From the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury Please DOWNLOAD HERE and save an electronic 'Second Supplement' to the Faculty Office's publication ‘Anglican Marriage in England and Wales: a Guide to the Law for the Clergy’. A hard-copy of the Second Supplement will be included with new copies of the booklet purchased from the Faculty Office. The Supplement is intended to be read alongside the 3rd edition of the Faculty Office marriage guide booklet and the July 2013 First Supplement. It provides an important update to those areas where there have been changes in the law since July 2013, especially on the topic of marriages of non-European nationals in the Church of England. The 3rd edition of the booklet was published in 2010 and posted to all parish clergy at the time (based on information provided by the diocesan offices). Subsequent individual copies of the booklet can be obtained by contacting the Faculty Office, at a cost of £7.50 (cheques should be made payable to "The Faculty Office"). The First and Second Supplements can be downloaded from the Faculty Office website: www.facultyoffice.org.uk Diocesan Initial Ministerial Education Officers are encouraged to consider placing bulk-orders (of 10 or more) of the booklet, which will be made available at a discount rate of £6.00 per copy. Please contact the Faculty Office with any questions, or to purchase copies of the booklet, at: Post: 1 THE SANCTUARY, WESTMINSTER, LONDON, SW1P 3JT Email: [email protected] Tel: 020 7222 5381 Ext.7162 [For telephone enquirers, or callers in person, the office hours are: 10am – 4pm Monday – Friday] The General Register Office has issued the 6th edition of its Clergy newsletter, together with an updated ' Guidebook for The Clergy', both of which are recommended reading. To all Readers:

 An enthusiasm for singing  To be likely to be available for 2-3 rehearsals in September

Please click here to download a poster with details of an exciting new opportunity.

 To be available to attend the Annual Licensing in St Nicholas’ Cathedral, Newcastle, on the afternoon of 3rd October.

For some years we have been blessed to have our Annual Licensing Service supported by an excellent choir, who have really added to the occasion. However, that choir has run its course and we’d like to explore the possibility of creating a Readers choir for the event – either a choir of all Readers or including Readers and other singers in support.

If you think this might be for you, or if you have any questions about the project, please let me know by 14th July, so we can assess how viable the idea is. With every good wish,

We’re delighted that Philip Sanderson has agreed to conduct such a choir for us, and we now need to find out how many Readers would be interested in taking part. The choir will sing about 3 special anthems during the service, as well as leading the hymn singing.

Could you be a Marie Curie Helper volunteer? Marie Curie Cancer Care is rolling out its Helper Service for Tyne and Wear based in the Marie Curie hospice. The remit of the Helper Service is to match trained Helper volunteers to support terminally ill people, their families and carers when they need it most. This could be by being a listening ear, helping them get to an appointment, offering a sitting service or engaging them in joint areas of interest. Marie Curie Helper volunteers offer valuable emotional and practical support to help people affected by a terminal illness get the most from the time they have left. We know little things can make such a big difference for those living with a terminal illness. All volunteers will undergo training before they start as well as on-going support throughout their time volunteering. If you’re interested, contact: Phone: 0845

073 8590* (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm)

Email: [email protected] You can also apply online by clicking here. Once our volunteers are established I will be accepting referrals to the service from healthcare professionals and social workers, as well as encouraging self-referrals from the terminally ill person or their family.

Annual Sponsored Steeplechase (part of the national ‘Ride & Stride’)

The Steeplechase has been held every year since 1980, and has been the largest single contributor to the Trust's funds. Most other county trusts hold similar events, previously called The Bike Ride or similar, but now all are part of the national event called Ride and Stride. For more details of the national event click here.

Great North Run – places available with Christian Aid. This year Christian Aid turned 70 – seven decades of working for a fairer and just world. We are looking for 70 runners to take part in the Great North Run on Sunday 13 September.

The main aim of the Steeplechase is to visit as many churches as reasonably possible in the day, with participants being sponsored for the number of churches they visit. Other ways of raising money are also acceptable, such as a church being sponsored for the number of visits it receives; or sponsoring younger children for circuits of the church yard. The income from the Steeplechase is shared between the Trust, and individual churches and chapels nominated by the participating Steeplechasers. In 2014 the event raised a total of nearly £8,000, an invaluable contribution to the upkeep of our historic churches.

You have the chance to be part of this movement, run 13.1 miles and help us in our mission to eradicate poverty. Register here and for more information contact Charmaine Bruce-Kotey: [email protected].

The 2015 Steeplechase will be held on Saturday 12 September. Many of the region's churches and chapels are fascinating and interesting places to visit: in the North East we are blessed with a particularly long and rich Christian heritage. So please come and join the 2015 Steeplechase: as you can see from the photograph the event is open to all age groups and you can use any means of transport - all we ask is that you take care. All the documentation you will need to take part can be downloaded here.

northumbriahct.org.uk As Archdeacons we get to visit many churches and the annual NHCT Steeplechase is a great opportunity for lots of people to share that privilege and pleasure. It's good to have a purpose for your walk or bike ride; this way you can get into great company too, and support the work of the local churches you visit as well as the conservation work of the Trust. Why not get out there in God's good air and discover - or rediscover - some of the places where his people meet to praise him and pray for his world? Tools for Church Leaders, 9-13 November 2015 Retreat at Open Gate Holy Island Bookings: [email protected] Monday: What are our key issues? Tuesday: Discernment, Models, Strategy We explore changing frameworks in society and church, ‘The Great Emergence’ and our place in it. Do we see ourselves as managers of decline, agents of transition, catalysts for fresh experiments? We explore models of church, including an Aidan and Hilda model, and our desired outcomes. Wednesday: God encounters: the inner life of the leader We explore inner demons such as addictive, defensive and dominating tendencies, disciplines that help us grow into the stature and suppleness of Christ, sources of nurture, ways of praying, life-giving rhythms, roots and relationships, and decisive encounters with God. Thursday: Tools and a Way of Life We will use the Aidan and Hilda Way of Life as a set of tools to help us develop the seeing eye, fruitful but non-driven ministry, accompanied exploring and values that help us identify priorities. Friday: Review and prayer There will be space to walk and time for one-to-one sessions. ______________________ Many church leaders are stressed by unrealistic expectations put upon them by others or themselves. While others talk of ‘the end of Christendom’ and of ‘The Great Emergence’ some feel bound to keep the existing institution afloat. All leaders need friendship, vision, skills and tools.

Understanding Congregations as Emotional Systems A Bridge Builders’ workshop training day for CMD, Newcastle Diocese Wednesday 8 July, 2015; Church House, Percy Main. 9.30am - 4.30pm Programme Running from 9.30am to 4.30pm, the programme includes worship, presentation, personal reflection, group discussion and experiential exercises.

 Explore how patterns of behaviour in families and churches are similar

 Understand better the systems of emotional forces that are at work

 Discover tools for charting the triggers of anxiety in church life  Practise managing your own reactive behaviour  Reflect on Jesus as a model of non-anxious leadership Session 1: Families and Systems Session 2: Owning Your Own Emotional “Script” Session 3: Non-anxious Leadership Session 4: Unhooking from the System

The Benedictine Rule has been used as a tool kit to help leaders create islands of stability in a sea of change. We will use the Aidan and Hilda Way of Life as a tool kit that equips us to navigate the seas of change: godly learning, the trail of the full human being, how to say no and win friends. Within the rhythms of nature and optional church and chapel services we will explore the question: Is there an Aidan and Hilda DNA for churches? We will connect the personal quest to live in the heart of Christ with the quest for the church to become Christ’s heart for the community it serves. Ray Simpson has ministered in both traditional and pioneer churches in rural, urban and multi-racial areas. He was commissioned by six church streams to plant ‘one family of Christians in one neighbourhood’ at Bowthorpe, Norwich. He is the Founding Guardian of the international Community of Aidan and Hilda and lives near the Community’s Retreat Centre and Study Library on Holy Island, where church leaders of diverse background come to consult. He is the author of over thirty books including Church of the Isles: the emerging church in Britain and Ireland – a prophetic strategy for renewal; the Cowshed Revolution; High Street Monasteries and New Celtic Monasticism for Everyday People (A Pilgrim Way).

Resources The Healer from Nazareth: Jesus’ Miracles in Historical Context – Eric Eve (T226.7 D and PM) This book puts the miracles of Jesus in their historical context, looking at Jewish and Greco-Roman miracle-workers, and theories about miracles from before the coming of Jesus. Eve then suggests that there was much that was unique, or at least new, in Jesus’ miracles, his use of them and their place in his ministry and tackles the question of whether Jesus’ miracles really happened. An ideal read for those interested in the finding out more about the context of Jesus' miracles.

The RRC is currently Thinking About Miracles... Every Miracle and Wonder in the Bible – Larry Richards (T226.7 PM) This book discusses in detail every miracle in the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and contains further information selected with Bible students, teachers, and ministers in mind. It explores the culture and theology from the world of the Bible and surveys the attitudes of Christians towards the miraculous from the early church fathers to today to further illuminate the discussion. With comprehensive indexes enabling quick access to each miracle, this is an essential reference book for those who wish to learn more about the miracles in the Bible. Remembrancers or pastoral cards from Peter Sutcliffe A range of pastoral cards tailored for clergy to use in their ministry has been launched by photographer and retired priest the Revd Peter Sutcliffe. For thirty years as a Vicar, Peter sent cards to people in almost every conceivable situation and nine times out of ten struggled to find a card with which he felt comfortable. Either the words were wrong, or the picture was too 'cheesy', and it just didn't feel right – so he often ended up making his own. Peter’s A6-size cards are left blank inside, making them easily adaptable. They look stylish and smart, though not ‘flash’, and at £1 each (plus postage) they won’t break the bank.

They can be seen and ordered online at www.petersutcliffephotography.co.uk. “Peter’s years of pastoral experience combined with his ability to see deeper significances in the things around him, have worked powerfully together to produce images which will resonate deeply with a wide variety of people. Using his cards would be a very useful addition to anyone’s way of caring for those around them.”

This summer (1 June to 31 August) Christians from across the UK have a unique opportunity to help people affected by leprosy in Mozambique. Every donation a person makes will be doubled by the UK government. So a £10 donation becomes £20, a £40 donation becomes £80 and so on! How can churches help people affected by leprosy? We are inviting churches to hold a church picnic and ramble to support people whose lives have been blighted by this disease. The Leprosy Mission has a free pack that churches can order, containing all the instructions, posters to advertise the picnic, and a DVD showing people in Mozambique and why they need our help.

Order your free church pack online at www.feetfirst.org.uk or 01733 370505.
