and demonstration is included. Due to the amount of handson training in this course, enrollment is limited to 25 students. Cancellation Policy Due to rising costs and expenses generated by students who register for our courses and do not attend without notification, it has become necessary to institute the following cancellation policy: Note: No-shows (including those who cancel after 3pm on the Thursday preceding the course) will be invoiced the full registration fee. In order to qualify for the full refund, students (or their employing agencies) must cancel attendance no less than two weeks prior to the commencement of the course. Cancellations must be received via e-mail and/or fax to the attention of the course coordinator. A confirmation of receipt and a cancellation number must be obtained from the coordinator. To qualify for an Academic Achievement Award in Law Enforcement Career Development, the student must have attended a minimum of 240 hours in the Specialized Training Unit’s courses. The Academic Achievement Award Criminal Investigations
