MENTAL HEALTH

A glass of lemon water can energize your mood and help reduce depression.

medibuddy.in

Let’s Talk Openly About Mental Illness! When an illness is associated with a stigma, it aggravates the pain and agony felt by the patients and their families. To remove the stigma associated with mental illnesses, it is important for us to talk openly about mental health and actively support people around us with mental health conditions. 1. Approach the person, assess and assist with any crisis 2. Listen non-judgmentally 3. Give support and information 4. Encourage the person to get appropriate professional help 5. Encourage the person to use self-help strategies and actively seek support Mental well-being ought to be on your mind! Connect with people around you and try to build relationships with them. Exercise your mind as consciously as you exercise your body. Keep learning and increase your skill sets - take a course on a new subject, learn a new game or acquire a new hobby. Be kind and giving to others - a smile, some words of gratitude or a small act of kindness can work extremely well to improve your mental well-being. Take time off for mental relaxation. Consider activities like meditation to calm your mind. Pay attention to your feelings, thoughts and the way you respond to the world around you.

Skin Care in Winter: Tips to Get That Winter Glow Love the winter mornings when you wake up with a glow on your face? But what happens when the temperature continues to drop, bringing with it diet and lifestyle changes? The toll it takes on your skin is evident with dry, flaky skin particularly on the face and limbs. Try incorporating these tips into your winter skin care regimen to keep that glow: Say no to steaming hot showers: With hot water, you are stripping away much-needed oils on the skin. Try lukewarm or warm water instead. Moisturize right after a bath: It’s best time to moisturize your skin! Choose the right moisturizer: Choose moisturizers with natural, nourishing ingredients like oatmeal and opt for oil-based creams and lotions. Layer up with sunscreen: The winter sun can cause damage too! So don’t forget to add a layer of sunscreen after your moisturize. Don’t forget to exfoliate: Exfoliation sloughs off dead cells in your skin that barricade the benefits of a skin care regimen. Moisturizers and creams cannot effectively penetrate a surface full of dead cells. Nourishment inside-out: Give your skin a boost from the inside with your diet and lifestyle. Include food rich in antioxidants and Omega 3, 6, 7 and 9 in your diet.

EYES

Avoid dry eyes by placing bowls of water around your room to boost humidity in the air. medibuddy.in

Stay aware of Common Eye Problems Eye problems can range from minor issues to serious problems which can lead to permanent loss of vision. Eye infection, dry eyes and eye inflammation can cause scratchy and watery eyes. Allergic conjunctivitis causes watery, red, itchy eyes with a discharge and needs immediate medical attention. Cataract, the leading cause of blindness, clouds the lens of the eyes and leads to blurred/double vision, poor night vision, dull colors, glare problems. Glaucoma damages the eye’s optic nerve which leads to vision loss, but early treatment can protect your eyes before permanent damage occurs. Tips to Protect Your Vision: Get a comprehensive dilated eye exam regularly to check for common eye problems. Know your family’s eye health history as many conditions are hereditary. Include dark leafy greens such as spinach, colorful fruits like carrots and fish high in omega-3 fatty acids. Protect your eyes from ultraviolet radiations by wearing sunglasses that block at least 99% of these harmful rays. If you use contact lenses, practice hygiene to prevent infection.

Oral hygiene begins with regular dental visits. Find your closest dentist and book a dental consultation on MediBuddy.

DENTAL

Use a mouthwash regularly to prevent gum disease and tooth decay.

medibuddy.in

Dental Diseases: Common Problems You Are Likely to Face Teeth are kept quite busy all day. Given their workload and the amount of bacteria, both good and bad, that they are exposed to, it’s only natural that they need some extra care. Stop avoiding the dentist and make an appointment when you notice these symptoms. Bad Breath In most cases, constant bad breath doesn’t just mean poor oral hygiene, it’s often an indication of other dental conditions like gum diseases, dental cavities, dry mouth, bacteria on the tongue, or at the very worst – oral cancer. Tooth Decay aka Cavities Cavities occur when sugar and starch from food we eat combines with plaque, a sticky substance that forms on teeth. This results in acids that attack tooth enamel. While a simple sitting to clean teeth might be enough in early stages, a root canal may be suggested if the decay has spread. Gum Disease Did you know gum disease is the main cause of tooth loss in adults? Although the disease can affect anyone, those over 30 years of age are more susceptible. Smoking and diabetes are also risk factors. Tooth Sensitivity Tooth sensitivity can be caused by a cracked tooth or due to a tooth abscess. Whatever the cause, sensitive teeth can be treated easily.

THYROID

If you experience fatigue, muscle aches, weight gain and depression, check for hypothyroidism. medibuddy.in

The TSH Test - What You Should Know TSH stands for thyroid stimulating hormone and the TSH test helps measure the level of this hormone in your blood. Any imbalances in the production of this hormone can show up in the form of various symptoms. Based on these symptoms, your physician may recommend the TSH test. Preparing for the test TSH is a simple test that requires your blood sample and does not require overnight fasting. However, it’s recommended to take the test in the morning as TSH levels fluctuate through the day. What do low or high levels of TSH indicate? The normal range for TSH is anywhere between 0.4 - 5 mIU/L (milli-international units per liter). If the test reveals lower than normal levels of TSH, it could mean an overactive thyroid. The causes for it could be: Excessive iodine in the body. Excessive thyroid hormone medication. An excessive intake of a natural supplement that could contain the thyroid hormone. Medications like steroids, dopamine, or morphine could also trigger the reading. Graves’ disease - a condition where the body’s immune system attacks the thyroid. If the TSH level is higher than the ideal range, it could be an indication of an underactive thyroid.

SEXUAL HEALTH

Get yourself screened for sexually transmitted diseases or infections regularly.

medibuddy.in

Sexually Transmitted Infections: What You Must Know Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), also referred to as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), are common; the complexity being that carriers often don’t realise that they are infected. Listed here are the eight most common types of STIs: Genital herpes. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection or condyloma acuminatum. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Gonorrhea. Syphilis. Trichomoniasis. Hepatitis. Chlamydia. STI Prevention STIs are preventable; they are treatable too by making sure you take stock of your health when you are sexually active. Screening or testing is the only way to know for sure about possible infections. Know your partner’s sexual history. Always use a condom - a latex condom is recommended for use as its risk of breakage is lower. Be aware of immunization and preventive medication to lower the chances of getting infected.
