Heritage...Romance...Forever... Gretna Green is a village on the Scottish border that is world famous as a romantic wedding destination. First over the border, it became a haven for young lovers following the 1754 Marriage Act introduced in England and Wales. You were forbidden to marry without your parents’ permission if you were under 21. So the young and in love began eloping to Scotland, where it was much easier to marry.

Now fondly recognised as a romantic wedding destination, you can still marry in three historic marriage houses: two that give you Gretna Green on your marriage certificate and one that gives you Gretna on your certificate.

Also in Gretna Green is the manor house of Gretna Hall, built for Gretna Estate in 1710, and later a coaching inn in 1825, it was the first official stop in Scotland for travelling stagecoaches and private carriages. Gretna Hall was also frequented by run-aways desperate to marry, but forbidden to do so back home. It witnessed many romantic elopements as a venue for aristocratic weddings. The picturesque courtyard of this majestic manor house is the venue for three atmospheric marriage rooms. The Old Toll Bar, Gretna, became part of the run-away wedding legacy in 1830, when a bridge was built over the Sark River, redirecting most of the traffic that way into Scotland. The resident toll-keeper in the First House in Scotland became very busy arranging marriages for the many desperate couples that arrived on his doorstep. Today this intimate venue, steeped in history, creates a very special experience for your wedding day.

Gretna Green is synonymous with Anvil Weddings and it is the Famous Blacksmiths Shop where the tradition of an Anvil Wedding began. Legend has it that if you touch the famous Gretna Green anvil it brings you good fortune in affairs of the heart. It was here that the blacksmith would repair and make tools for the farms and shoe the horses. From 1754 the blacksmith in Gretna Green became notorious for a different kind of forging: joining couples in marriage. Marry in this ancient building, virtually untouched since runaway weddings began and full of magical charm.

Planning Your Wedding & Legal Requirements Arranging your wedding with us is easy: decide on your date; choose your ceremony venue and your banqueting venue and preferred hotel for accommodation. You will also need to consider if you wish to have a minister or registrar. Do not worry though, we will help and guide you through each stage.

Your Marriage Schedule

We will advise you on dates that are available and make a provisional booking for you. Provisional bookings are held for two weeks.

You will both need to complete an M10 Form for the Gretna Registrars to create your Marriage Schedule. The earliest you can submit this form is 3 months before the date of your marriage or at the latest, 29 clear days. For Civil Partnerships a CP10 Form must be completed by both you and your partner and submitted to the Gretna Registry Office.

The Famous Blacksmiths Shop is the place where it all began…the very first runaways arrived at the crossroads where the blacksmith’s workshop stands. Breathless, they entered the building to be met by the ‘Blacksmith Priest’ who quickly conducted the marriage ceremony. This little building is famed the world over for Gretna Green weddings and it is here that the ritual of the anvil ceremony began as the blacksmith, by striking the anvil, forged lives together. You wedding will be sealed by that same magical moment.

A truly iconic and historic Gretna Green wedding venue, where you marry over the oldest marriage anvil in use today. The Original Marriage Room in the Famous Blacksmiths Shop remains virtually untouched, presented to you as it was in the mid-1700s when the “Blacksmith Priest” married runaways over the legendary anvil. HISTORIC MARRIAGE HOUSE

A private manor house built in 1710, Gretna Hall then became a coaching inn from later that century. It was the first official stop in Scotland for travelling stagecoaches and private carriages. John Linton leased the Inn early in 1825 and he made Gretna Hall a safe and dignified sanctuary for aristocratic runaway couples. It hosted numerous high profile and aristocratic elopements in days gone by. This historic venue is steeped in the traditions of Gretna Green.

As a modern day venue, weddings take place in atmospheric marriage rooms in the original coach-house and courtyard. The wedding rooms are full of character and in keeping with tradition, each room features an anvil, which to this day seals your marriage in Gretna Green. The gardens at Gretna Hall are extensive and provide an ideal backdrop for photographs, with an ornamental water feature, Gazebo, Kissing Gate and ‘Gretna Green’ sign alongside the large lawns and woodland.

With its rustic ancient flagstone floor and whitewashed walls this atmospheric room conjures up images of couples arriving in horse-drawn carriages in days gone-by. Today the magnificent 19th century carriage, set behind the legendary Gretna Green anvil, makes a stunning background for photography.

The Courtyard at Gretna Hall Prices from £350 Accommodates up to 80 guests seated The Courtyard Room is an elegant contemporary venue set overlooking the historic 300 year old courtyard at Gretna Hall. The Old Toll Bar

The Water Gardens, with views over the Solway Firth, offer an outstanding location for your wedding ceremony and provide the perfect backdrop for your wedding photography. The Old Toll Bar - First House in Scotland Prices from £225

In 1830 a by-pass road saw trade dwindle at Gretna Green. The traffic was diverted from the village and over the ‘new’ Sark Bridge. At this point the Toll Bar known as Allison's Bank Toll became the first house in Scotland. The toll keeper, John Murray intercepted couples travelling across the Sark Bridge and for a small fee performed the ceremony himself.
