From Bishop Frank: Maundy Thursday Cathedral Service – 11am 2nd April 2015 I warmly invite the Clergy, Readers and the people of the Diocese to the Cathedral for the Maundy Thursday Chrism Eucharist. The Rt Revd John Packer, Honorary Assistant Bishop in this Diocese, will be our preacher. The service provides an opportunity for us all, lay and ordained, to renew our commitment to the service of Christ and his people. Also included will be the Blessing of the Oils, for use in Holy Baptism, Confirmation and the Anointing of the Sick. The Cathedral will provide the oils. Empty stocks and vessels should be brought to the Cathedral before 10.30am on Maundy Thursday, and collected at the end of the service. Further stocks of all oils can be obtained from Bishop’s House after Easter.

Day for Licensed Clergy – 25th June 2015 at the Cathedral I invite all licensed clergy to join me for a day of worship, reflection, consultation, and planning on 25th June 2015. Timings are to be confirmed but it is likely to be 10.00am-4.00pm, and will take place at the Cathedral. We will reflect together on the opportunities and challenges presented by the Reform and Renewal programme currently underway across the Church of England – looking at the future deployment of our resources in the context of ongoing work to promote numerical and spiritual growth, contribute to the common good, and reimagine ministry. There will also be the opportunity to reflect on where we are as a Diocese as we look to the appointment of a new Diocesan Bishop. Please put the date in your diaries: further details will be sent after Easter.

The Immigration Act 2014 – Marriage Provisions Update In addition to the last two last month’s notices, Diocesan Registrar Jane Lowdon writes... For clarification:

Following the introduction of the Immigration Act 2014 it will be necessary for clergy to check the identity of all parties who wish banns to be called in their parish.

In other words even though the couple do not intend to marry in that particular parish their identity must still be checked in accordance with the Regulations. www.newcastle.anglican.org

NEW CHURCHES IN THE NORTH EAST A day conference concerning new research into churches founded in the North East of England since 1980. The venue is St Johns College, Durham, Friday 17 April, 2015. The research is the result of a Leech Fellowship, held by the Centre for Church Growth Research at Cranmer Hall, Durham. It has uncovered well over 100 new churches founded in the North East since 1980, many of which are rooted in black, Asian and minority ethnic communities. The conference is an opportunity to learn about hitherto little known aspects of religious vitality in the contemporary North East.

ST HILDA’S TRUST Does your parish have plans to engage with children and young people? Is there a project you are struggling to get off the ground due to lack of funding? St Hilda’s Trust makes grants to organisations for charitable purposes, although these organisations need not necessarily be registered charities. The Trust’s main areas of concern within its overall objectives are children and young people who are disadvantaged in some way within the Diocese of Newcastle. Last year the trustees awarded £72,000 in grants to local organisations, parish and school projects, as well as major UK charities (where the funds benefitted those in our Diocese). Grants usually range from £500 to £5,000. The trustees would welcome more applications from local parish projects.
