Maundy Thursday Cathedral Service – 11.00am 24th March Together with Bishop Frank, I warmly invite the Clergy, Readers and the people of the Diocese to the Cathedral for the Maundy Thursday Eucharist Service. The service provides an opportunity for us all, lay and ordained, to renew our commitment to the service of Christ and his people. Also included will be the Blessing of the Oils, for use in Holy Baptism, Confirmation and the Anointing of the Sick. The Cathedral will provide the oils. Empty stocks and vessels should be brought to the Cathedral before 10.30am on Maundy Thursday, and collected at the end of the service. Further stocks of all oils can be obtained from Bishop’s House after Easter.

Good Friday Offering 2016 Good Friday/Easter Offering 

Start of Lent - February 10th, 2016

Good Friday - March 25th, 2016

Easter Sunday - March 27th 2016

Since 1922, Anglican/Episcopal church congregations have supported the ministries of the Middle East Church through the Good Friday Offering. This year the situation of Christians and Churches across the Middle East has become significantly more complex and difficult in many countries.

www.jmeca.org.uk

Support for their presence and witness is vital. Good Friday collections will help fund the ministries of the dioceses in the region such as hospitals, schools and other social welfare programmes that serve local communities of all faiths. Along with your prayers please support the long-standing tradition of allocating the Good Friday Offering, or other Easter Offering, to support the work of the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East. I come again, this year, to appeal for your generous support and prayer for the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East. The area includes Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. In the midst of all the turmoil around it, the Church remains a beacon of hope. The Church has suffered much and needs all our support. I am pleased to note that last year, the Good Friday Offering sent to the Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East via JMECA came to £4,819.33. May the Lord continue to bless and keep you. + Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury (2016) JMECA invites parishes to dedicate their Good Friday or Easter collections to support the work of the Anglican Church in the Middle East and to join together in prayer this Easter on issues of concern within the region:

supporting the presence and role of Christians

movements for peace and reconciliation

the development of just government

meeting the needs of the poor and disadvantaged

resolution of the Israel/Palestine conflict

How to send your Good Friday Offering For many years JMECA has received the Good Friday collections from various UK parishes and passed them on to the dioceses in the Middle East. To send your Good Friday Offering to the Anglican/Episcopal Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East via JMECA, please send a cheque for the amount collected, made out to: The Jerusalem and Middle East Church Association and post it to The Secretary, at: JMECA, 1 Hart House, The Hart, Farnham, Surrey. GU9 7HJ Please indicate in your covering note that this represents your Good Friday Offering. www.jmeca.org.uk

Closing date for applications is 31st March 2016. It is anticipated that interviews will be held after that date with appointment as soon as is practical. Job Vacancy Holy Saviour, Tynemouth is looking to appoint a

Musical Director Holy Saviour, Tynemouth (HST) is already a fairly large church but has a vision to grow much larger! As part of our strategy for growth we are looking to broaden its musical range as we build on our strong musical foundations. We are looking for an excellent keyboard player who can also galvanise, lead and develop a worship band to enhance our worship. Ideally the director would also be competent at playing the organ or willing to undertake a conversion course to develop this skill for worship, weddings and funerals. We envisage a mixed economy of band and organ, traditional and modern. We already have a core of mixed ability musicians who play at occasional services and we want to see that being developed into a much fuller role. This post has a salary of £4,000 per annum plus direct payments for weddings and funerals. For a job description and application form please contact: Elizabeth Brown Parish Administrator The Church of the Holy Saviour, Tynemouth Priory Tynemouth NE30 2LD [email protected] 0191 257 0660 www.holysaviours.org.uk For vacancies in the Diocese of Newcastle follow #nclcofejobs on Twitter or Facebook www.newcastle.anglican.org

From Archdeacon Geoff Miller:

Health and Safety and the use of equipment One of our clergy helpfully brought to my attention a recent judgment reported by the Health and Safety Executive concerning a housing trust who were taken to court by an employee following an incident which resulted in severe injuries to his hand when using a ride-on mower. The concern raised was whether we have appropriate practices in place in

churches where people use any kind of potentially dangerous equipment. I have taken some advice from EIG (Ecclesiastical Insurance Group), who tell us that such activities with equipment of this kind (indeed, any kind of cutting equipment) fall under Health and Safety Act guidance, and that PCCs should undertake regular risk assessments to ensure that the equipment is well maintained and that the person using it is ‘able and competent’. They offer clear advice on undertaking a risk assessment on their website and recommend that a

simple record is made when the risk assessment is undertaken. Of course, they were also keen to remind us that, providing a proper insurance policy is in place, the PCC should also be covered for any claim made against it. Do get in touch with EIG direct or with myself if I can help you in any way with these matters.

GRASPING THE GOSPELS! 

'The walking on the water' is a most remarkable story; which Gospel does NOT tell it?

The parable of the Sower is one of Jesus' best-known parables: which Gospel does NOT tell it, and why?

The parable of the Sower is told in three Gospels, but each telling ends differently from the others: what are the three endings, and in which Gospel will we find each of them?

Many of Plato's great works were cast in the shape of a conversation. This useless bit of information is actually helpful background knowledge for which Gospel?

The Revd Richard Ferguson (pictured) is running a four-week course for all comers on Thursday mornings in Lent 2016 (February 11th, 18th and 25th, March 3rd) from 10.30am to 12.00 noon in Stannington Village Hall (good car park, next door to an excellent pub). Get the Gospels at your fingertips so that you know why we have four Gospels, not one, why they are different, and how to read each Gospel to get the most out of it. Note the dates now; more information in February's Link or from Richard on 01670 789795.

In the traditional denominations of the western church the word 'change' both unites and polarises. There is agreement that Saturday 27th February , 9.30am - 4pm things should change, but which things – inspired by the exhibition ‘Stilled Lives’ A choice of workshops with one of four participating artists: Cathy music, liturgy, buildings, organisational structures? Yet, at the centre of the Christian Duncan (linocuts), Jenny Mathers (acrylic and watercolour faith is a God who changes (or does he?), a painting), Jacqueline Quinn (turning colourful papers into folded Saviour who is resurrected, and a Spirit books and maps) and Teresa Toms (drawing in pencil and intended to make all things new. graphite). Cost £40.00 Rather than become embroiled in the detail of which colour to paint the ladies' toilet, in this retreat we will look at the anatomy of change and of resistance, identifying ways in which we can understand and enable change to happen. The Anglican Centre in Rome promoting Christian unity in a divided world or working together for God’s Kingdom of righteousness and justice OUR MISSION The Anglican Centre in Rome promotes Christian unity in a divided world It is a permanent Anglican Communion presence in Rome Its Director is the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Representative to the Holy See It exercises a ministry of hospitality and prayer, and provides educational opportunities and resources

Fifty years ago, on Tuesday in Holy Week, March 22nd 1966 Michael Ramsey, the Archbishop of Canterbury, dedicated the Anglican Centre in Rome. Two days later, on Maundy Thursday, the Archbishop met with Pope Paul VI. They issued a Common Declaration which gave thanks that the Holy Spirit had made a new atmosphere of Christian fellowship possible between the Roman Catholic Church and the Christians of the Anglican Communion. As a result of the meeting, the Anglican Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) was set up to engage in a serious dialogue which might lead to that ‘unity in truth for which Christ prayed.’ Services to commemorate these events are to be: Wednesday in Holy Week – St Andrew by the Wardrobe in London; 12.30pm, Holy Communion June 4, 2016 – Westminster Abbey; 5.00pm, Choral Evensong. Local events, which will include a pilgrimage to Holy Island, are to be announced. Details from [email protected] www.anglicancentreinrome.org campaigning and share their tips for what makes decision makers sit up and listen.

Resources The Book of Uncommon Prayer – Annie Heppenstall (PM & D, 243) This offers a huge collection of prayers inspired by the Christian liturgical tradition: prayers specific to times and seasons, and liturgies celebrating or inspired by the feminine divine, nature, humanity and mystery and mysticism – along with in depth background and guidance. A great resource for those planning collective prayer-based activities, preparing intercessions for use in worship, or who simply want to think in a bit more depth about what prayer is and what the language we use for prayer communicates to God and to others.

The RRC is currently Thinking About Prayer... How to Pray – John Pritchard (PM, 243.1) This book provides suggestions to help us figure out how & where to pray and is split into five parts: Watch this Space, Day by Day, Good Practice, Praying with All We’ve Got and Darkness and Light. Each introduces the concept and provides exercises and questions for reflection along with a relevant quote or story and closes with a prayer focusing on the theme of the chapter. This is an accessible guide for both those just getting started with prayer and those who want to enrich their prayer lives

Churches lead the switch to green energy Ash Wednesday saw churches across the country and from many denominations come together to start acting against climate change, made possible by the launch of the ‘Big Church Switch’ campaign. The Church of England’s buying service, Parish Buying, has teamed up with Christian Aid and Tearfund to run this campaign aimed at practically demonstrating the Church’s commitment to lead the way in tackling climate change. Bishop Nicholas Holtam, who leads on environmental issues for the Church of England, has said, “The Big Church Switch is a simple, practical, good idea. It supports the move to renewable energy. If Lent is about renewing our lives in response to the love of God here is a way to follow. You can do it, and so will I.” You can get more information, and register your interest, on the Big Church Switch website.

www.bigchurchswitch.org.uk Who are Parish Buying? Parish Buying is a service set up and run by the Church of England to assist parishes in their buying - saving time and money to release back into mission and ministry. From the Revd Canon Ian Flintoft, Bishop’s Chaplain:

The Queen’s 90th Birthday The Church Buildings Council, with the approval and agreement of the Archbishops, is encouraging parish churches to organise a festival on the weekend of 10-12 June 2016, to celebrate The Queen’s 90th birthday and her role as Supreme Governor of the Church of England. This will coincide with official celebrations taking place in London. The Council notes that ‘the variety of potential forms for the celebrations is huge, from flower to organ, bell-ringing or choir festivals, from food to beer festivals.’ Parishes might like to organise an event which will contribute to their Mission Action Plan. Further details can be found here: www.churchcare.co.uk/about-us/campaigns/news/943-queen-s-90th-birthday The Liturgical Commission has written two collects, which have been personally approved by Her Majesty The Queen for use at services celebrating her ninetieth birthday later this year. Two graces for use at church and community gatherings have also been produced. The texts can be found here: www.churchofengland.org/media-centre/news/2016/02/prayers-for-hm-the -queen%E2%80%99s-90th-birthday-published.aspx Churches are being encouraged to share their plans to mark Her Majesty's birthday through the Church Care website, which also offers tips and advice on planning events and services and will promote initiatives on a dedicated celebration map and on Twitter through @CofE_ChurchCare using #HMQ90. www.newcastle.anglican.org
