Brookville Equipment Corporation recently partnered with the Northwest Laborers-Employers Training Trust at their Elma, Wash.-based Safety & Hazard Awareness for Tunnels (S.H.A.F.T.) School through the provision of a 15-ton tunneling locomotive. The BROOKVILLE diesel-powered locomotive will be used in simulated haulage applications by the training school. The locomotive is an industry standard transportation tool and will allow students hands-on training during their coursework at the school. Northwest Laborers-Employers Training Trust (NWLETT) developed the S.H.A.F.T. program at Satsop Business Park, which was originally constructed as a nuclear power plant that was never finished. Created with input from multiple industry influencers, the program features both practical and classroom training for areas such as comprehensive tunnel safety, tunnel rail, shoring and utilities installation, overview of soft ground tunnel boring machines and locomotives. “Brookville is committed to safety – it’s the cornerstone of each product we manufacture. We are proud to partner with S.H.A.F.T. to provide practical safety and operational training to tunneling professionals,” said Michael White, marketing manager, Brookville Equipment Corp. “We are hopeful it can make a positive contribution to S.H.A.F.T. and for the industry as a whole.”

Watch ‘The BROOKVILLE Difference’

The President’s Corner By Larry Conrad

2013 proved to be one of BROOKVILLE’s most exciting years on record – as we continued to create new and innovative products for our customers and also secured several orders that will allow us to continue to do so in 2014 and beyond. We kicked off the year with the announcement that we will be producing our first off-wire capable Liberty Modern Streetcars for the City of Dallas. This exciting new design will showcase our latest innovations – including the inclusion of a lithium-ion battery-powered on-board energy storage system (OESS), allowing the cars to operate off-wire for over a mile. It will be the only streetcar of its kind to be engineered, designed and manufactured in the United States and we are excited to bring this concept to life in 2014. Later in 2013 we secured a rebuild order with long-time customer Metro-North Railroad for seven diesel-electric general purpose locomotives. We are excited to expand our portfolio with Metro-North, which already includes the design and build of twelve 2250hp multipurpose locomotives, two CoGenerationTM locomotives and two 72-ton diesel-electric switchers since 2000. In our mining division, we manufactured our largest underground locomotives to date – four 50-ton standard gauge diesel locomotives with car brakes and also exported three narrow-gauge 23.5-tonne (26-ton) battery locomotives to Costa Rica, both shining examples of how BROOKVILLE’s talent is applied to create completely custom solutions for our customers around the globe. Internally, we celebrated our key achievements – including the shipment of our first BL36PH commuter locomotive to Tri-Rail in South Florida, and commended our employees for meeting goals, working safely and their dedication to BROOKVILLE.

23.5-Tonne Battery Locomotive

Costa Rica’s Cachi hydroelectric power plant recently received a shipment of three BROOKVILLE 23.5-tonne (26-ton) battery-powered locomotives. The locomotives will be used in construction and operation of the Cachi Dam expansion which will supply power to 330,000 people. The locomotives were designed to be operated in the warm, moist environment of Costa Rica where average rainfalls are six feet (2m) or more per year. As a result, the units have an enclosed cab, air brakes, separate cooling package for the electronic drive system and 75hp GE drive motors. The order marked a continued partnership between BROOKVILLE and Costa Rica’s Grupo ICE that began in 1976 with their first order since 1979.

BROOKVILLE Begins Seven Locomotive Rebuild for Metro-North Railroad

BROOKVILLE is currently restoring the first of seven GP35 diesel-electric locomotives for Metro-North Railroad, after being awarded a contract for the project in the summer of 2013.

Originally manufactured in 1966 by General Motors Electro-Motive Diesel and rebuilt once from 1991 to 1992, the 3500 horsepower locomotives are primarily used for maintenance and utility applications. The GP35s will undergo extensive restorations of the frame, engine, alternator, braking system, trucks and a complete refinishing, in addition to the integration of a new, state-of-theart locomotive control system.

Additional locomotives in the order are set to arrive in 2014 as the progressive rebuild will continue through 2015 at BROOKVILLE’s main facility. The order marks a continued partnership with MTA, which includes the production of two 72-ton diesel electric switchers, two multi-engine BL14CG CoGenerationTM locomotives and 12 diesel-electric BL20GH multi-purpose locomotives.

BROOKVILLE poured sparkling punch and posed for a photo with the first BL36PH locomotive before it departed for Tri-Rail’s three-county passenger rail line, serving the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Palm Beach region. The BL36PH features an MTU 3600-horsepower prime mover engine, an aerodynamic all-steel bullet nose, semi-monocoque frame design and rides on BROOKVILLE’s own adapted Blomberg-style trucks. Head end power (HEP) for the unit will be provided via a separate 600kW gen-set. As the first locomotive model BROOKVILLE has produced that will be fully dedicated to passenger and commuter service, the BL36PH features several innovative features in addition to its aerodynamic design. The locomotives are EPA Tier 3-compliant and can become Tier 4-compliant with an aftermarket exhaust treatment upgrade in the field. With safety at the forefront, the BROOKVILLE-adapted Blomberg trucks feature classic tread brake units and additional braking capacity through disc brake units, which also function as a parking brake. In addition, the BL36PH includes a locomotive control system with an easy-to-use touch screen interface, allowing operators and monitors to receive instant diagnostics and take instant action in the cab and remotely. Several other locomotives in the order are currently on-site in Miami, and the complete order of 12 will be fulfilled in 2014.

50-Ton Mining Locomotive

BROOKVILLE produced its largest underground locomotives in history in 2013 – four 50-ton units that feature a 335-horsepower Cummins® diesel engine, car brakes, and remote control capabilities. Designed to be operated on a dedicated haulage loop in a copper mine, where the lead unit remotely operates the trailing unit on a dedicated radio frequency to achieve the combined tractive effort needed to tame 1,100 tons of ore cars. The locomotives are geared for power, so their top speed will not exceed 12-mph, providing the highest adhesion available for a locomotive this size. The locomotives will operate on standard 56.5-inch track gauge in Mexico.

Buzz is building around the Liberty Streetcar order for Dallas, making it the third most-read press release in Mass Transit magazine in 2013.

Re-read the Details

Antique Showcase: Flatbed Switcher In 1940, BROOKVILLE produced the pictured flatbed locomotive for use by the Clawson Chemical Company, a wood chemicals producer in Hallton, Pa. The gas-powered locomotive features a Ford Flathead V8 engine and runs on standard 56.5-inch gauge. Standard coupler height allowed the unit to to haul lighter carloads on the main line, but its flat bed also made it a mobile solution for tools and materials delivery. Located only 27 miles north of BROOKVILLE, Hallton, Pa. was once a bustling lumber town of more than 2,100 people. Today, it is primarily a camping, hunting and fishing destination along the Clarion River.

2013 Annual Safety Awards On October 23, 2013, the BROOKVILLE Safety Committee presented more than 140 BROOKVILLE production employees with their choice of a casual or work jacket as a salute for going 365 days without a reportable incident. Each year, production staff are eligible to earn a six-month award and twelve-month award, starting every October. A different award is selected each year by the safety committee, composed of BROOKVILLE staff from all departments.

Board of Directors

The BROOKVILLE Board of Directors held their annual review meeting on December 20, 2013 to review the year and discuss the present and future of the company. 2014 will be BROOKVILLE’s 96th year of operation. Pictured (left to right) are Chris Rhoades, Andy Cable, Stan Bailey, Nancy McNeil, Dalph McNeil, Larry Conrad, Woody Yeaney, Josh Bish, Dave Taylor, Brent McNeil, Shaina McNeil, and Joel McNeil.

Earlier in 2013, BROOKVILLE adopted its new safety slogan ‘Be Sure. Be Safe.’ The message (in the form of the logo above) is displayed on 10 different signs at strategic, highly-visible locations inside and outside all BROOKVILLE facilities.
