Dreaming Milan The city seen through contemporary photography City of Milan Alinari 24 ORE – (24 ORE Group) Blurb.com A professional opportunity for creative photographers to narrate the many aspects of Milan.

The project Dreaming Milan – The city seen through contemporary photography is a project seeking to discover talented creative authors capable of “narrating” the city of Milan in its many positive aspects through photography. The project will contribute to a collection of images aimed at creating a new vision and perception of the city. The selected artists (from 10 to 20) will be invited to present their portfolio of work to five industry professionals (directors of magazines, agencies and galleries). Each finalist will receive an award of 500 euro and will be a special guest at a press conference presenting the project and his or her work. The finalists’ work will become part of a photographic archive (all authors will be credited) that the City of Milan will use for institutional and promotional purposes. Any commercial use of the images will be agreed upon separately. Furthermore, a book documenting the project and featuring some images from each selected photographer will be published. In case of later commercial distribution of the book, the winning photographers and the promoters of the competition will negotiate the proceeds.

Who may participate The project Dreaming Milan – The city seen through contemporary photography is open to authors, photographers and artists of age 18 and older, with proven expressive ability.

What it offers Participating in the formation of the new photographic archive of Milan offers a concrete opportunity for professional and artistic exposure: a) Each selected author (between 10 and 20 depending on the number of submissions) will receive a 500 euro award. Furthermore, the winning

entrants will be invited to a personal meeting with five industry professionals: a representative of the City of Milan, a representative of the Alinari Archives (24 ORE Group), the director of a nationally distributed magazine, an art director of an advertising agency, and the director of an art gallery, who will review the selected photographers’ portfolios. The finalists will also be presented to the media on the occasion of the press conference presenting the project Dreaming Milan – The city seen through contemporary photography. The name of the author will be cited in every use of the selected images. The City of Milan will seek a separate agreement for the reproduction of the images—including any commercial use—that exceed its institutional, promotional and communications purposes, negotiating fees directly with the photographer. The winning finalists will also receive a voucher (worth 50 euro) towards the printing of a Blurb.com personal book to use within two months of the end of competition. b) Authors participating in the competition who are not among the selected finalists retain the photographic rights on their images but authorize the City of Milan to keep a low-resolution digital copy (480x480 pixels, watermarked) of the submitted images as well as the contact information of the author in a digital archive (MediagalleryCGE), such that if in the future one or more of these images are deemed by the City of Milan or one of its partners to be useful, the Author may be contacted and, if he/she desires, transfer or grant authorization for their use in accordance with the payment of previously agreed upon fees. c) A book will be published (in collaboration with Alinari and Blurb.com) with images from the winning entries. A copy of the book will be presented to each winning photographer and a limited number of copies will be distributed free of charge on the day of the public presentation of the winners. Any prospective commercial use of the book will be negotiated by the photographers, the City of Milan, Alinari, and Blurb.com on the day of the finalists’ presentation of their portfolio. If an agreement cannot be reached among all parties, the book will be sold online at Blurb.com (for the cost of printing the volume) solely for promotional use, in which case the promoters will be exempt from paying further use fees to the photographers. d) Each participant, including those who do not win a prize, will receive via e-mail at the end of the competition a 50% voucher (worth up to 37 euro) for use towards the creation and printing of a personal book via the Blurb.com website, provided that the entrant has fulfilled the terms of participation for the competition (postage fees are not included and are not subject to discount). This discount will be valid for up to two months following the end of the competition.

e) The website of the competition will present—freely accessible and without charge—a suitable number of selected images from the announced winners that will document the project. In all cases the name of the author will be cited in accordance with the usual terms of use.

Requirements Eligible images should present the city of Milan and its inhabitants in their many positive aspects, as described in detail in the list of subjects included below (themes of the images). Participation is free and without cost. Authors participating in the competition who are not among the selected finalists will not forfeit the photographic rights to their images but will authorize the City of Milan to keep a low-resolution digital copy (see above). Authors selected to contribute to the creation of a new institutional archive (see above) grant the City of Milan nonexclusive rights for not less than 35 and not more than 70 images, which will be used for noncommercial purposes such as institutional, promotional and communications activities. “Nonexclusive” permission shall mean that the Author remains the owner of the images, enjoying the free and individual right to use and to sell them. Should the images for which nonexclusive use has been granted to the City of Milan for institutional, promotional and communications purposes be proposed for commercial use, a separate payment will be forthcoming in accordance with fees previously agreed with the photographer.

Promoters Since the creation of a photographic archive on Milan is the result of a partnership between Alinari and the City of Milan, the primary contact for the Authors regarding the image management will be Alinari, who will actively follow the entire project. For this reason, Alinari is the agency legally responsible for the management of all data. Alinari will provide services exclusively to the City of Milan and will not distribute collected materials to third parties. Blurb.com will participate in collaboration with Alinari for the creation of a book documenting the event.

The promoters reserve the right to communicate changes in the terms of these rules in the event of unforeseen problems due to factors beyond their control, which will be posted on the website of the competition.

Jury The selection of the winning authors (and of eventual special prizes) is the final decision of the jury, presided over by Alinari 24 ORE (24 ORE Group) with the participation of the City of Milan and the Associazione Nazionale Fotografi Professionisti TAU Visual.

Book Presentation The winning authors (between 10 and 20) will be invited to Milan for a professional meeting to exhibit their personal portfolios to the following five representatives: 1) Salvatore Carruba, Managing Director of the Alinari 24 ORE (24 ORE Group) Photographic Archives. Moreover, Alex Brunori is board member of ADCI (Art Directors Club Italiano). 5) Filippo Percassi, Director of the Galleria Monica de Cardenas in Milan. In the event that one of the professionals mentioned above becomes unavailable, the promoters of Dreaming Milan will seek a suitable equivalent replacement.
