Nutrition is a serious concern in the region as evidenced by the high stunting levels, 3/8 countries have stunting levels of >40 per cent or very high severity of malnutrition. High levels of stunting are associated with poor socioeconomic conditions and increased risk of frequent and early exposure to adverse conditions such as illness and/or inappropriate feeding practices (WHO). Government and nutrition partners in the region should urgently scale up treatment, and focus on prevention and linkages to resilience programming.

There has been a general decrease in the number of food insecure people as harvests continue across the region. Following an extended dry period and delayed onset of rains, a large part of the arid, semi-arid lands (ASALs) have received below-average rainfall providing limited relief. Above-average to average rains have been received in north-western Kenya and south-western South Sudan, while flooding has been reported in south-central Somalia; Ethiopia’s Afar region; and displacement sites in South Sudan. This excessive rainfall and flooding are expected to replenish water resources. However there are concerns over the negative impact on cropping conditions and post-harvest losses in flood-inundated areas. The ICPAC October - December 2014 Outlook predicts rains will continue through December 2014 into January 2015. The overall post-harvest food security situation will be assessed by individual IPC country teams in early 2015.
