St John the Baptist, Grainger Street, Newcastle upon Tyne

Does anyone know of a pair of attractive small/medium size altar candlesticks, which could be taken as a gift from Christians in the UK for the new Orthodox Church at Semkhoz near Moscow on the site where Father Alexander Men (see www.alexandermen.com) was murdered in September 1990?

The Parish Church of St John the Baptist, Newcastle upon Tyne, wishes to appoint a Director of Music.

Liz Roberts, Ann Shukman, Alastair Macnaughton and Diana Macnaughton are going to the conference in for the 25th Anniversary of Father Alexander’s death, and Father Viktor, parish priest at Semkhoz has specifically asked for candlesticks.

Full details: www.stjohnthebaptistnewcastle.co.uk.

Closing Date: 21/08/2015 For vacancies in the Diocese of Newcastle follow #nclcofejobs

Appeal for Volunteers

Has any parish a possible pair of candlesticks that they are prepared to donate to the parish of Semkhoz, in memory of Father Alexander?

Are you able to help spread the word that volunteers are needed at the UK Recovery Walk being held in Durham this year? Sat 12th Sept, 12.00 noon, The Sands. Big event for the NE!

Contact the Revd Canon Alastair Macnaughton: [email protected].

The charity UK Recovery Walk raises awareness of addiction & recovery. This year's conference focus on Spiritual pathways to recovery and one of the key note speakers will be Rt Revd Mark Bryant, Bishop of Jarrow. They are expecting 5 - 10k people to attend this event, with bands & food stalls etc by The Sands.

Any donation would require the formalities for disposing of church artefacts to be completed via the archdeacon’s office.

It would be really great if the Churches Together could support this event and the people who take part in it by acting as stewards throughout the day They are looking for marshals and stewards for a variety of tasks from 9.00am to 7.00pm (although we can divide this into shifts)

Pictured: site of the murder of Father Alexander Men and designated for the new church (from a BBC website).

Please can you publicise this in your church newsletters/ magazines. If anyone is willing to volunteer for any of the day they can contact Joanne Thorns; [email protected] or contact the Recovery walk at [email protected].

 If you would like to take part, you will need:

To all Readers:

 An enthusiasm for singing  To be likely to be available for 2-3 rehearsals in September

Please click here to download a poster with details of an exciting new opportunity.

 To be available to attend the Annual Licensing in St Nicholas’ Cathedral, Newcastle, on the afternoon of 3rd October.

For some years we have been blessed to have our Annual Licensing Service supported by an excellent choir, who have really added to the occasion. However, that choir has run its course and we’d like to explore the possibility of creating a Readers choir for the event – either a choir of all Readers or including Readers and other singers in support.

If you think this might be for you, or if you have any questions about the project, please let me know by 14th July, so we can assess how viable the idea is. With every good wish,

We’re delighted that Philip Sanderson has agreed to conduct such a choir for us, and we now need to find out how many Readers would be interested in taking part. The choir will sing about 3 special anthems during the service, as well as leading the hymn singing.

Annual Sponsored Steeplechase (part of the national ‘Ride & Stride’)

The Steeplechase has been held every year since 1980, and has been the largest single contributor to the Trust's funds. Most other county trusts hold similar events, previously called The Bike Ride or similar, but now all are part of the national event called Ride and Stride. For more details of the national event click here.

Great North Run – places available with Christian Aid. This year Christian Aid turned 70 – seven decades of working for a fairer and just world. We are looking for 70 runners to take part in the Great North Run on Sunday 13 September.

The main aim of the Steeplechase is to visit as many churches as reasonably possible in the day, with participants being sponsored for the number of churches they visit. Other ways of raising money are also acceptable, such as a church being sponsored for the number of visits it receives; or sponsoring younger children for circuits of the church yard. The income from the Steeplechase is shared between the Trust, and individual churches and chapels nominated by the participating Steeplechasers. In 2014 the event raised a total of nearly £8,000, an invaluable contribution to the upkeep of our historic churches.

You have the chance to be part of this movement, run 13.1 miles and help us in our mission to eradicate poverty. Register here and for more information contact Charmaine Bruce-Kotey: [email protected].

The 2015 Steeplechase will be held on Saturday 12 September. Many of the region's churches and chapels are fascinating and interesting places to visit: in the North East we are blessed with a particularly long and rich Christian heritage. So please come and join the 2015 Steeplechase: as you can see from the photograph the event is open to all age groups and you can use any means of transport - all we ask is that you take care. All the documentation you will need to take part can be downloaded here.

northumbriahct.org.uk As Archdeacons we get to visit many churches and the annual NHCT Steeplechase is a great opportunity for lots of people to share that privilege and pleasure. It's good to have a purpose for your walk or bike ride; this way you can get into great company too, and support the work of the local churches you visit as well as the conservation work of the Trust. Why not get out there in God's good air and discover - or rediscover - some of the places where his people meet to praise him and pray for his world? Tools for Church Leaders, 9-13 November 2015 Retreat at Open Gate Holy Island Bookings: [email protected] Monday: What are our key issues? Tuesday: Discernment, Models, Strategy We explore changing frameworks in society and church, ‘The Great Emergence’ and our place in it. Do we see ourselves as managers of decline, agents of transition, catalysts for fresh experiments? We explore models of church, including an Aidan and Hilda model, and our desired outcomes. Wednesday: God encounters: the inner life of the leader We explore inner demons such as addictive, defensive and dominating tendencies, disciplines that help us grow into the stature and suppleness of Christ, sources of nurture, ways of praying, life-giving rhythms, roots and relationships, and decisive encounters with God. Thursday: Tools and a Way of Life We will use the Aidan and Hilda Way of Life as a set of tools to help us develop the seeing eye, fruitful but non-driven ministry, accompanied exploring and values that help us identify priorities. Friday: Review and prayer There will be space to walk and time for one-to-one sessions. ______________________ Many church leaders are stressed by unrealistic expectations put upon them by others or themselves. While others talk of ‘the end of Christendom’ and of ‘The Great Emergence’ some feel bound to keep the existing institution afloat. All leaders need friendship, vision, skills and tools. The Benedictine Rule has been used as a tool kit to help leaders create islands of stability in a sea of change. We will use the Aidan and Hilda Way of Life as a tool kit that equips us to navigate the seas of change: godly learning, the trail of the full human being, how to say no and win friends. Within the rhythms of nature and optional church and chapel services we will explore the question: Is there an Aidan and Hilda DNA for churches? We will connect the personal quest to live in the heart of Christ with the quest for the church to become Christ’s heart for the community it serves. Ray Simpson has ministered in both traditional and pioneer churches in rural, urban and multi-racial areas. He was commissioned by six church streams to plant ‘one family of Christians in one neighbourhood’ at Bowthorpe, Norwich. He is the Founding Guardian of the international Community of Aidan and Hilda and lives near the Community’s Retreat Centre and Study Library on Holy Island, where church leaders of diverse background come to consult. He is the author of over thirty books including Church of the Isles: the emerging church in Britain and Ireland – a prophetic strategy for renewal; the Cowshed Revolution; High Street Monasteries and New Celtic Monasticism for Everyday People (A Pilgrim Way).

FOOD HYGIENE (Level 2) COURSE Saturday 3rd October 2015 9.00am – 4.30pm Church House, St John’s Terrace, North Shields NE29 6HS

There is a surprising amount of eating going on in the Bible! Perhaps that's why many churches understand the importance of hospitality in ministry and mission. Partners In Community Action (PARTNERS) has now offered several one-day training courses in Food Hygiene (Level 2, Nationally accredited): On Saturday October 3rd this year there will be a further training day. Whether it's opening a lunch club for the elderly, catering for a Messy Church, a drop-in for parents on their way to pick up children from school or arranging an evangelistic Supper event, if you wish to gain confidence in food-handling, then this course is for you. At the end of the day there is a short assessment. Everyone has always passed with flying colours! A certificate is awarded for all those who qualify. Please contact Mrs Josie Pinnegar: [email protected] or tel. 0191 270 4100 to book a place. The cost of the day is £44 per person; members of Anglican churches in Newcastle Diocese will be charged £22 per person (50% cost will be covered by PARTNERS). Please bring a packed lunch. www.newcastle.anglican.org/partners

Remembrancers or pastoral cards from Peter Sutcliffe A range of pastoral cards tailored for clergy to use in their ministry has been launched by photographer and retired priest the Revd Peter Sutcliffe. For thirty years as a Vicar, Peter sent cards to people in almost every conceivable situation and nine times out of ten struggled to find a card with which he felt comfortable. Either the words were wrong, or the picture was too 'cheesy', and it just didn't feel right – so he often ended up making his own. Peter’s A6-size cards are left blank inside, making them easily adaptable. They look stylish and smart, though not ‘flash’, and at £1 each (plus postage) they won’t break the bank.

They can be seen and ordered online at www.petersutcliffephotography.co.uk. “Peter’s years of pastoral experience combined with his ability to see deeper significances in the things around him, have worked powerfully together to produce images which will resonate deeply with a wide variety of people. Using his cards would be a very useful addition to anyone’s way of caring for those around them.” Ve
