Letter from the CEO

Sector News

Dear EDAMA members and friends, I'm honored to write my first message to you within my capacity as EDAMA CEO. I will be utilizing this corner every quarter to update you on specific EDAMA pillars and projects. This issue of our newsletter comes to you in a new look that we hope meets your expectations. The new format is part of a wider attempt to re-launch EDAMA's communication platforms to cope with sector development dynamics and its members' and network needs. As far as social media is concerned, EDAMA is activating its platforms to engage wider audience and raise awareness on sector progress and impacts from an economic, social and environmental perspective. We are planning to showcase success stories from our members and partners that would reflect the promising prospects in the green economy sectors in Jordan. I encourage you to examine our communication and media platforms and send us your feedback, success stories and suggestions to incorporate in the coming issues and posts. While EDAMA continues its support to the renewable energy sector through maintaining effective dialogue with the relevant public sector agencies as well as member companies, we believe that it's time to utilize EDAMA's experience in advocating for more private sector participation in other green economy sectors such as water and waste. As the world moves collectively towards low-carbon development, the private sector will play a bigger role in realizing such a transformation and EDAMA is ready to lead the way through its members and partners. Allow me to end this message by expressing EDAMA's gratitude to its members and partners for their continued support and confidence throughout the years. It is with such genuine partnerships that development goals become a reality.

Jordan to Launch Accreditation System for Energy Service Providers

Sincerely, Ruba A. Al-Zubi

The joint coalition (EDAMA Association, Jordan Green Building Council and Renewable Energy Establishment Society) supported by USAID ESCB finalized the Energy Service Providers Accreditation System that will be launched later this summer. The accreditation system is a voluntary one and aims to enhance the performance and quality standards of renewable energy and energy efficiency service providers as well as protect consumers. The system was based on international standards (in cooperation with NAESCO) while catering for the characteristics and individuality of the local market. Members will be given priority in applying for the first accreditation cycle to be announced soon. The first Energy Service Providers Forum will be organized by the coalition in September and will include discussion sessions as well as business networking. JREEEF Signs Agreements with Commercial Banks The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund (JREEEF) signed agreements with commercial banks on June 23rd 2016 to support the financing of renewable energy projects for various programs implemented by JREEEF. These agreements are intended to speed up the implementation of projects and provide funding to support the beneficiaries of JREEEF's various programs, which include individuals, small and medium-sized enterprises and public institutions. JREEEF will support technical studies as well as interest for bank loans with a ceiling of 250,000 dinars for companies and institutions, and a ceiling of 3,000 dinars for the residential sector. Participating banks which are members of EDAMA are: Ahli Bank, Bank al Etihad, Cairo Amman Bank and Capital Bank of Jordan.

Congratulations!

To Maher Maymoun, Tala Nasraween and Layth Hamad from Jordan on winning awards for their energy related innovations at the 2016 GIST Tech-I Competition. You made us proud!

Interest for electric vehicles (EVs) is developing quite quickly. As of December 2015, the global stock consisted of 720,000 all-electric cars and 480,000 plug-in hybrids. Of these, over 500,000 were sold in 2015, representing a third of the global stock as of May 2016. Despite their rapid growth, plug-in electric cars represented 0.1% of the one billion cars on the world's roads by the end of 2015. Cumulative global sales passed the 1.5-million-unit milestone in May 2016.

Shams al Urdon: Promoting Jordan's Renewable Energy Potential

The top 3 countries leading this major growth in electric cars are the USA, the UK and Norway. What these countries have in common is that they offer supportive policies such as tax breaks which were responsible for the good growth rates. For example, the U.S government offers tax credits up to $7,500 for zero or low-emission vehicle purchases, and Norway’s tax cuts are generous to the point that the Tesla Model S costs less than comparable gas-burning luxury cars made by Porsche and BMW.

Ask the Expert

Dr. Ayman Smadi - Greater Amman Municipality In Jordan, the burden of fuel prices on the national economy and the 7% rise in the number of cars annually prompted the Kingdom to head towards supporting and expanding the use of electric cars. During the World Economic Forum on the MENA region in May 2016, a memorandum of understanding was signed with manufacturers of electric cars - Tesla, BMW and Renault - to gradually adopt the use of electric vehicles in the public sector as an environment-friendly means of transport. Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) is already using 4 electric vehicles, and plans to eventually use 150. Taxi Al Mumayaz is the first taxi fleet in the Middle East to use electric cars. By the end of April 2016, there were 690 electric vehicles in Jordan. GAM is developing 10 electric vehicle charging stations through a partnership with the French Government and another 10 stations through a partnership with Nissan. These charging stations should provide at least some comfort to would be electric vehicle buyers until a more extensive network of chargers is developed across Jordan. Last year, the government decided to exempt electric cars from registration fees, which range between JD8,000 and JD9,000. The licensing renewal costs JD100 per year. In May 2016, the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission issued instructions for electric vehicle charging stations. The instructions stipulate that the electricity tariff for charging electric vehicles shall not exceed 100 fils per kilowatt hour. EDAMA can play a role in institutionalizing a regulatory framework in partnership with the public sector, ensuring that electric vehicle charging stations are connected to renewable energy sources, developing skills and attracting foreign investment. Opportunities for the private sector lie in effective partnerships with the public sector and local authorities, to support the deployment of electric vehicles through market instruments such as financing, marketing, building infrastructure, incorporating smart technology applications and operation and maintenance.
