Welcome to our latest newsletter. Packed full of information, we hope that you find it both useful and informative. If your organisation would like to have an event or anything else featured in our newsletter please email us the details and any picture you might want us to use.

As the clocks go forward, daffodils continue to bloom and an early Easter passes by, many of us are assessing the accuracy of our 2015-16 budget predictions and repeating the process for 2016-17. At CommUNITY Barnet our current practice is for the board to agree a base budget defined on guaranteed income which is then reviewed every quarter and adjusted for new income such as grants, commissions and traded services. This pragmatic approach ensures a 'no surprises' presentation to the board which acts as a reassurance for all of us in this continuously challenging financial time. However, the sudden resignation of Ian Duncan-Smith protesting about the proposed introduction of the Personal Independence Payments (PIPs) to replace Disability Living Allowance from January 2017 will be worth keeping a close eye on for a multitude of reasons including what will replace the PIP and how will the savings now be made by Government. We have included a briefing from ACEVO on the Chancellor's latest budget which many regard has been reasonably supportive to the charity sector – however ACEVO’s Director of Public Policy has described it as a budget of ‘booby traps and sugared pills’ – have a read of his briefing and see what you think. As many of you know the National Minimum Wage increased to £6.70 for people aged over 21. One of the new measures introduced in the Chancellor’s budget was the confirmation of the Government’s intention to introduce a new, compulsory National Living Wage from April 2016. This is will be applicable to workers aged 25 and above, the initial rate will be £7.20 per hour, with a target of increasing to more than £9 per hour by 2020. The NMW will remain in place, with the NLW being a “top up” for those workers aged 25 and over. Finally, Re Ltd held its Small Business Breakfast on 16 March – called ‘Doing Business with the Council’ where it explained how Barnet Council have simplified the procurement process to make it easier for smaller suppliers to do business with the council. Please have a look at the presentation. CommUNITY Barnet will be speaking with Re about organising a ‘Tender Preparation Workshop’ later in the year which I hope many of you will attend. Julie

CommUNITY Barnet Funders' Fair - March 2016

We were pleased to welcome Big Lottery Fund, The City Bridge Trust, The Eleanor Palmer Trust, Hammerson, The Hendonian Charitable Trust, The Jesus Hospital Charity and John Lyon’s Charity to our Funders’ Fair in March. Over 70 people listened to presentations and participated in a question and answer session with the funders. Individual surgeries with funders were scheduled for forty organisations. This event followed on from our New Year New Funding Master Class, held in January for Barnet charities and not-for-profit organisations. In their advice and guidance, the funders emphasized the need for applicants to provide evidence of the need for the project to show, “this is what we want to change and this is how we plan to do it”. Jane Sterland, Funding Officer said that Big Lottery Fund is keen to see, “people in the lead of improving their lives and communities”. More information is in the Fund’s new Strategic Framework for 2015-21. Big Lottery Fund People in the Lead One participant said, “The event was informative and engaging. I understand what I need to do to be successful in applying for a grant, and it was great to have a chance to talk directly to a funder.” We were pleased to receive such positive feedback from participants of the Masterclass run by CommUNITY Barnet staff. Participants said, “Most helpful ... time very well spent.... informative constructive and helpful ... relevant to all … I now know what I don’t know and I know how to change that!” To view the presentations from the day, click here. Our Place in Colindale Our Place puts communities at the heart of service delivery in their area and involves local partners within a neighbourhood coming together with local people to identify the issues that matter most to them. Our Place partnerships develop plans to tackle these issues and have the potential to influence how local budgets are spent, redesigning and potentially commissioning, managing or delivering services locally – revolutionising the way their neighbourhood works. The Our Place approach builds on the achievements of the Neighbourhood Community Budgets (NCB) programme which piloted this approach in 2012/13 in 12 areas with the support of the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG). The 12 pilots (now Our Place Pioneers) each produced an Operational Plan and are now at various stages of implementation. This is what we have been doing in Colindale.

Barnet Giving Barnet Giving is a new local scheme for local people to give time, skills and money in support of local causes. It’s led by two Barnet charities, Barnet Centre for Independent Living and CommUNITY Barnet. It will bring together local people, communities, charities and businesses to raise funds. We will then develop a grants programme for local not-for-profit organisations and activities. We want local people to be at the lead of this new initiative, so in August we recruited an Advisory Panel of local people to advise and develop the grant-making priorities. It’s important that we have up-to-date information about local needs, so we held two consultation events in September 2015 to ask local people what they considered the needs and gaps for local people in their area. Our independent Chairperson of the Advisory Panel is Toby Blume. We have just recruited our Development Worker, Ken Gibson. Our next steps are to launch our website and start our fund-raising initiatives. If you would like to get involved, to help us fundraise, to volunteer or just simply to find out more, please do contact [email protected] or on 020 8359 2444.
