PLEIN AIR SERIES

This summer step out of your studio to become a Plein Air Artist, striving to capture the moment and the incomparable experience of ‘being there’, in the great outdoors. Through the En Plein Air Workshop Series, the Leighton Art Centre invites beginner and professional artists to come and practice with a variety of mediums and techniques.

IMPRESSIONS The Leighton Art Centre invites you to come learn and create with some of the artists participating in the exhibition Impressions: A Printmaking Exhibition. The exhibition runs from June 24 to September 24, 2017.

TRANSFORMATIONS Exhibiting artist, Rachelle LeBlanc will host a 3-day intensive class on rug hooking and the design process. For some this will be their first time creating their own rug hooking pattern and you don’t need to know how to draw or paint to take this workshop. You just need to be open to trying. Transformations takes place from August 12 to September 24, 2017

TALKS The Leighton Art Centre hosts informational group sessions and talks revolving around art appreciation, artist career development, history and our surrounding landscape.

Transparent Watercolour Portraits Weekend June 17 - 18 | 10 am - 4 pm Workshop: $185

Instructor Rex Beanland invites you to explore portrait watercolor painting. Our goal will be to capture those intimate moments and gestures that suggest the personality of the subject. You will come away with more confidence, new insights and skills for handling watercolour. (Supplies required)

Are you curious about Artist Residences? Local and international, artist residencies offer learning experiences for artists of all levels in a wide variety of settings. Artist Barbara Amos will address the search parameters, the application process and provide an overview of experiences from local through to national and international residencies.

Wild Plants & Human Survival - A Nature Treasure Hunt Sat, June 24| 10 am - 12:30 pm

Wish to have your artwork analysed and interpreted by others to receive a fresh view in a positive environment? This workshop is open to all artists, from beginners to professionals. Session will be led by artist Doug Swinton.

Workshop: $55 family (2 adults & 2 kids 8+) Ever wonder what the role of wild plants was for the survival of humans in Alberta throughout history? Let’s travel back to the early 1800s to explore and role-play how different groups of people have used both native and introduced plants as food, medicine, tools, jewellery, and dye. By following clues and your guide, Julie Walker will take you on a Full Circle Adventure throughout the Leighton Art Centre landscape. Artist and instructor Michelle Wiebe invites you to join us in exploring ways to document your travels with creative flair!

Reductive Linocut - Weekend July 8 - 9 | 10 am - 3 pm Workshop: $125

In this two-day workshop, artist and instructor Carrie Phillips Kieser will guide you through the process of creating an image on linoleum to produce a small edition of reductive relief prints. (most supplies

Building Nests for Local Birds Sun, July 9 | 1 - 3 pm Workshop: $20 - $35

Do you enjoy hearing the chirping of birds in the morning? Are you curious about the types of birds that may create their nests in your backyard? The Leighton Art Centre invites you to come and build your own birdhouse with the guidance and supervision of instructor, Jim Critchley. Passionate about birds, Jim will discuss behaviors and ecology of the Mountain Blue bird as well as the other birds that may like to nest in your new birdhouse (bring your own hammer).

Adult supervision is require for children under 10 years old.

Introduction to Itajime, Japanese Paper Tie-Dyeing Technique July 15 | 10 am - 4 pm Workshop: $125

Learn intricate traditional patterns and processes while exploring various dye and coloring possibilities for paper! Itajime can be highly skilled and controlled but always also offers the unexpected. Susan Kristoferson will give you the opportunity to create a Japanese style “stab bound” book with the itajime paper as a cover towards the end of the workshop. (supplies included)

Acrylic and Oil Painting Sat. July 22 | 10 am - 4 pm

Workshop: $75 (supplies not included) Join us and our invited artist-instructor Doug Swinton in experienced that thrill of painting on location with acrylic and oil paint. Throughout the workshop, you will paint 2 or 3 paintings on location. Towards the end of the workshop, participants will engage in a small show and tell. Doug will focus on the process of setting up, composition in plein air painting and filtering out all the un-necessaries.

Monoprinting with a Printing Press Sat, July 29 | 10 am - 12:30 pm Workshop: $30 |$15 youth |$65 family

Dive into the fascinating world of the printmaker with artist Carole Bondaroff. Participants will explore the realm of self-expression through the process of monoprinting, a form of printmaking where the image can only be printed once. Perfect for children and adults alike! (all supplies included)

DSLR Landscape Photography Weekend Aug 26 - 27| 9:30 am - 4 pm Workshop: $275 (Saturday meals included)

Photographer Neil Zeller is proud to present his DSLR Landscape Fundamentals. Register today for a late summer weekend of DSLR camera basics and practical landscape photography lessons in class and on the grounds at Leighton Art Centre overlooking the beautiful foothills and rocky mountains. Saturday session runs from 9:30 am -to 9 pm, includes catered lunch and supper.

Engraving Made Easy - Weekend Aug 26 - 27 | 10 am - 4 pm Workshop: $115 | $130 Adult + Youth

Engravings have long been a tradition in printmaking. Participants will learn simple dry-point etching techniques from artist Eveline Kolijn. Use plexi-glass plates or old CD’s to create a print with the sophisticated look of an engraving.This technique is non-toxic. The instructor will ensure one-on-one instruction and is willing to guide personal project idea towards completion. (all specialized supplies included)

Shibori Patterning and Dyeing - 2 Days Sep 10 & 17| 10 am - 4 pm

Mixed Media Printmaking - Weekend Sep 23 10 am - 4 pm & Sep 24 1 - 4 pm

Think tie-dye taken to the extreme! : Shibori is an ancient Japanese technique using stitched, tied, folded, rolled, and blocked resists. Susan Fae Haglund and Dana Bush invite you to join them in a two-day workshop to discover and experiment with Shibori patterning and dyeing techniques.

Add colour to your linocut printmaking through a variety of mediums and techniques. Join Michelle Wiebe as she covers a number of approaches one can take with mixed media printing and leave class with your own carved block, several one-ofa-kind mixed media prints, and the skills to keep incorporating printmaking into your art practice.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY: Please note there is a NO REFUND policy on all Leighton Art Centre workshops. A refund will be only be issued to participants if the workshop is canceled by the workshop coordinator due to insufficient enrollment or extreme weather conditions. Finding the Design Process: Rug Hooking Sep 22 - 24 | 10 am - 4 pm Workshop: $415 | $385 before Aug 4

The Leighton Art Centre invites you to join us in a 3-day intensive workshop led by exhibiting artist, Rachelle Leblanc. Students will learn to translate a photograph to a design, color plan, and begin to develop their own style as an artist. Rachelle will walk everyone through her process from beginning to end so that participants leave with the ability to design and create patterns of their own. Rachelle creates an atmosphere full of reflective learning and quiet encouragement so that students can find their inner voice and translate it into their own art. The class will explore the human figure and its proportions, basic composition, choosing an effective subject, color planning tools, the use of color when hooking skin tones, hair and clothing. Demonstrations on a dyeing technique called “under dyeing”. Rachelle will also demonstrate her finishing technique called “Gallery Finish”, and how to hook without a frame when using a latch hook will all be visited.
