See page 2 for more from the police on church safety and security Saying farewell to Bishop Frank There will be a service of thanksgiving to God for the ministry of Assistant Bishop of Newcastle the Rt Revd Frank White at St Nicholas’ Cathedral, Newcastle, at 2.30pm on Sunday 18th September 2016. This is likely to be popular so please reserve your place through Ellie Robertson, Cathedral Administrator ([email protected]), and please arrive by public transport if possible to relieve pressure on city centre car parks.

Praying a blessing As Bishop Frank prepares to retire at the end of September, the Diocesan Worship & Music Task Group thought that it would be good to offer people across the Diocese a prayer of blessing to pray him on his way. We were delighted when Archdeacon Geoff Miller agreed to write this beautiful prayer (pictured right) – and Bishop Christine commends it for our use. We hope that you find it helpful. Letter from Deputy Assistant Commissioner Mr Neil Basu, Metropolitan Police, on behalf of Northumbria Police & the Metropolitan Police

Following the terrible murder of Father Jacques Hamel in France, and the attack on his congregation our thoughts are with their loved ones, his congregation, community and once again the people of France. We are again reminded of the indiscriminate nature of terrorism and the brutal and senseless actions of these criminals. Other recent attacks have focused on innocent people enjoying their freedoms, celebrating with their loved ones, and going about their daily business side by side with other communities of every faith creed and colour. The police have been working with church leaders here in the UK to establish a communication network through which reassurance and guidance to the Christian community can be passed. This is a terrible tragedy but we must use it to test our ability to communicate to this wider network and I want to offer the following advice. Church leaders and their congregations here in the UK should remain alert not alarmed. There is no current intelligence to suggest any attack planning of this nature in this country. However I know these are troubling times and it makes sense for all church leaders to review their security plans and to encourage their flock to be vigilant. Any suspicious behaviour should be reported immediately through 999 or the anti-terrorist hotline 0800 789 321. Advice and guidance on personal security and security for places of worship, as with many other locations, can be found here: www.gov.uk/government/publications/counter-terrorism-protective-security-advice-for-places-of-worship on the National Counter Terrorism website. In addition to this advice, commencing today, the Home Office are running a scheme for 8 weeks offering funding for protective security measures subject to application. Detailed information on how to apply can be found at www.gov.uk/guidance/places-of-worship-security-funding-scheme. Can I also encourage you all to forge close links with your local police commanders who will be able to advise you further on sensible safety precautions. I know many of you will already have a strong relationship in place. Additional advice can be found on NaCTSO website: www.nactso.gov.uk. Run Hide Tell: www.gov.uk/government/publications/stay-safe-film Suzy Lamplugh Trust: www.suzylamplugh.org

Confirmations 2017 Parish clergy are encouraged to request Confirmation dates in 2017 through your Area Dean even if you have no candidates at present—it is always much easier to cancel a date than to find one. Those who wish to share a Confirmation Service with their neighbouring parishes are of course most welcome to do so. Area Deans are requested to submit details of 2017 Confirmation requests for their Deanery to Canon Lesley Towers at Bishop’s House in the next few weeks, and certainly by not later than 25th September, 2016, including any requests from those parishes who wish to have a service of Confirmation undertaken by the Bishop of Beverley, the Rt Revd Glyn Webster. The agreed list for 2017 will be circulated with a future edition of the Bulletin. Requests received after the list has been prepared and circulated WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED unless a parish has been in a period of interregnum. Why your church needs to know about Pokémon GO First of all, what is Pokémon GO? Pokémon GO is a mobile and tablet app game which lets players find Pokémon (Animated creatures, first created in the 90′s, which players have to catch, train and battle with). The game takes place in augmented reality (meaning the game combines real life action with virtual gaming) by using GPS as you walk around towns, cities and other locations to find the Pokémon. The game has been an overnight sensation with millions playing it around the world. Why does your church need to know? Your church might be a ‘PokéStop’ - real life buildings and landmarks that players have to visit to get certain items they need to play the game. Your church could also be a ‘Gym’ where players can battle their Pokémon (being a Gym means people spend significantly more time battling Pokémon). Pokémon Go is therefore giving churches around the country a great opportunity to meet people from their area who might not normally come to church. However, we all need to be aware that this game means that children under the age of 18 may come into contact with people who may present a risk. How do you know if your church is a Pokestop or a Gym? Download Pokémon Go on your mobile or tablet. Through the game you will be able to see if your church is a PokéStop or a gym. You might also spot people standing outside the church on their phones who may be playing the game and at your ‘PokéStop’. What can your church to do get involved?

Place welcome signs outside: encourage them to come inside and offer them drinks and snacks. The game also uses a lot of battery so why not create a battery charging station? If you’ve got it, let them connect to the church’s wifi

Speak to players about the game: learn how to play it yourself, it’s a good way to start a conversation that may lead on to other things.

Hold a Pokeparty like Christ Church Stone: www.facebook.com/events/246500169067368. Tweet about it: Don’t forget to use hashtag #PokemonGo. Safeguarding Advice The NSPCC has issued advice to parents of those children playing Pokémon GO in the UK. Whilst we would encourage churches to engage with those playing the game, be they adults or children, we also understand the concerns that the NSPCC have raised with regards to keeping children safe. Our first priority as a church should be to provide a safe place for children and vulnerable adults with regards to Pokémon GO. Please make sure you read the advice on the NSPCC’s website here: www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-abuse/keeping-children-safe/online-safety/pokemon-go-parents-guide. If you have any concerns in relation to those playing Pokémon GO, please feel free to talk to Diocesan safeguarding Adviser Ruth Rogan on 07825 167 016 or [email protected].

Bowen Clergy Coaching Group FINAL FEW SPACES! Wishing for additional skills to cope with challenging pastoral situations? Seeking a healthy way through when caught between disagreeing church members? Trying to find a balance between reaching consensus and needing to make decisions? This six session group coaching course commencing in September is designed to offer an empowering response to the emotional demands of ministry and draws upon two main ideas: Murray Bowen’s systems theory, which offers a framework for thinking about congregational relationships as reflective of all human relationships and Jesus as an example of individual behaviour. ‘Leadership is essentially an emotional process rather than a cognitive phenomenon’ Edwin Friedman, A Failure of Nerve The group will be formed of eight participants and will offer a safe forum for processing challenging situations in ministry. There is a mixture of presentation, exploration of key concepts, facilitated small group work and opportunities for personal reflection in the light of new learning. The six, monthly sessions each last half a day and every session builds from those that come before. The group work initially focuses on understanding relationships in your own family and then applies these insights to relationships in your ministry context. ‘Leadership always takes place in the context of a living system and the system plays by a set of observable rules.’ Jim Herrington, The Leader’s Journey This coaching group is one of three running in different dioceses around the country and forms part of a wider research project investigating resources to support clergy well-being and resilience. For more information and to find out how to sign up please read the attached information booklet. “Thought-provoking, challenging, energising, revealing, freeing – I return to work with a renewed and hopeful perspective and commitment.” Previous clergy participant If you would like to join a coaching group please contact Canon Peter Kenney on 0191 257 9512 or [email protected]. The Society of Mary, whilst being one of the Catholic Societies of the Church of England, has members in churches and countries all over the world. The objects of the Society are: 

to love and honour Mary.

to spread devotion to her in reparation for past neglect and misunderstanding and in the cause of Christian Unity

to take Mary as a model in purity, personal relationships, and family life.

Membership is open to all who are willing to keep the Rule, which includes: 

Members shall keep a Rule of Life, which will include such special devotions as the Angelus, the Rosary, the Litany and Anthems of Our Lady.

They will pray for departed members of the Society and offer Mass for them.

They will take part in the Mass on the principal Feasts of Our Lady.

They will engage in apostolic and pastoral work, according to opportunity, under the guidance of the local Ward Officers and the General Council.

The Society of Mary is not affiliated to any individual Marian shrine or institution and is keen to promote equally all the different aspects of devotion to Mary. For more information please contact the Ward Superior: Fr John Swinhoe SSC The Vicarage, Brierley Rd, Cowpen. Blyth. Tel 01670 364169. [email protected]

The Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament (CBS) The Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament (CBS) was founded in 1862 as part of the Catholic Revival in the Church of England. Its aim was to be, first of all, a confraternity (brotherhood) of men and women praying and working for a greater devotion to Jesus Christ in the Eucharist and in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Today it is no longer confined to England alone but has spread to many places within the Anglican Communion of churches, especially in Great Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and parts of Africa. There is a separate, self-governing CBS in the USA. Wherever possible members of CBS meet together in local Wards for prayer, worship and mutual support under the guidance of a priest as Ward Superior. We honour Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament in other ways too: Mass said daily, Holy Hours are prayed, and Benediction is celebrated regularly in many of our churches. There is an increasing emphasis on mission in CBS's work: "We have a Gospel to proclaim", says the famous hymn, and there are many ways to proclaim it in Word and Sacrament. We need more priests to celebrate Mass, but we also need to promote the mission of the Church through the whole people of God by equipping them (you) for service. Please pray for our work for, at heart we remain a devotional society, focussing on Christ's very own gift to us of His Body, the Blessed Sacrament, the sacrament of Unity. For more information please contact the Ward Superior: Fr John Swinhoe SSC The Vicarage, Brierley Rd, Cowpen. Blyth. Tel 01670 364169. [email protected]

WaterAid’s vision is of a world where everyone has access to safe water and sanitation. The international organisation works in 37 countries across Africa, Asia, Central America and the Pacific Region to transform lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in some of the world’s poorest communities. Since 1981, WaterAid has reached 23 million people with safe water and, since 2004, 21 million people with sanitation. For more information, visit www.wateraid.org, follow @WaterAidUK on Twitter, or visit us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/wateraid. Around 315,000 children die each year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by dirty water and poor sanitation. That’s nearly 900 children each day. Over 650 million people (around one in ten) are without safe water Over 2.3 billion people (around one in three) live without improved sanitation or every £1 invested in water and sanitation, an average of £4 is returned in increased productivity. Just £15 can help provide one person with access to safe water.

Springs is now inviting churches to host a 20th year anniversary performance of Journey of the Magi, which will be available nationally from 19 th November to 23rd December 2016. Journey of the Magi – A festive, witty and thoroughly Christmassy event for your church! Springs is proud to present the 20th anniversary tour of this critically acclaimed production! A spectacular part of the UK's family Christmas theatre scene. With sparkle and songs to keep the kids engrossed and plenty of in-jokes for the adults to enjoy, Journey of the Magi delights audiences of all ages. This hilarious and poignant show parallels the original Christmas story with our own preparations for Christmas day. “Brilliant, multi-talented show with depth, passion and an inspired storyline. We laughed, cried and understood what words alone can’t convey...” Further information can be found on the Springs Dance Company website or by emailing Rebecca on [email protected] or call 07876 752910.

Celebrate Harvest with Self Help Africa Celebrate Harvest this year with a Shropshire-based charity that helps families in rural Africa to feed themselves. Self Help Africa is offering a FREE Harvest Resource Pack to help you plan your Harvest celebration. It includes stories from Africa, suggested prayers and hymns, children’s activities and fundraising ideas. To order your free pack and any extra materials, please call Joseph Nunn on 01743 277170, email [email protected] or download resources directly from www.selfhelpafrica.org/uk/harvest-appeal Self Help Africa can also arrange for one of their Church Ambassadors to come and speak to your church during your Harvest service or at another time to suit you. They book up quickly so call or email as soon as possible to secure a speaker for your church. With more than 30 years’ experience of working with rural communities in Africa, Shrewsbury-based Self Help Africa has developed an approach which works. They don’t give hands outs or aid; they give families the skills and knowledge they need to grow enough to feed themselves and to manage their own lives. By celebrating Harvest with Self Help Africa, you’ll be helping African families to feed their children and have enough food for years to come.
