Travel with Andrew Coulson, as he explores the educational establishment, its history, and how politics can sometimes impede the growth of good schools, effective teachers, and the involvement of entrepreneur educators. #102 - Push or Pull The late Andrew Coulson, education policy analyst, travels to Michigan’s prestigious Cranbrook Schools, one of the top ten private high schools in America, in Push or Pull, the second episode of School Inc. Cranbrook and other excellent private schools in America typically don’t “scale up” to replicate their excellence on a larger stage and serve more students. So, is there some place else where scaling up excellence is happening? The answer is “yes” and it is in America’s Charter schools, but when charter schools are seen to compete with public schools, there can be trouble ahead. #103 -Forces and Choices Ten years after Chile reformed its education system, Sweden followed suit. It is the first stop in Forces and Choices, episode three of School Inc. All private schools in Sweden are now fully tax supported and parents can choose between these so-called “free” schools and the local public schools. The camp was Fort Ontario Army Camp in Oswego, NY. Through interviews with former refugees and archival footage, Safe Haven, airing on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV, tells the story of America’s only refugee shelter for Holocaust victims. radiation than the Hiroshima Bomb. It was the world’s worst nuclear disaster. Thirty workers died, 50,000 people fled the nearest city, and radioactive fallout made an area larger than Long Island a no-go zone. Hastily, a socalled “sarcophagus” was built to contain the radioactive materials that lingered at the site after the explosion. But 30 years later, the sarcophagus is crumbling, and another disaster at Chernobyl looms. Now, an international team of engineers is racing the clock to assemble one of the most ambitious superstructures ever built—an extraordinary 40,000 ton, $1.5 billion dome to encase the crumbling remains of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. Battling arctic winter weather—and lethal radiation—this is the inside story of the epic race to build Chernobyl’s MegaTomb. Share A Student Book Review on Homework Hotline

NEW TIME Homework Hotline Monday–Thursday 4:30-5 pm Visit: http://homeworkhotline.org/

HOMEWORK HOTLINE airs weeknights Monday through Thursday at 5:30-6 p.m. during the school year. The book review segments air on the Thursday program of HOMEWORK HOTLINE. HOMEWORK HOTLINE is also broadcast LIVE and carried on PBS television stations in New York State.

While homework is often a big concern for students, it’s also a great way for parents to communicate with their child about what they are learning. A recent study found that interactive communication around homework, where students get help from family members, leads to more parent involvement in their school. Homework Hotline provides families with additional help and support for success with homework.

How does it work?: A WXXI producer and cameraman will come to your school and set up their taping equipment in your Library. – Set up takes about 15-20 minutes. It should be a time when the library is not conducting classes - It really has to be QUIET—AND – Students participating in the book reviews do better when they don’t have an audience.

Homework Hotline is WXXI’s live statewide call-in show where kids receive help with homework problems right on the air. Designed for children in grades four through 12, the program – which is now in its 24th season – provides the tools students need to succeed with homework, and supports academic achievement across a variety of New York State Learning Standards.

Choose 5 to 7 students grades 4th and up (3rd graders are considered if you have students that you think are exceptional and not “shy” to the camera.) Students should have 1-2 minute prepared book reports – Students CAN read from their notes

Teachers from Dial-A-Teacher take the calls and send them to WXXI studios in Rochester, where host teachers, who are experts in subjects across the curriculum, are standing by ready to help kids work through their homework.

 

In addition to providing homework help, Homework Hotline presents daily thematic segments on health, animals, book reviews, history, environment issues, and people and places in New York State.

  

Homework Hotline sends out daily updates and helpful hints for the “Teaser” question on its Facebook page. http://facebook.com/HomeworkHotlineTV

Visual aids prepared by the student are welcome: Students can dress up as the character of their book to present their reviews In the past, students have brought in drawings or other art projects that are related to their book WE ARE FLEXIBLE – CREATIVE IS GOOD! If you participated last year—feel free to join in again this year!

Please be sure the student brings the book they are reviewing to the taping – we will need it to take pictures of the book.

Homework Hotline airs Monday through Thursday at 4:30-5:00 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 and streamed live at: http://homeworkhotline.org/

Total taping for all students will be a couple of hours – it depends on how smoothly the students do their reviews. Some students might have to do the review twice – depending on their comfort level on camera. We want this experience to be a positive one and have the student present their reviews so that they feel comfortable with their performance.

For Homework Help Call: Dial-A-Teacher: Mon.-Thurs. 4-7pm (585) 262-5000 (in the Rochester, NY area) 1-888-986-2345 (toll free everywhere else)

Before the taping teachers and students are encouraged to tune into a Thursday night segment of HOMEWORK HOTLINE Book Reviews or visit http://homeworkhotline.org/ to see archived book reports to get an idea of what is expected of the student.

Using social media outlets, Homework Hotline has made it easier for students and teachers to find and share videos on math, health, zoology, and history through its YouTube channel at youtube.com/HomeworkHotlineTV.

After the broadcast—WXXI will provide to your school one DVD copy of the HOMEWORK HOTLINE edited book report segments that features your student book reports.

Homework Hotline has received ten New York State Broadcasters Association Awards for best program or series designed for children, plus a 2010 My Source Education Innovation Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Silver Telly, Bronze Telly, and an Aurora Award. Homework Hotline is funded in part by the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT).
