The Northern Land Council (NLC) is an independent statutory authority of the Commonwealth responsible for assisting Aboriginal peoples in the Top End of the Northern Territory to acquire and manage their traditional lands and seas. The NLC’s legal team provides legal advice in relation to the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth) (ALRA), the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) (Native Title Act) and other legislation and law affecting relevant Aboriginal peoples and groups in the NLC’s jurisdiction. We are seeking two full-time graduates or junior solicitors to add to our vibrant team which currently consists of the Principal Legal Officer, two Legal Practice Managers (one for each of ALRA and Native Title) and seven solicitors. The successful applicants will work with experienced solicitors on land claims under the ALRA and native title claims under the Native Title Act. They must be able to work independently and in a group environment and be prepared to frequently travel to remote areas of the Top End. Applicants must be motivated, have good communication, interpersonal and drafting skills and be able to learn and adapt quickly. DUTIES  Prepare legal documents and supporting materials for land claims under the ALRA and native title claims under the Native Title Act.  Conduct legal research projects of considerable breadth, complexity or significance.  Engage in consultations with and take instructions from, traditional Aboriginal landowners and native title holders. ESSENTIAL CRITERIA 1. A university degree in Law. 2. Qualified legal practitioner admitted or capable of admission to practice in the Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia. 3. Highly developed oral, interpersonal, written and legal research skills. 4. Proven ability to work as part of a team of professionals. 5. Possession of a “C” Class licence. DESIREABLE 1. Knowledge of ALRA, the Native Title Act and other relevant legislation affecting the interests of NLC and its constituents. 2. Knowledge of Aboriginal culture and society and the issues affecting Aboriginal people in the NT and an ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people.
