On the run! The Revd Michael Houston is a retired clergyman in the Carlisle Diocese who is entered in the Great North Run on September 10th, running for the Children with Cancer Charity. He is having great difficulty finding accommodation for Saturday 9th September; rooms are either already taken or the prices have increased to well over £200 for one night! Are there any clergy or laity in Newcastle that may have a spare bed for the Saturday night they would be able and willing to offer? He would obviously cover any expense they would incur. Contact 017683 52783 or [email protected].

St Columba’s Episcopal Church, Portree Holidays on the Isle of Skye The Rectory Flat at St Columba's is available for clergy holidays and those with an active church connection. The flat is available on a self-catering donation basis for £350 per week. This upstairs flat was fully refurbished recently. It includes a kitchen/diner and a large lounge with wood burning stove. Centrally heated throughout, the flat sleeps four with one double and one twin bedroom. A bathroom (with bath), shower and WC complete the facilities. Portree is the vibrant capital of the Isle of Skye and the perfect base for exploring the island. The Rectory Flat is located just off Somerled Square in Portree and is within a few minutes walking distance to all the town’s facilities. There are numerous restaurants, cafes and pubs; several of these are located alongside the colourful harbour. For bookings or further information please contact Robert MacDonald Tel: 01478 613069 or e-mail [email protected]

RE-Vitalise Narrative Preaching With the Revd John Russell. What did you preach about last Sunday? When Jesus is asked ‘who is my neighbour?’, he doesn’t explore the concept of the neighbour in the Old Testament, nor derive it from his doctrine of God. He says, ‘a certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves…’ and two thousand years later, we all remember the story that he told. Narrative Preaching is about ‘incarnating’ our preaching within story and image. This RE-Vitalise session will introduce Narrative Preaching to those unfamiliar with what it can offer. When: 7th November 2017 12:00 – 2:00 pm (Lunch will be provided) Where: Church House, Percy Main, North Shields, NE29 6HS

‘When I had a Proper Job!’ A Conversation@theRRC This Conversation will attempt to address the following issues (and more): What gifts and skills can we bring/have we brought into Ministry? How will/did the change impact on Family life? What major adjustments have we made/will we have to make? When: Tuesday 25th April 2017, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Where: Cuthbert House, Stonebridge, Durham, DH1 3RY

‘Dirty Little secret’: Christians and Pornography – A Conversation@theRRC Internet pornography is a huge issue facing our society and especially young people today. Although often a ‘dirty little secret’, it’s one that we can’t afford to sweep under the rug. Join Mark McKnight for a Conversation@theRRC which will address the following questions:

 

All are welcome but places are limited and must be booked. Early booking is recommended to avoid disappointment. To book a place please contact the RRC on 0191 375 0586 or via [email protected].

How do we respond?

How do we help people who are struggling? What can we do about it? Mark is a youth worker, a publisher, a husband and father from Northern Ireland sojourning in County Durham. He also volunteers with Naked Truth Project, trying to open eyes and free lives from the destructive impact of pornography. When: Tuesday 9th May 2017, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Where: Cuthbert House, Stonebridge, Durham, DH1 3RY

Resources

Top borrower 2016... Ellen Omobude

The resources centre has been great. It has assisted me in my studies at Lindisfarne, my placements and personal growth and faith.

I’ve just been informed that I’ve been the member who has borrowed the most resources from the Religious Resources Centre in 2016…!

Nevertheless, I must admit that at times the centre can appear to be a labyrinth, especially when an assignment deadline draws nearer and you rush in to get those books that hopefully match.

To be honest, I never expected this, because every time I’m in the resources centre, I see people carrying staples of books away, just like me.

The way out of this situation is simply to ask the staff for a helping hand; they are really great. They have proved to me that they know where everything can be found (although I must say that in this scenario it’s still handy to have some names of book titles and authors ready to hand...).

It just shows that the resources centre provides exactly what we all are looking for: interesting books that provide inspiration and knowledge throughout the year.

Many books come from all over the world and here it’s within our reach and made available to all. I simply think we should all cherish the existence of the resources centre, and help to maintain it in any way we can.

But I think it’s not just a passion for books that plays a role here; it’s more a passion for Christ that makes this happen.
