Moves

May I encourage you, please, to consider offering some financial support (perhaps through Lent collections or a one-off fundraiser), as well as drawing your congregation's attention to the appeal?

From the Bishop of Newcastle I would like to draw the attention of parishes to the appeal for funding in the West End Refugee Service (WERS) newsletter - link below. WERS carries out invaluable work in supporting some of the most vulnerable in our society, meeting their very real material and emotional needs. I know that a number of our parishes already offer support, and that is very much appreciated.

Every blessing,

Lead theft Ecclesiastical Insurance draws our attention to police reports of lead thefts from church roofs in which they suspect a ‘sign’ has been left to indicate to others intent on theft that an alarm system has been disabled. The suspected sign comes in the form of a stone left on top of one or two sticks leaned against an external wall beneath possibly unprotected leadwork. We are all urged to be especially vigilant, since the price of scrap lead is currently soaring and this is likely to prompt a surge in lead crimes.

Security Our friends in Carlisle Diocese have circulated details of a theft from donation boxes at Lanercost Priory (just over the diocesan border along the A69), which took place on Sunday 22nd January between the end of church and the building being locked up. The damage to the boxes is more costly than the relatively small loss of cash. Two people were involved – both dressed in red tops and one with a hood – with the thefts believed to have taken place shortly after 2.30pm. Please maintain vigilance as far as possible.

Completion of 2016 Statistics for Mission Returns We have been asked to complete the returns by 31st January 2017 to enable quick processing of data collection and dissemination within the Church. This will allow deployment and other resource decisions to be taken (whether by dioceses or national Church bodies) on the basis of up-to-date data. Please do get in touch if you need assistance whether it be to change a password or add a new user to the national parish returns site: parishreturns.churchofengland.org. This is also accessible through our own diocesan website at www.newcastle.anglican.org/statsforms. Gillian Green, Finance Officer, Diocese of Newcastle. 0191 270 4131, [email protected].

St Columba’s Episcopal Church, Portree Holidays on the Isle of Skye The Rectory Flat at St Columba's is available for clergy holidays and those with an active church connection. Centrally heated throughout, the flat sleeps four with one double and one twin bedroom. A bathroom (with bath), shower and WC complete the facilities. Portree is the vibrant capital of the Isle of Skye and the perfect base for exploring the island. The Rectory Flat is located just off Somerled Square in Portree and is within a few minutes walking distance to all the town’s facilities. There are numerous restaurants, cafes and pubs; several of these are located alongside the colourful harbour. ‘Celebrating a Life’ - remembering our lost children 2.00pm Saturday 28 January 2017, St John's Church, Grainger Street (Newcastle).

The death of a child at any age is the most terrible thing to happen to any parent. If it has happened to you, you will know that you never thought you would be able to continue living without your beloved child. In fact for a long time you feel it would be easier to be dead! Sometimes your faith is a great help but at other times you feel so angry with God. Often a bereaved parent only feels safe when with other bereaved parents who understand their pain. On Saturday 28th January at 2.00pm St John's Church, Grainger Street (Newcastle) will hold their annual 'Celebrating a Life' service when bereaved parents, relatives and friends bring a photograph of their child who has died. They bring flowers to place at the altar. This is a beautiful service conducted by our priest Father Nicholas Buxton and assisted by our choir. We light a candle for our beloved child. After the service we have refreshments in the hall where you can meet other bereaved parents. Do come if you can!
