Ecclesfield School Food Bank Appeal And Christmas Hamper Collection 2016

Over the past few years Ecclesfield School has collected nearly two tons of food for St Saviours food bank. The food bank was set up by Maureen and Alan Greaves in December 2012 to help those less fortunate in our community. Three weeks later, on Christmas Eve, Alan Greaves was murdered, but his wife was determined to make a difference to the local community by keeping the food bank up and running. What is a food bank and how can a food helpstudents weeks we are bank asking your community?

Over the course of the next two to bring in an item of food (or more if you can spare it) to donate to the food bank. Last year we collected over a ton of food, which is equal to over 2,000 tins of beans! Can we beat that figure this year?

Watch this short video on what food banks are doing and who they are helping:

What can you can donate? The food bank already has lots of certain foods and are low on others. To help the food bank stocks and the volunteers sort the donated food, we have been asked to do things slightly different this year. Each form has been allocated an item or type of food to collect. This will help the food bank collect the foods which are low in stock and will save the volunteers having to sort through donations, meaning it will be easier and faster for to distribute the food to those that are in need.

Christmas hampers for the elderly As well as collecting for the food bank, this year we are working with Age UK to collect food to be put into Christmas hampers for older people who will be spending Christmas alone this year. Age UK Sheffield believes that no one should have no one. Not at Christmas. Not ever. We're doing our best to make this a reality; working hard all year round helping older people in Sheffield when times get tough, and with your help we can keep working towards a city where no one in later life has to be lonely. Each form is invited to fill their hamper with ‘goodies’ and Christmas messages which will hopefully help to spread some Ecclesfield Christmas cheer to those in our community who may be lonely or isolated this Christmas. Each form will have 2 cardboard boxes to collect their donations – 1 for the food bank and 1 for the Age UK hampers. On Thursday 15th December the boxes will be taken to Lady Mabel Hall during mentor time. The house with the most items in their boxes will gain house points for the overall house competition. We are asking everyone to try and bring in one item, but if you can spare more it is greatly appreciated!
