Job Vacancy The Farne Churches Youth and Family Outreach ( FCYAFO) seeks to appoint a

Youth Worker An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and dedicated Christian to work with this newly established charity on a beautiful part of the Northumberland coast. The Charity seeks to appoint a youth and family worker to support all the churches in the area in their work with children, young people, and families. This area has a deep Christian history. The job covers the area from Craster to Belford (including Seahouses). It is an area of small rural and seaside churches. Means of transport essential. The successful candidate will lead and pioneer work among children and families in this ecumenical project. The Charity is an Associate Body, working with Scripture Union. The person appointed will be a ‘self starter’ who is able to develop new initiatives working with local churches, schools and groups. Salary will be between £19,000 and £21,000 p.a. depending on qualification and experience. The post is initially for two years, but it is hoped to extend it beyond that. Closing date for applications is 31st March 2016. It is anticipated that interviews will be held after that date with appointment as soon as is practical. This role has an occupational requirement to be filled by a committed Christian. Equality Act 2010, Part 1, Schedule 9 applies. For further information, and to apply, contact: George Scott: [email protected] or 01665 720466or John Holwell [email protected] or 07984 355363

Local Ministry Development Network Mailing Download the latest mailing from Local Ministry Development Officer the Revd Rachel Wood. www.newcastle.anglican.org/lmdmailings From Archdeacon Geoff Miller:

Health and Safety and the use of equipment One of our clergy helpfully brought to my attention a recent judgment reported by the Health and Safety Executive concerning a housing trust who were taken to court by an employee following an incident which resulted in severe injuries to his hand when using a ride-on mower. The concern raised was whether we have appropriate practices in place in

churches where people use any kind of potentially dangerous equipment. I have taken some advice from EIG (Ecclesiastical Insurance Group), who tell us that such activities with equipment of this kind (indeed, any kind of cutting equipment) fall under Health and Safety Act guidance, and that PCCs should undertake regular risk assessments to ensure that the equipment is well maintained and that the person using it is ‘able and competent’. They offer clear advice on undertaking a risk assessment on their website and recommend that a

simple record is made when the risk assessment is undertaken. Of course, they were also keen to remind us that, providing a proper insurance policy is in place, the PCC should also be covered for any claim made against it. Do get in touch with EIG direct or with myself if I can help you in any way with these matters.

GRASPING THE GOSPELS! 

'The walking on the water' is a most remarkable story; which Gospel does NOT tell it?

The parable of the Sower is one of Jesus' best-known parables: which Gospel does NOT tell it, and why?

The parable of the Sower is told in three Gospels, but each telling ends differently from the others: what are the three endings, and in which Gospel will we find each of them?

Many of Plato's great works were cast in the shape of a conversation. This useless bit of information is actually helpful background knowledge for which Gospel?

The Revd Richard Ferguson (pictured) is running a four-week course for all comers on Thursday mornings in Lent 2016 (February 11th, 18th and 25th, March 3rd) from 10.30am to 12.00 noon in Stannington Village Hall (good car park, next door to an excellent pub). Get the Gospels at your fingertips so that you know why we have four Gospels, not one, why they are different, and how to read each Gospel to get the most out of it. Note the dates now; more information in February's Link or from Richard on 01670 789795.

Sharing God's Blessing - How to Renew the Local Church Five churches in the North East including St Wilfrid's, Newbiggin Hall and St James', Shilbottle - took part in a research project during 2014/2015 to help Robin Greenwood produce a new book, Sharing God's Blessing - How to Renew the Local Church. They helped develop and road test the material which encourages congregations to engage in honest, open conversations with each other, grow in confidence and see themselves as blessed and a sign of hope in their communities. The book will be published by SPCK in January 2016. St Wilfrid's Church will be hosting a book launch on Wednesday February 24th from 7.00pm - 9.15pm, during which Robin and all the churches involved will speak about the book and there will be an opportunity to buy it (£9.99). Refreshments will be served.

This event is open to all - no need to book. For further details, please contact Revd Sarah Miller, Vicar of St Wilfrid's: 0191 2140833 or email [email protected].

Anna Chaplaincy Information Day Thursday 10 March 2016 Church of the Holy Nativity, Hillhead Parkway, Chapel House, Newcastle NE5 1DR Changing demographics mean a ripe mission field is emerging among the growing proportion of women and men living in to their 80s, 90s and beyond. This information day unpacks the practical Anna Chaplaincy approach to supporting older people, those who are lonely and isolated. It opens eyes to the possibilities of forging partnerships within communities, inspiring and equipping volunteers, creating ‘church’ where people are – whether they live alone, in sheltered homes, care homes or retirement complexes. This is a day to help clergy, Readers, laity and others see valuing age as a desirable necessity, and to give them tools to respond to the unprecedented changes we are witnessing around us, including the rising numbers of people living with dementia. Speakers: Debbie Thrower and Alex Burn If you would like to attend this event please reply to Lynne Craggs: [email protected] no later than 15th December. Please state any special dietary requirements. We anticipate a positive response to invitations; an early booking is recommended.

Clergy Reading Week Monday 1st February – Friday 5th February Subsidised by Shepherds Dene; price £175.

Quiet Fridays in Lent at Shepherds Dene A silent day, including morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea

Friday 12th February

This retreat looks at the role religion plays in violent extremism. We will examine Al Qaeda’s links to IS and the so-called Islamic caliphate as well as what response Christian churches could make in countering the risk of young people becoming radicalised. Discussions will be supported by film, news and current research. There will be acts of worship and time for private reflection and prayer. No previous knowledge of terrorism is expected, but sessions will focus on challenging and emotive subjects which should be of real concern to everyone, of all faiths and none.

Friday 19th February

Revd Steve Wilkinson lectures at Masters Level at North East universities on ‘Countering Radicalisation’ and is Team Vicar of Cramlington, St. Nicholas

Changing Gear —John Bell retreat

Friday 4th March

Weds 13th - Fri 15th April 2016. Price £235.

The Revd Canon David Kennedy , Vice Dean of Durham Cathedral

In the traditional denominations of the western church the word 'change' both unites and polarises. There is agreement that things should change, but which things – music, liturgy, buildings, organisational structures? Yet, at the centre of the Christian faith is a God who changes (or does he?), a Saviour who is resurrected, and a Spirit intended to make all things new.

Friday 11th March The Revd Catherine Pickford

Friday 18th March The Venerable Peter Robinson Archdeacon of Lindisfarne Cost £20.00 per day

Three days in the belly of a whale Monday 15th – Friday 19th February 2016 Led by The Right Revd Mark Bryant, Bishop of Jarrow This silent Lent retreat will give us space away from everything to be with God and ask him what following Jesus might mean for us at this moment in our lives. Jonah will help us along the way. Cost £175.00

Rather than become embroiled in the detail of which colour to paint the ladies' toilet, in this retreat we will look at the anatomy of change and of resistance, identifying ways in which we can understand and enable change to happen. John Bell, member of the Wild Goose Resource Team, works all over the world. Here he will draw on examples of good and bad practice in the many churches in which he has worked as a consultant or retreat leader. Cost £245.00

Asbestos Training Saturday 6th February 2016 10.00am-1.00pm Cuthbert House, Durham, DH1 3RY Do you have an asbestos plan for your church and church hall? By law you should — Ecclesiastical Insurance require you to have one. The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 requires a ‘competent person’ to undertake an inspection of the premises and compile a register to note any asbestos present. This is necessary for all buildings for which the PCC is responsible. This person does not need to be an expert, but is someone with the necessary knowledge and training. You do not need a full asbestos survey, unless you are doing significant work with outside contractors in your church or hall. Do you have someone in your church, or group of churches, who has an interest in church buildings and is willing to be trained? This is an unique opportunity. Depending on interest, spaces may be limited so early booking is advised. Please book as soon as possible through the office of the Archdeacon of Auckland. Email: [email protected] Telephone: 01325 480 444 Give your name, church and role, and contact details.

The Anglican Centre in Rome promoting Christian unity in a divided world or working together for God’s Kingdom of righteousness and justice OUR MISSION The Anglican Centre in Rome promotes Christian unity in a divided world It is a permanent Anglican Communion presence in Rome Its Director is the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Representative to the Holy See It exercises a ministry of hospitality and prayer, and provides educational opportunities and resources

Fifty years ago, on Tuesday in Holy Week, March 22nd 1966 Michael Ramsey, the Archbishop of Canterbury, dedicated the Anglican Centre in Rome. Two days later, on Maundy Thursday, the Archbishop met with Pope Paul VI. They issued a Common Declaration which gave thanks that the Holy Spirit had made a new atmosphere of Christian fellowship possible between the Roman Catholic Church and the Christians of the Anglican Communion. As a result of the meeting, the Anglican Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) was set up to engage in a serious dialogue which might lead to that ‘unity in truth for which Christ prayed.’ Services to commemorate these events are to be: Wednesday in Holy Week – St Andrew by the Wardrobe in London; 12.30pm, Holy Communion June 4, 2016 – Westminster Abbey; 5.00pm, Choral Evensong. Local events, which will include a pilgrimage to Holy Island, are to be announced. Details from [email protected] www.anglicancentreinrome.org

Resources The Teenage Prayer Experiment Notebook – Miranda and Noah Threlfall-Holmes (242 PM & D) This is not a book to teach teenagers about prayer but one which encourages teenagers to try out and experience prayer for themselves. It contains sections on many different ways on praying, some active and others reflective – a prayer den, Minecraft church, taste and see and many more. Each prayer idea is introduced and then followed by an experiment to try it out and space for notes to be made on the experiment. Full of ideas on different ways to pray!

The RRC is currently Thinking About Prayer... Lectio Divina: An ancient prayer that is ever new - Mario Masini (243 PM) This tiny book serves as a good introduction to the concept and practice of Lectio Divina - described as "a reading of a passage of Scripture, received as the Word of God which leads, at the prompting of the Spirit, to meditation, prayer and contemplation." Its four short chapters look more closely at what the phrase actually means, the prayer that must accompany the reading, how the reading of the Scripture needs to be carried out, and ends with a gentle encouragement to incorporate the practice into our own devotional life. If the idea of Lectio Divina intrigues you, this is well worth a read. Don’t forget, too, we’re holding a RE-Vitalise session on the topic on 11th February at Church House: www.resourcescentreonline.co.uk/re-vitalise-lectio-divinia (sic!)

From the Revd Canon Ian Flintoft, Bishop’s Chaplain:

The Queen’s 90th Birthday The Church Buildings Council, with the approval and agreement of the Archbishops, is encouraging parish churches to organise a festival on the weekend of 10-12 June 2016, to celebrate The Queen’s 90th birthday and her role as Supreme Governor of the Church of England. This will coincide with official celebrations taking place in London. The Council notes that ‘the variety of potential forms for the celebrations is huge, from flower to organ, bell-ringing or choir festivals, from food to beer festivals.’ Parishes might like to organise an event which will contribute to their Mission Action Plan. 'New Churches in the North East' report available now A new research report, 'New Churches in the North East', has been published and is available to download now. Go to download page It can also be obtained as a hard copy for £5 by contacting Val Strickland on [email protected]. The report was funded by a Leech Fellowship and offers a survey of new churches founded in the North East since 1980. Using a strict definition of what counts as a 'new church', it concludes that 125 new churches have started in the North East since 1980, with a combined usual Sunday attendance of c.12,000. The report finds that ethnic minority churchgoing is a key factor in the growth of such congregations. The findings are of interest to those involved in various academic fields, all those involved in church leadership in the North East and those concerned to chart how society in the North East is changing. The report was produced by a team of researchers based at the Centre for Church Growth Research, based at Cranmer Hall. The research raises lots of questions and if people would like to discuss the research, they are welcome to contact the Revd Dr David Goodhew, Director of Ministerial Practice at Cranmer Hall, Durham direct on [email protected]. community.dur.ac.uk/churchgrowth.research
