Inauguration of the ministry of the twelfth Bishop of Newcastle Bishop Christine’s public ministry as Bishop of Newcastle will begin at a Service of Inauguration in St Nicholas’ Cathedral at 11.00am on Saturday 12th December, at which we will celebrate her response to God’s call and affirm our prayerful support for her work. The service will include her formal Installation and Enthronement. All licensed ministers have been invited to the Cathedral and there are tickets for two lay representatives from every parish in the diocese. These will be sent out to parishes during November. Please travel by public transport if possible to relieve pressure on city-centre parking. More details will be posted as they become available at www.newcastle.anglican.org/newbishop.

Prayer for the Diocese and for Bishop Christine Bishop Frank has invited parishes, deaneries, Advent Groups, Chaplaincies and other gatherings where we meet for worship, prayer and service in the diocese to arrange local events for prayer between December 1st and December 11th this year. It will be good to meet to pray for our new Diocesan Bishop, Christine Hardman, to remember her public ministry in the Diocese and region and to ask for God’s blessing in the early weeks after her consecration. Also it will be good to pray for her Inauguration Service on December 12th in the Cathedral. A list of known events can be found on page 3.

Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) Forms PCCs have recently been receiving letters from banks asking them to fill in a form in relation to the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA). These are not straightforward – indeed the legislation is complex, different banks use different forms, and the identification numbers that they seek (tax identification, HRMC charity number, Charity Commission registration number) varies between PCCs. Newcastle Readers' Board in association with The Bible Reading Fellowship (BRF)'s initiative, 'The Gift of Years- resourcing the spiritual journey of older people’

Anna Chaplaincy Information Day Thursday 10 March 2016 Church of the Holy Nativity, Hillhead Parkway, Chapel House, Newcastle NE5 1DR Changing demographics mean a ripe mission field is emerging among the growing proportion of women and men living in to their 80s, 90s and beyond. This information day unpacks the practical Anna Chaplaincy approach to supporting older people, those who are lonely and isolated. It opens eyes to the possibilities of forging partnerships within communities, inspiring and equipping volunteers, creating ‘church’ where people are – whether they live alone, in sheltered homes, care homes or retirement complexes. This is a day to help clergy, Readers, laity and others see valuing age as a desirable necessity, and to give them tools to respond to the unprecedented changes we are witnessing around us, including the rising numbers of people living with dementia. Speakers: Debbie Thrower and Alex Burn If you would like to attend this event please reply to Lynne Craggs: [email protected] no later than 15th December. Please state any special dietary requirements. We anticipate a positive response to invitations; an early booking is recommended.

Coming up at Shepherds Dene CHANGING GEAR —John Bell retreat Weds 13th - Fri 15th April 2016. Price £235. In the traditional denominations of the western church the word 'change' both unites and polarises. There is agreement that things should change, but which things – music, liturgy, buildings, organisational structures? Yet, at the centre of the Christian faith is a God who changes (or does he?), a Saviour who is resurrected, and a Spirit intended to make all things new. Rather than become embroiled in the detail of which colour to paint the ladies' toilet, in this retreat we will look at the anatomy of change and of resistance, identifying ways in which we can understand and enable change to happen.

Epiphany Quiet Day – the Revd Audrey McCartan Wednesday 6th January, 9.30am-4.00pm. Price £20.

Clergy Reading Week Monday 1st February – Friday 5th February

John Bell, member of the Wild Goose Resource Team, works all over the world. Here he will draw on examples of good and bad practice in the many churches in which he has worked as a consultant or retreat leader.

Subsidised by Shepherds Dene; price £175.

Pilgrimage to Iona Richard and Maggi Deimel, the Diocesan Advisers on New Spiritual Movements, will be leading a pilgrimage to Iona from 3rd to 7th May 2016. The full board cost will be £280, staying in Bishop's House, Iona. Pilgrims would need to arrange their travel, but full advice would be given. The theme of the retreat will be rekindling in us the light of Christ in creation, which flowed from Iona to Northumbria in the brief but blessed time of Celtic Christianity. London has a lot, but it doesn't have it all... From 29 October-7 February the British Library are holding an exhibition, Egypt after the Pharaohs, with the Codex Sinaiticus on display. We think this will be marvellous but you don't have to go all that way to view this amazing book! The Religious Resources Centre has a facsimile of the Codex which is currently on display in Church House. So, to view the NE's very own Codex and experience a warm welcome from our staff members please visit Church House between the 20th October and 18th December. If you’d like to hear more about the Codex, on the 30th November 12:30 – 2:00, the Revd David Bryan will be giving a talk on his passion for the Codex and the significance it has for understanding Christian Scriptures (you don't need to book for this, but if you are planning on coming, do let us know via [email protected] or 0191 375 0586). Don’t worry if you can’t make it to Church House – the Codex will be on display in Cuthbert House 25th January 5th February 2016 and the exhibition notes are available to download here.

The RRC is currently Thinking About Light... Light features in Christianity for many different purposes. It shows the sign of God's presence, such as when he appeared to Moses (Exodus 3:2), and also his power: I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things. (Isaiah 45:7) Light is also used as a sign of Jesus: 'I am the light of the world. He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life'(John 8:12) Light features during the baptism ceremony, symbolising the fact that, as baptised Christians they now walk in the light of Jesus for the rest of their lives and are asked to spread that Light, so others can move from darkness to the light. Can you think of any other reasons light is used in Christian art? Pictured: Sacred Mirrors: Christ by Alex Grey. The work of Mary’s Meals is beautifully simple. We provide a nutritious daily meal for impoverished children in school. This meal attracts chronically hungry children into the classroom where they receive an education that can offer them a route out of poverty. It costs just £12.20 to give a child the gift of a daily meal for a whole school year. In addition, Mary’s Meals is committed to spending at least 93p of every £1 directly on our charitable activities. There’s never been a better time to support our work, every pound we raise this Christmas will be doubled by the UK Government. 'New Churches in the North East' report available now A new research report, 'New Churches in the North East', has been published and is available to download now. Go to download page It can also be obtained as a hard copy for £5 by contacting Val Strickland on [email protected]. The report was funded by a Leech Fellowship and offers a survey of new churches founded in the North East since 1980. Using a strict definition of what counts as a 'new church', it concludes that 125 new churches have started in the North East since 1980, with a combined usual Sunday attendance of c.12,000. The report finds that ethnic minority churchgoing is a key factor in the growth of such congregations. The findings are of interest to those involved in various academic fields, all those involved in church leadership in the North East and those concerned to chart how society in the North East is changing. The report was produced by a team of researchers based at the Centre for Church Growth Research, based at Cranmer Hall. The research raises lots of questions and if people would like to discuss the research, they are welcome to contact the Revd Dr David Goodhew, Director of Ministerial Practice at Cranmer Hall, Durham direct on [email protected]. community.dur.ac.uk/churchgrowth.research
