Prayer for the Diocese and for Bishop Christine Bishop Frank has invited parishes, deaneries, Advent Groups, Chaplaincies and other gatherings where we meet for worship, prayer and service in the diocese to arrange local events for prayer between December 1st and December 11th this year. It would be good to meet to pray for our new Diocesan Bishop, Christine Hardman, to remember her public ministry in the Diocese and region and to ask for God’s blessing in the early weeks after her consecration. Also it would be good to pray for her Inauguration Service on December 12th in the An e-mail or a phone call to Jackie Thompson Cathedral. ([email protected], 0191 281 The suggestion is that there are locally based and 9517) would make sure the details are known… supported initiatives, maybe of one church or of a but of course the important thing is to pray to the few churches together or as a special focus for a God of all grace who has called us all to His eternal regular Advent gathering. glory in Jesus Christ. Bishop Frank would love to know details of any events that are planned and to come along to any if he can. www.newcastle.anglican.org/newbishop

We need some more clergy willing and able to spend half a day on the Church Weddings stand at the North East Wedding Show at Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17 January 2016. It’s both a step right outside the Church’s comfort zone, and a step straight into a mission field laden with opportunities to reach out, answer questions and put fears to rest.

www.newcastle.anglican.org

Whether you’ve done it before or not, Diocesan Communications Officer Martin Sheppard would love to hear from you for a conversation that might lead to a 4.5 hour morning or afternoon ‘shift’ on the Saturday or Sunday. The stand is run jointly with the Diocese of Durham so it’s also a chance to get to know colleagues from across the water. Contact Martin Sheppard on 0191 270 4139, 07544 803160 or [email protected].

Church Urban Fund National Conference 2015 Thursday 5th November, Manchester 10.00am – 4.00pm

Financial exclusion is one of the most pressing public policy issues of our time. In the UK today there are 1.9 million households without a basic bank account and over seven million people using high -cost credit. The distress caused by financial exclusion has dramatic effects not only on the lives of those directly affected, but also on society as a whole. The Archbishop of Canterbury has spoken passionately about the importance of this issue for our national life. His initiative has sparked widespread interest across the Church of England and other denominations to address the issue of financial exclusion at both a local and a national level. Through this conference we want to bring together church leaders, church members, activists and community -based practitioners to:

Build understanding of financial exclusion – its causes, consequences and solutions

Reflect theologically on what a fairer and more inclusive financial system could look like

Showcase a variety of efforts to build financial inclusion and build the capacity of participants to join in those efforts in their local community

LAUNCH OF RESEARCH REPORT

‘NEW CHURCHES IN THE NORTH EAST’ All are welcome to a presentation on and launch of a new research report, 'New Churches in the North East' on Thursday 29th October, 4.00pm, Tristram Room, St John’s College, Durham. The report was funded by a Leech Fellowship and offers a survey of new churches founded in the North East since 1980. Using a strict definition of what counts as a 'new church', it concludes that 125 new churches have started in the North East since 1980, with a combined usual Sunday attendance of c.12,000. The report finds that ethnic minority churchgoing is a key factor in the growth of such congregations. The findings are of interest to those involved in various academic fields, all those involved in church leadership in the North East and those concerned to chart how society in the North East is changing. Copies of the report will be available at a special discount at the launch and will also be available online from 29th October. To confirm your attendance, please RSVP to Val Strickland at [email protected]. The report was produced by a team of researchers based at the Centre for Church Growth Research, based at Cranmer Hall.

Tools for Church Leaders, 9-13 November 2015 Retreat at Open Gate Holy Island Bookings: [email protected] Monday: What are our key issues? Tuesday: Discernment, Models, Strategy We explore changing frameworks in society and church, ‘The Great Emergence’ and our place in it. Do we see ourselves as managers of decline, agents of transition, catalysts for fresh experiments? We explore models of church, including an Aidan and Hilda model, and our desired outcomes. Wednesday: God encounters: the inner life of the leader We explore inner demons such as addictive, defensive and dominating tendencies, disciplines that help us grow into the stature and suppleness of Christ, sources of nurture, ways of praying, life-giving rhythms, roots and relationships, and decisive encounters with God. Thursday: Tools and a Way of Life We will use the Aidan and Hilda Way of Life as a set of tools to help us develop the seeing eye, fruitful but non-driven ministry, accompanied exploring and values that help us identify priorities. Friday: Review and prayer There will be space to walk and time for one-to-one sessions. ______________________ Many church leaders are stressed by unrealistic expectations put upon them by others or themselves. While others talk of ‘the end of Christendom’ and of ‘The Great Emergence’ some feel bound to keep the existing institution afloat. All leaders need friendship, vision, skills and tools. The Benedictine Rule has been used as a tool kit to help leaders create islands of stability in a sea of change. We will use the Aidan and Hilda Way of Life as a tool kit that equips us to navigate the seas of change: godly learning, the trail of the full human being, how to say no and win friends. Within the rhythms of nature and optional church and chapel services we will explore the question: Is there an Aidan and Hilda DNA for churches? We will connect the personal quest to live in the heart of Christ with the quest for the church to become Christ’s heart for the community it serves. Ray Simpson has ministered in both traditional and pioneer churches in rural, urban and multi-racial areas. He was commissioned by six church streams to plant ‘one family of Christians in one neighbourhood’ at Bowthorpe, Norwich. He is the Founding Guardian of the international Community of Aidan and Hilda and lives near the Community’s Retreat Centre and Study Library on Holy Island, where church leaders of diverse background come to consult. He is the author of over thirty books including Church of the Isles: the emerging church in Britain and Ireland – a prophetic strategy for renewal; the Cowshed Revolution; High Street Monasteries and New Celtic Monasticism for Everyday People (A Pilgrim Way).

Resources Lighten our Path: An Advent Study Book – Nick Fawcett (263.21 PM and D) One symbol dominates Advent and Christmas, this book says: light. It contains six sessions, each looking at a different ‘light’, including new beginnings, God’s unseen presence in times of trouble and His glory. Each session begins with the words of a well-known Christmas carol, introducing the theme to be discussed, prayers, intercessions, and a meditation that draws the threads of the discussion together. Also contains ice-breakers and group activities.

The RRC is currently Thinking About Light... Welcoming the Light: Services for Advent to Candlemas – David Adam (263.21 PM) 'It is better to light a candle than to complain about the darkness.' Advent and Christmas are about the light of Christ coming into our lives, to conquer the darkness for each of us, and for the world. Each service in this book, from Advent to Candlemas, has built into it a candle lighting, to mark Christ as the Light of the World and also to observe that we take this light into our own hands and hearts as we turn towards him. This book is also suitable for individual worship, lighting a candle to welcome the new day and to commit our lives to God.
