BANGLADESH EDUCATION FOR ALL

Bangladesh has emerged as one of the developing world’s biggest success stories in achieving education targets set out under Millennium Development Goals. The Education for All (EFA) initiative was adopted as part of the development vision of the Awami League Government in Bangladesh led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The country has achieved 100% enrolment rate and gender parity in primary education. Visions 2021 and 2041 of present government include eradicating illiteracy forever and embracing inclusive education. As the global leaders have pledged to put in their efforts in making education inclusive for all by 2030, Bangladesh now stands to make yet another success story by taking the lead in ensuring quality education.

DISTRIBUTION OF FREE TEXTBOOKS Distribution of free textbooks for all students up to secondary education is an exemplary initiative as applauded by both national and international actors. The current government has successfully distributed free textbooks to students from 1st to 9th grades since 2011 in order to create opportunity of education for all and to prevent dropout. In the 2016 academic year alone, more than 44.4 million primary school goers received 333.8 million free textbooks.

STEPS TOWARDS INCLUSIVE EDUCATION The participation of children with special needs is now at its peak with government’s continuous efforts and commitment to inclusive education. In 2015, 85,204 students with special needs were enrolled in all types of schools from which 49,368 went to Government Primary Schools (GPS). School textbooks are now readily available in the Braille print for the visually challenged and significant progress is being made in setting up as many as 61 schools for children with different needs. This year, decision has been taken to print the education text books in 5 different languages for the children from ethnic minorities.

DIGITIZING EDUCATION The government had transformed books made by National Curriculum of Textbook Board (NCTB) into interactive multimedia digital content. All school textbooks are now available for free download in e-book formats. The government is in the process of establishing multimedia classrooms (with visual aids) in over 65,000 primary schools by 2021, of which about 5,000 schools received hardware and connectivity. Lessons delivered for best performing public schools through television broadcast is a recent initiative of the government. Multimedia content creates an innovative and engaging learning environment, moving away from the teacher-centric classroom.
