Lord Crewe’s Charity Educational Grants 2016-17 In the current academic year (2015-16) the Charity made educational grants to 24 members of the clergy in Newcastle Diocese totalling just under £58,000. The application process for educational grants to clergy in the Diocese for their dependant children is now open for the next academic year (2016-17). Grants are made at the Trustees’ absolute discretion for children of school age in full-time education (reception class and above) or studying for a first degree or equivalent level skills course, and who are dependants of: a) necessitous clergy (stipendiary or not) licensed, or having permission to officiate, by the Bishop of Durham or the Bishop of Newcastle b) retired clergy, licensed and serving in either of these two dioceses at the time of their retirement c) widows and widowers, still residing in the area, of clergy who were licensed or given permission to officiate as above and previously served in the area. Awards will be based on the: a) family’s gross income from ALL sources (ignoring expenses) up to a specified level (£49,240 in the year 2016-17): anyone over this limit will not qualify for assistance, except in the circumstances described at c below) b) school year (NB NOT age of children) as at 1st October 2016 (divided into four bands): c) all clergy licensed or having permission to officiate in the dioceses of Durham and Newcastle may apply for an award during each year of any dependant’s attendance on a first full-time degree or equivalent skills course. In this category only the trustees, at their absolute discretion and without prejudice, may consider the applicant’s overall financial circumstances irrespective of the strict household income limit at a) above, and may make a reduced award in these circumstances. Grants recognise the additional costs of having children in education, i.e. they do not depend on children being at fee paying schools. Application is by a short form (2 sides A4) which must be completed and returned by June 20 th 2016. Decisions will be made in August and awards will be paid by BACS transfer in two equal instalments, in September 2016 and March 2017. If we do not already have your bank details you will need to complete a short form giving us your bank details and authorising us to use them. There is also a short guidance note for applicants. Those wishing to apply are strongly advised to register with the clergy section of the Lord Crewe’s Charity web site: www.lordcrewescharity.org.uk/clergy. Once your registration is accepted you will be able to download the forms and guidance, and see any updates on this year’s progress. Registered Charity No. 1155101

Job Vacancy The Farne Churches Youth and Family Outreach ( FCYAFO) seeks to appoint a

Youth Worker An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and dedicated Christian to work with this newly established charity on a beautiful part of the Northumberland coast. The Charity seeks to appoint a youth and family worker to support all the churches in the area in their work with children, young people, and families. This area has a deep Christian history. The job covers the area from Craster to Belford (including Seahouses). It is an area of small rural and seaside churches. Means of transport essential. The successful candidate will lead and pioneer work among children and families in this ecumenical project. The Charity is an Associate Body, working with Scripture Union. The person appointed will be a ‘self starter’ who is able to develop new initiatives working with local churches, schools and groups. Salary will be between £19,000 and £21,000 p.a. depending on qualification and experience. The post is initially for two years, but it is hoped to extend it beyond that. Closing date for applications is 31st March 2016. It is anticipated that interviews will be held after that date with appointment as soon as is practical. For further information, and to apply, contact: George Scott: [email protected] or 01665 720466 or John Holwell [email protected] or 07984 355363 This role has an occupational requirement to be filled by a committed Christian. Job Vacancy Holy Saviour, Tynemouth is looking to appoint a

Musical Director Holy Saviour, Tynemouth (HST) is already a fairly large church but has a vision to grow much larger! As part of our strategy for growth we are looking to broaden its musical range as we build on our strong musical foundations. We are looking for an excellent keyboard player who can also galvanise, lead and develop a worship band to enhance our worship. Ideally the director would also be competent at playing the organ or willing to undertake a conversion course to develop this skill for worship, weddings and funerals. We envisage a mixed economy of band and organ, traditional and modern. We already have a core of mixed ability musicians who play at occasional services and we want to see that being developed into a much fuller role. This post has a salary of £4,000 per annum plus direct payments for weddings and funerals. For a job description and application form please contact: Elizabeth Brown, Parish Administrator, The Church of the Holy Saviour, Tynemouth Priory, Tynemouth. NE30 2LD [email protected]

Archbishops Call for ‘Great Wave of Prayer’ for Evangelism During Pentecost The Archbishops of Canterbury and York are inviting churches to pray for the evangelisation of the nation during the week before Pentecost Sunday. The Archbishops have written to every serving parish priest in the Church of England expressing their longing “to see a great wave of prayer across our land, throughout the Church of England and many other Churches” from 8th-15th May. The week of prayer will culminate in ‘Beacon Events’ around the country over Pentecost weekend, where people will pray for the renewal of the Holy Spirit and the confidence to share their faith. The Archbishops are suggesting various ways churches can engage with the week of prayer. These include holding a day or week of continuous ‘24/7’ prayer as parishes, teams or deaneries; saying special prayers in Sunday worship; prayer walking; or handing out a novena prayer card to every congregation member.

Archbishop Justin will send a message via live video link to other Beacon Events taking place at the same time as the Canterbury event. Partners in the week of prayer initiative include 24-7 Prayer, HOPE, the World Prayer Centre, the Neighbourhood Prayer, Network, and the National Day of Prayer and Worship.

Beacon Event: Durham Cathedral 15/05/16 | 7.00 pm Leadership: Bishop of Durham 24-7: Phil Togwell Worship Central: Lou Fellingham

register for tickets

In their letter the Archbishops said: “At the heart of our prayers will be words that Jesus himself taught us – ‘Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.’ It is impossible to overstate the lifetransforming power of the Lord’s Prayer. It is a prayer that is reassuring enough to be on the lips of the dying and yet dangerous enough to be banned in cinemas. “It is famous enough to be spoken each day by billions in hundreds of languages and yet intimate enough to draw us ever closer into friendship with Jesus Christ. It is simple enough to be memorised by small children and yet profound enough to sustain a whole lifetime of prayer. When we pray it with sincerity and with joy, there is no imagining the new ways in which God can use us to his glory.”

Coming up at Shepherds Dene

Learn from the Birds! Mark Winter Sat 30th April, 9.30am - 4pm

Knitting and Crochet Retreat Monday 4th—Wednesday 6th April A relaxed post-Easter crafting retreat at Shepherd's Dene, including yarn swap-shop, peer support on skills and collage workshop. Optional prayer and quiet sessions. For more details and booking form, email Revd Elizabeth Brown [email protected] or phone 01670 515556. Cost £135

Changing Gear —John Bell retreat

Jesus told his followers that they can learn about God’s goodness from watching birds and seeing how they are provided for. Christians throughout the ages have taken that lesson to heart, including local Celtic saints like Cuthbert who was perhaps the first Briton to argue for the protection of birds – like the local Eider Duck that allegedly kept his feet warm in gratitude! Local wildlife guide, Mark, has been watching birds for over 30 years and runs unusual retreats that combine bird watching with Christian worship. Cost £25

Pentecost Quiet Day

Weds 13th - Fri 15th April 2016. Price £235.

Revd Audrey McCartan In the traditional denominations of the western Friday 13th May church the word 'change' both unites and Cost £20 polarises. There is agreement that things should change, but which things – music, liturgy, buildings, organisational structures? Yet, at the Quiet Day: Christian Poetry for a Summer's centre of the Christian faith is a God who changes (or does he?), a Saviour who is Day resurrected, and a Spirit intended to make all Bishop John Packer things new. Friday 10th June Rather than become embroiled in the detail of which colour to Bishop John Packer was Bishop of Warrington, then Bishop of paint the ladies' toilet, in this retreat we will look at the anatomy Ripon and Leeds until 2014. of change and of resistance, identifying ways in which we can Cost £20 understand and enable change to happen. John Bell, member of the Wild Goose Resource Team, works all over the world. Here he will draw on examples of good and bad practice in the many churches in which he has worked as a consultant or retreat leader. Cost £245.00

The Anglican Centre in Rome promoting Christian unity in a divided world or working together for God’s Kingdom of righteousness and justice OUR MISSION The Anglican Centre in Rome promotes Christian unity in a divided world It is a permanent Anglican Communion presence in Rome Its Director is the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Representative to the Holy See It exercises a ministry of hospitality and prayer, and provides educational opportunities and resources

Fifty years ago, on Tuesday in Holy Week, March 22nd 1966 Michael Ramsey, the Archbishop of Canterbury, dedicated the Anglican Centre in Rome. Two days later, on Maundy Thursday, the Archbishop met with Pope Paul VI. They issued a Common Declaration which gave thanks that the Holy Spirit had made a new atmosphere of Christian fellowship possible between the Roman Catholic Church and the Christians of the Anglican Communion. As a result of the meeting, the Anglican Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) was set up to engage in a serious dialogue which might lead to that ‘unity in truth for which Christ prayed.’ Services to commemorate these events are to be: Wednesday in Holy Week – St Andrew by the Wardrobe in London; 12.30pm, Holy Communion June 4, 2016 – Westminster Abbey; 5.00pm, Choral Evensong. Local events, which will include a pilgrimage to Holy Island, are to be announced. Details from [email protected] www.anglicancentreinrome.org

Steeplechase Saturday 10 September 2016 The Steeplechase will no longer be a sponsored event, and churches that choose to be open for visitors, do not need to sign forms or have anyone present on the day. Those visiting churches may make a donation to the church they visit and/or to the Northumbria Historic Churches Trust. Rural Mission Sunday 2016 In 2015 the Arthur Rank Centre launched Rural Mission Sunday - a real opportunity for churches to celebrate who they are and give thanks for their community. This year the date for RMS is July the 17th, but you can mark this at any time over the summer to suit you and those you work with. This year the theme is 'Sow and Grow' so why not celebrate the seeds you sow as a church? Sometimes we feel overshadowed in the rural church by larger urban churches. We don't always think that small churches 'do mission'. At the ARC we think differently. We feel passionately about the importance of small churches; we know they do mission and want to celebrate that fact.

From the Revd Canon Ian Flintoft, Bishop’s Chaplain:

The Queen’s 90th Birthday The Church Buildings Council, with the approval and agreement of the Archbishops, is encouraging parish churches to organise a festival on the weekend of 10-12 June 2016, to celebrate The Queen’s 90th birthday and her role as Supreme Governor of the Church of England. This will coincide with official celebrations taking place in London. The Council notes that ‘the variety of potential forms for the celebrations is huge, from flower to organ, bell-ringing or choir festivals, from food to beer festivals.’ Parishes might like to organise an event which will contribute to their Mission Action Plan. Further details can be found here: www.churchcare.co.uk/about-us/campaigns/news/943-queen-s-90th-birthday The Liturgical Commission has written two collects, which have been personally approved by Her Majesty The Queen for use at services celebrating her ninetieth birthday later this year. Two graces for use at church and community gatherings have also been produced. The texts can be found here: www.churchofengland.org/media-centre/news/2016/02/prayers-for-hm-the -queen%E2%80%99s-90th-birthday-published.aspx Churches are being encouraged to share their plans to mark Her Majesty's birthday through the Church Care website, which also offers tips and advice on planning events and services and will promote initiatives on a dedicated celebration map and on Twitter through @CofE_ChurchCare using #HMQ90.
