Moves & Changes

The Companions of St Aidan and ordained folk who have a real heart for mission in their communities. It would be a community of people who are determined to reach out in new and dynamic ways and yet want also to connect to the Diocese and the wider Church. The Woodhorn Hosting (5th June 2016, 3.00pm— 8.00pm) is the first open meeting for any who would like to share in the creation and design of the Companions. Places are limited but we are keen to welcome all who have a heart for community mission and want to help the Companions move from an idea to a reality. To book a place and join us for the Hosting contact Archdeacon Geoff Miller on 0191 273 8245 or [email protected].

Last year the Church of England’s Renewal and Reform programme inspired a whole series of meetings across the Diocese. Towards the end of these meetings there emerged the germ of an idea - the creation of a mission order working throughout the whole diocese inspired by St Aidan. We gave this idea a working title: the Companions of St Aidan. Many have been energised by the possibilities that the initiative could bring and have been asking ‘How can I become part of it?’ The purpose of the Companions of St Aidan would be to bring together, encourage, network and mobilise lay

Lord Crewe’s Charity Educational Grants 2016-17 In the current academic year (2015-16) the Charity made educational grants to 24 members of the clergy in Newcastle Diocese totalling just under £58,000. The application process for educational grants to clergy in the Diocese for their dependant children is now open for the next academic year (2016-17). Grants are made at the Trustees’ absolute discretion for children of school age in full-time education (reception class and above) or studying for a first degree or equivalent level skills course, and who are dependants of: a) necessitous clergy (stipendiary or not) licensed, or having permission to officiate, by the Bishop of Durham or the Bishop of Newcastle b) retired clergy, licensed and serving in either of these two dioceses at the time of their retirement c) widows and widowers, still residing in the area, of clergy who were licensed or given permission to officiate as above and previously served in the area. Awards will be based on the: a) family’s gross income from ALL sources (ignoring expenses) up to a specified level (£49,240 in the year 2016-17): anyone over this limit will not qualify for assistance, except in the circumstances described at c below) b) school year (NB NOT age of children) as at 1st October 2016 (divided into four bands): c) all clergy licensed or having permission to officiate in the dioceses of Durham and Newcastle may apply for an award during each year of any dependant’s attendance on a first full-time degree or equivalent skills course. In this category only the trustees, at their absolute discretion and without prejudice, may consider the applicant’s overall financial circumstances irrespective of the strict household income limit at a) above, and may make a reduced award in these circumstances. Grants recognise the additional costs of having children in education, i.e. they do not depend on children being at fee paying schools. Application is by a short form (2 sides A4) which must be completed and returned by June 20th 2016. Decisions will be made in August and awards will be paid by BACS transfer in two equal instalments, in September 2016 and March 2017. If we do not already have your bank details you will need to complete a short form giving us your bank details and authorising us to use them. There is also a short guidance note for applicants. Those wishing to apply are strongly advised to register with the clergy section of the Lord Crewe’s Charity web site: www.lordcrewescharity.org.uk/clergy. Once your registration is accepted you will be able to download the forms and guidance, and see any updates on this year’s progress. Registered Charity No. 1155101

The Anglican Centre in Rome promoting Christian unity in a divided world or working together for God’s Kingdom of righteousness and justice OUR MISSION The Anglican Centre in Rome promotes Christian unity in a divided world It is a permanent Anglican Communion presence in Rome Its Director is the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Representative to the Holy See It exercises a ministry of hospitality and prayer, and provides educational opportunities and resources

Fifty years ago, on Tuesday in Holy Week, March 22nd 1966 Michael Ramsey, the Archbishop of Canterbury, dedicated the Anglican Centre in Rome. Two days later, on Maundy Thursday, the Archbishop met with Pope Paul VI. They issued a Common Declaration which gave thanks that the Holy Spirit had made a new atmosphere of Christian fellowship possible between the Roman Catholic Church and the Christians of the Anglican Communion. As a result of the meeting, the Anglican Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) was set up to engage in a serious dialogue which might lead to that ‘unity in truth for which Christ prayed.’ Services to commemorate these events are to be: Wednesday in Holy Week – St Andrew by the Wardrobe in London; 12.30pm, Holy Communion June 4, 2016 – Westminster Abbey; 5.00pm, Choral Evensong. Local events, which will include a pilgrimage to Holy Island, are to be announced. Details from [email protected] www.anglicancentreinrome.org

Steeplechase Saturday 10 September 2016 The Steeplechase will no longer be a sponsored event, and churches that choose to be open for visitors, do not need to sign forms or have anyone present on the day. Those visiting churches may make a donation to the church they visit and/or to the Northumbria Historic Churches Trust. To register your church, please email [email protected] and then print the poster that may be downloaded from the website www.northumbriahct.org.uk for display.

DEMENTIA AWARENESS WEEK 2016 15TH – 21ST MAY

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT THE FEARS WE HAVE ABOUT DEMENTIA? HOW ABOUT HOSTING A DEMENTIA FRIENDS SESSION? Dementia Friends is an Alzheimer’s Society led initiative. It aims to increase dementia awareness and change the way the nation thinks, talks and acts about dementia. A Dementia Friend is someone who has attended an information session (which lasts no longer than an hour) and who has committed to an action that will make the lives of people living with dementia a little bit better. Anyone can be a Dementia Friend and every action counts - from helping someone to find the right bus to spreading the word about dementia on social media. The initial target of one million has been overtaken and the next step is four million by 2020! Dementia Friends Champions are trained volunteers who are equipped to encourage others to understand a little bit more about dementia, what it’s like to live with dementia and then turn that understanding into action. I am a volunteer "Dementia Friend Champion" trained and supported by the Alzheimer's Society to deliver Dementia Friends information sessions. I used to work with people with dementia and their carers including when Chaplaincy Team Leader, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust. I have contributed to training NHS staff and publications about dementia care and am impressed by the comprehensive yet accessible nature of these informative and interactive sessions. I look forward to sharing one with you!

PLEASE CONTACT ME IF YOUR PLACE OF WORSHIP, WORK PLACE OR LOCAL COMMUNITY GROUP WOULD BE INTERESTING IN HOSTING A SESSION TO MARK DEMENTIA AWARENESS WEEK.

Rural Mission Sunday 2016 Last year the Arthur Rank Centre launched Rural Mission Sunday - a real opportunity for churches to celebrate who they are and give thanks for their community. This year the date for RMS is July the 17th, but you can mark this at any time over the summer to suit you and those you work with. This year the theme is 'Sow and Grow' so why not celebrate the seeds you sow as a church? Sometimes we feel overshadowed in the rural church by larger urban churches. We don't always think that small churches 'do mission'. At the ARC we think differently. We feel passionately about the importance of small churches; we know they do mission and want to celebrate that fact.

Starting on 23 May, if you are a carer for a person living with dementia then this is a course for you. When it comes to understanding and supporting a person living with dementia, family carers are very often the most skilled and knowledgeable. Yet, you will know that carers can face a number of really stressful situations that can be difficult to deal with. This course will provide you with knowledge and advice that can help you connect with and care for someone living with dementia. We will focus on everyday experiences that are seen as particularly challenging and stressful. Sign up at: www.futurelearn.com/courses/dementia-care

Resources

This month the RRC is Thinking About

Wealth and Poverty Black Gold (PM 248.36) This powerful documentary contrasts the life of coffee-growers in Ethiopia with those in the Western world. It explores the problems of global trade, showing who truly pays for low prices and demonstrates powerfully how important Fair Trade and 'trade not aid' really is.

The True cost of low prices (PM 248.36) This book explores globalization, poverty and wealth in the world today, with chapters covering slave labour, violence and the treatment of children. It dispels myths around world hunger and contains facts and figures on foreign aid and what poor workers are paid versus what the goods are actually sold for.

From the Revd Canon Ian Flintoft, Bishop’s Chaplain:

The Queen’s 90th Birthday The Church Buildings Council, with the approval and agreement of the Archbishops, is encouraging parish churches to organise a festival on the weekend of 10-12 June 2016, to celebrate The Queen’s 90th birthday and her role as Supreme Governor of the Church of England. This will coincide with official celebrations taking place in London. The Council notes that ‘the variety of potential forms for the celebrations is huge, from flower to organ, bell-ringing or choir festivals, from food to beer festivals.’ Parishes might like to organise an event which will contribute to their Mission Action Plan. Further details can be found here: www.churchcare.co.uk/about-us/campaigns/news/943-queen-s-90th-birthday The Liturgical Commission has written two collects, which have been personally approved by Her Majesty The Queen for use at services celebrating her ninetieth birthday later this year. Two graces for use at church and community gatherings have also been produced. The texts can be found here: www.churchofengland.org/media-centre/news/2016/02/prayers-for-hm-the -queen%E2%80%99s-90th-birthday-published.aspx Churches are being encouraged to share their plans to mark Her Majesty's birthday through the Church Care website, which also offers tips and advice on planning events and services and will promote initiatives on a dedicated celebration map and on Twitter through @CofE_ChurchCare using #HMQ90.

What Price Peace? 2016 - Remembering the Battle of the Somme - What’s the point for church schools? The First World War centenary has created surprising levels of popular interest in the events of 100 years ago. Perhaps your school marked the anniversary of the 1914 Christmas truce, discovered local stories of volunteers going off to ‘do their bit’, and researched names on the local war memorial. 1916 marked the moment when the war ‘stepped up a gear’. From July to November, thousands of troops were enmeshed in a series of deadly encounters now known as the Battle of the Somme. Casualties were enormous on both sides. Many of the new volunteer regiments experienced their first taste of battle during the ‘Great Push’ which, despite its great human cost, probably decided the course of the war. So - why explore this conflict with children in primary school? It’s because ‘War’ and ‘Peace’ continue to dominate our news headlines and popular culture- as many of our local communities and schools struggle to deal with the human consequences of current events. But studying the past is an excellent way to discuss what is happening now, ‘at a distance’- by turning the centenary into a significant opportunity for Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education. ‘What price peace?’ uses the experience of the First World War to explore questions like:  Is fighting OK if you believe you are right?  What does it mean to be ‘British’?  Is God ever on anyone’s ‘side’?  When should we speak out if we think something is wrong?  How do we make peace with those we don’t get on with?  Is it OK to play with war games and toys? To support schools in this project, we’ve created a creative-arts-based Barnabas RE Day, a CPD training course for staff with online support materials, and a cross-curricular teacher’s resource book by Chris Hudson (Barnabas team member for the North-East and a serving Reader in the Parish of Morpeth). Feedback from teaching staff for the Barnabas RE Day has included comments like: ‘An outstanding, thought-provoking session, promoting and supporting reflection upon important questions and answers.’ ‘All the children enjoyed the workshop, each child was able to join in the activity, SEN, EAL and G&T children were all enthralled.’ ‘I wish someone had explained the First World War to me like this when I was younger, I might not have failed my History A-level!’ For more details, visit www.barnabasinschools.org.uk/what-price-peace. Alternatively, email Chris Hudson at [email protected]
