Dear Friend,

Nepal hit by two earthquakes Another powerful earthquake has struck Nepal, less than three weeks after a devastating quake killed more than 8,000 people and forced some 3 million from their homes. As our local partners continue to deliver desperately needed relief to communities affected by the first earthquake, the race is on to get supplies to areas worst hit by this second earthquake. Shocked, tired and hungry, the survivors of both deadly earthquakes urgently need clean water, food, shelter and medical care. PLEASE DONATE NOW, so we can provide emergency support to those affected by the earthquakes. With thanks,

Great North Festival is a charity committed to celebrating the pioneering achievements of the North East and reviving the creative and innovative spirit of the region.

Frances Ashton Charity Help for serving and retired Church of England clergy and widow(er)s of clergy now deceased. Since 1747 Frances Ashton’s Charity has been helping those who spend their lives serving God and their parish. The Frances Ashton Charity will consider a modest grant for almost any purpose which is causing financial hardship. For example, we could help with: • The cost of a new pair of glasses

It is concerned to work with others to awaken the spiritual and moral wellsprings of our regional life, especially for the benefit of the young.

• A respite care break for a disabled family dependent • The cost of a family holiday • The cost of repairing a broken boiler

We are a group of five; Bob Langley, the former Archdeacon of Lindisfarne, Paul Southgate, the Director of the Vincentians in Partnership, Gordon Morris, a freelance journalist, Liz Robson, a Researcher with Newcastle University, and David Goodacre, a retired priest in the Diocese of Newcastle.

Particular priorities for support include unforeseeable emergencies, medical or care needs for the applicant or their dependents. In some cases, the trustees may be able to help at any point during the year. There are a few exceptions where the Charity is unable to help, for example private education.

GNF ran a series of events in 2013, described on our website: www.greatnorthfestival.com We now publish a quarterly newsletter to spread our ideas – free to subscribers, who subscribe on line – or by writing to [email protected].

For an application form and guidance please contact the Trust Administrator.

Could you be a Marie Curie Helper volunteer? Marie Curie Cancer Care is rolling out its Helper Service for Tyne and Wear based in the Marie Curie hospice. The remit of the Helper Service is to match trained Helper volunteers to support terminally ill people, their families and carers when they need it most. This could be by being a listening ear, helping them get to an appointment, offering a sitting service or engaging them in joint areas of interest. Marie Curie Helper volunteers offer valuable emotional and practical support to help people affected by a terminal illness get the most from the time they have left. We know little things can make such a big difference for those living with a terminal illness. All volunteers will undergo training before they start as well as on-going support throughout their time volunteering. If you’re interested, contact: Phone: 0845

Riding Lights presents BAKED ALASKA Touring autumn 2015

Free to a good home From St Paul’s, Seaton Sluice. Maniples: Those with elastic attached were/ are worn around the wrist.

Riding Lights Theatre Company is looking for cathedrals, churches and other venues to host their new show for autumn, BAKED ALASKA.

Collar attachments: The oblong items have press studs on the reverse and were/are used to attach to the collar - we no longer have garments with such matching studs to which these could be attached.

Touring to churches across the UK from September 17th to November 14th, BAKED ALASKA brings stories of the wild and unpredictable effects of climate change from the four corners of the earth. We are all in this together - parents, children, scientists, oil magnates, farmers, politicians, journalists - everyone - all hoping that the 2015 United Nations Conference on Climate Change will serve up a recipe for hope and improvement.

Lectern Covers: The two larger items - purple and green, beside the Maniples, used to fit around our lecturn; however, we now have a permanent microphone fitted and the cover no longer fits.

The show is presented by a solidarity of organisations, including Christian Aid, Operation Noah and the Diocese of Lichfield, committed to raising a Christian voice in the call to worldwide action. Love for God the Creator and all he has made for us to enjoy, goes hand in hand with love for our neighbours everywhere on this beautiful planet. In the high-energy, 'seriously funny' and thought provoking style for which Riding Lights is well known, BAKED ALASKA is something we can all look forward to - unless we do something about it.

Burse and Veil x 3 purple, green and gold. One green spare burse. Collection pouches (one with part missing handle - poor condition) + one inner for collection plate.

If you know of a church that might be interested in hosting this inspiring piece of theatre then please contact Caitlin at Riding Lights Theatre Company on 01904 655317 or email [email protected].

In the North East from Monday 2nd November - Tuesday 10th November with some flexibility. www.newcastle.anglican.org

CALLING FOR OLD CANDLES Cherishing Churchyards Week:

Why not take part? Why not celebrate the beauty of your churchyard or burial site with your local community during National Cherishing Churchyard Week from Saturday 6th June - Sunday 14th June 2015? Caring for God’s Acre, the charity dedicated to the conservation of burial sites of all kinds is promoting National Cherishing Churchyards Week and helping people to organise events which celebrate these special places in the heart of our communities. A rich diversity of plant and animal life can be discovered in burial sites and they often contain distinctive and veteran trees such as Yew trees, the oldest living things in Britain. The stonework of the memorials and boundary walls provides a home for a mosaic of mosses, ferns and lichens. Burial sites are also important places for archaeology and history, providing an accessible resource for community learning. Most important of all - they provide a tranquil place for remembrance and quiet reflection.

Candles4Charity was established in 1994 as a means of generating income to support local, national and international charities. It started life in Bridge of Allan in Scotland, then moved to Spittal (Berwick upon Tweed) and in 2010 arrived in Haydon Bridge. Candles are made entirely from wax from the remains of old candles which is cleaned then made into candles in a variety of shapes and colours. It is not a commercial enterprise but more of a hobby which now raises over £800 per year and has raised £8000+ since 1994.

Events offered during Cherishing Churchyards Week could include activities for families such as a quiz, a mini beast safari, tree bingo, letter or leaf rubbing, making gargoyles out of clay. Open days could be held with guided tours. Volunteer activity days such as making compost areas, scything grass, memorial recording, bramble clearing, nest box making. Special workshops could be organised in dry stone walling, memorial safety and care, plant identification, geology, tree care or creative writing and art. Caring for God’s Acre’s website at www.caringforgodsacre.org.uk has a wealth of information to support Cherishing Churchyards Week. Visit Conservation Advice/Advice Sheets for Download section on the website for information on activities for young people, how to attract volunteers, health and safety and the special Cherishing Churchyards Logo.

I am now very short of WHITE wax (any shade of white) so if you can help, there is a collecting point at East Cottage, Plunderheath, Haydon Bridge NE47 6JU.

‘There’s no better way of involving people, young and old, than through events with a difference such as those you an put on during this special week,’ said Andrea Gilpin, Cherishing Churchyards Week Coordinator.

The black collecting bin, clearly marked WAX, is located inside the upper gate to the cottage. Alternatively you can leave wax at The General Havelock Inn in Ratcliffe Road in Haydon Bridge (just off the A69).

 Cherishing Churchyards Week is supported by CfGA’s Heritage Lottery (HLF) funded National Project, which is working its way across England and Wales running conferences and training events in fifteen different regions.

 For further information on Cherishing Churchyards Week or the work of the charity, Caring for God’s Acre, take a look at www.caringforgodsacre.org.uk.

Sacred Water: Connecting with God through water A Conversation@theRRC with the Revd Emma Duff Early Christians seemed to know that immersion in natural bodies of water has a mysterious power to connect us with the divine. In this country, the practice of bathing in holy wells mostly came to an end after the Reformation, when many holy wells were capped and their shrines destroyed. In recent years there has been an upsurge of interest in Wild Swimming (in a natural body of water). In addition to other health benefits, swimming in cold water releases endorphins, leading to increased feelings of well-being. Anecdotally, many swimmers report a “spiritual” aspect to their practice. Is this a practice the Church should be reclaiming? When: Tuesday 9th June 2015, 6.00-7.30pm Where: Church House, St John’s Terrace, North Shields, NE29 6HS Attending Conversations@theRRC is FREE for Religious Resources Centre members. Non-members will be charged £5 per session. Places and parking are restricted and must be reserved prior to the event. To make a reservation please contact the RRC on 0191 375 0586 or via [email protected].

Annual Sponsored Steeplechase (part of the national ‘Ride & Stride’)

The Steeplechase has been held every year since 1980, and has been the largest single contributor to the Trust's funds. Most other county trusts hold similar events, previously called The Bike Ride or similar, but now all are part of the national event called Ride and Stride. For more details of the national event click here. The main aim of the Steeplechase is to visit as many churches as reasonably possible in the day, with participants being sponsored for the number of churches they visit. Other ways of raising money are also acceptable, such as a church being sponsored for the number of visits it receives; or sponsoring younger children for circuits of the church yard. The income from the Steeplechase is shared between the Trust, and individual churches and chapels nominated by the participating Steeplechasers. In 2014 the event raised a total of nearly £8,000, an invaluable contribution to the upkeep of our historic churches. The 2015 Steeplechase will be held on Saturday 12 September. Many of the region's churches and chapels are fascinating and interesting places to visit: in the North East we are blessed with a particularly long and rich Christian heritage. So please come and join the 2015 Steeplechase: as you can see from the photograph the event is open to all age groups and you can use any means of transport - all we ask is that you take care. All the documentation you will need to take part can be downloaded here.

northumbriahct.org.uk As Archdeacons we get to visit many churches and the annual NHCT Steeplechase is a great opportunity for lots of people to share that privilege and pleasure. It's good to have a purpose for your walk or bike ride; this way you can get into great company too, and support the work of the local churches you visit as well as the conservation work of the Trust. Why not get out there in God's good air and discover - or rediscover - some of the places where his people meet to praise him and pray for his world? GEORDIE HEROES TOP HOLY ISLAND FESTIVAL The Lindisfarne Story is running for home! The show – performed by the band’s founding drummer Ray Laidlaw and guitarist Billy Mitchell – is topping the bill at the first-ever Holy Island Festival from June 25-28. Although the Tyneside Seventies’ band took their name from the historic island off the Northumberland coast, the band never played there professionally. Now 45 years on, Ray and Billy will be performing their hit UK touring show – which charts the history of the group in music and words – at St Mary’s Church on Sunday 28 June.
