We use three different bands for our course fees. The full fee for a course will be advertised as Band A. If you are a Derbyshire Goldcard holder, you will pay the Band B price for Community Learning. In most cases, we offer reduced fees for those on certain benefits at Band C.

How can I join? Most courses are available to book through the Derbyshire County Council website or you can visit or telephone your local centre below.

How can I pay? Payments can be made online through the web or in person at your local centre. For some courses, you may be able to pay in instalments. Please check at the time of booking.

Working Outdoors – An introduction to dry stone walling as a career Monday 7 August 2017 (1 day)

If you have been considering changing career or adding to your existing skills, this taster day will tell you what it is really like to work as a waller. It will introduce you to the training available and give you a hands-on introduction to dry stone walling to see if it might be for you. £30

In addition to dry stone walling courses, Derbyshire Adult Community Education Centres also offer courses on becoming self employed, accounting, IT and web skills and improving maths and English skills. Please ask for details.

A short, non-qualification course for experienced wallers looking to develop their knowledge and skills in building curves and corners in dry stone walls £82 / £75 / £46 ………………………………………….

Level 1 Certificate in Dry Stone Walling Courses start Monday 14 August 2017 or March 2018 (10 days over 4 months)

Gain the basic knowledge and skills to repair dry stone walls to a satisfactory standard. This course focuses on grading stone, setting profiles, preparing and laying foundations, building lifts, placing of throughbands, coping and finishing. Some previous experience is necessary. Beginners’ courses are offered at the National Stone Centre and by the Derbyshire branch of the Dry Stone Walling Association. The course takes 10 days of training (including the exam), offered in two day blocks. These blocks are approximately a month apart, to allow for practice time between training sessions. Level 2 Certificate in Dry Stone Walling Course starts February 2018 (14 days over 5 months)

Develop skills learnt on Level 1 and be able to build a wall end. It is recommended that learners hold the Level 1 qualification and have very good general experience of walling. The course takes 14 days of training (including the exam), offered in two day blocks. These blocks are approximately a month apart, to allow for practice time between training sessions. Level 3 Certificate in Dry Stone Walling For very experienced working wallers who hold a Level 2 qualification and have considerable recent experience of walling in a variety of settings. The course has two sections: Part A – Building features such as curves, high walls, lunkies or waterpens or walls on sloping ground.  Part B – Building retaining walls. The qualification normally takes a year to complete; building exam pieces for Part A in the Autumn or winter and the Part B timed test the following spring or summer. We are hoping to start a Level 3 course in 2018/19 – please contact us to register your interest.
