Move over service sector

News

Lock on to fresh ideas

So, the latest news on the street is that the UK’s productivity is once again under pressure when compared with the rest of the world. Surprise, surprise.

10

It’s what happens when successive governments adhere to the mantra that as developed countries evolve over time they naturally move from primary and secondary industries to tertiary service industries.

Connectors

Wading through waterproof choices

22

If this is some sort of ‘physical law’ then I would expect a fall in productivity because from my practical experience it is much easier to improve productivity in primary and tertiary industries compared with the service sector.

Feature

Harness the power of the private label

As an example, when I worked as a commercial fisherman: more powerful engines would get me to the fishing ground faster; a newer echo sounder would help track shoals better; modern net designs and materials would catch more; a faster hauler would pull the catch in quicker. Add all this to the skipper’s knowledge and experience and productivity gains were doable.

Likewise, in secondary manufacturing industries. When I was responsible for the design, assembly and installation of robots, I was directly involved in helping factories improve their productivity. Basically, productivity was my job.

Now look at me, a service sector magazine editor. Don’t get me wrong, publishing productivity went through the roof over the last two decades, thanks primarily to the launch of the internet and subsequent software innovations. However, my guess is editors, like many other service sector workers have maxed out on productivity, for a while at least. Until someone builds a robot editor (which they are doing) I’m flat out. I do have hope, hope that primary and secondary industries will continue to return to the UK and boost our productivity once again. Who knows, I might even return to sea one day.

Connectors

Wading through waterproof choices When a buyer asks for a waterproof connector, it can be unclear what exactly they require. Unfortunately, as managing director of Intelliconnect, Roy Phillips, reveals, it may also be a mystery to them

The response can be overwhelming: there are splash proof, jet spray proof, rain proof, swift immersion proof, continuous immersion proof, deep water, high pressure proof, all of the above in a mated condition, all of the above in an unmated condition,

sealed internally. Are you looking for a cable plug, bulkhead jack, adapter or cable assembly? Is your application in a salt water environment? In Intelliconnect’s experience, many buyers simply didn’t realise there were so many choices. Therein lies the problem that many users and specifiers of waterproof interconnects face. They don’t know exactly what they want and often end up specifying a totally unsuitable product.

Buyers requesting a waterproof connector solution will typically be asked what they mean by waterproof, which can leave many feeling confused. ‘Well, what different types of waterproof are there?’ they ask.

Intelliconnect created a quick disconnect connector for a cochlear implant

Explore suitability In a world where, increasingly, radio frequency, microwave and electronics products are used externally, in harsh environments and in situations where fluid ingress is an issue, it is critical that the customer is clear on their requirements. Equally, the manufacturer or supplier should be expert in the different methods of ensuring that the integrity of any seal is

sufficient to the needs of the application. One area which is often overlooked is the unsuitability of certain materials in certain environments. Salt water applications, for example, can present compatibility challenges. In conjunction with supply partners, Intelliconnect has continued on page 12

therefore developed products manufactured from materials such as nickel aluminium bronze for salt water situations, as well as proprietary rubbers for sealing gaskets and O-rings. Made to measure In fact, Intelliconnect has been able to provide solutions for many diverse situations. Recently, for instance, an international manufacturer of RF implant technology approached Intelliconnect with a request for a rugged, reliable quick disconnect waterproof connector that would be suitable for use in a medical application.

The connectors were to be used as part of a cochlear implant, or surgically implanted device that enables a severely deaf person to hear again. Unfortunately, when users bathed, swam or showered, they had to remove their equipment and became deaf again, so the manufacturer wanted to create a product which could work in all environments. The main difficulty in doing this centred on the interconnect system yet within eight weeks, Intelliconnect had created a suite of connectors which were rugged enough to withstand 3,000 matings, waterproof to IP68/NEMA 6P and based on a standard RF MCX connector interface. The result was one happy customer and many thousands of happy consumers in the field with zero failures. Assess reliability Another example came from the defence market, when a manufacturer of personal location beacons approached Intelliconnect to design a total of seven connectors and adapters. The products were to be used in its latest PLB for use by Air Force aircrew when they eject into the sea. The brief was simple: the beacons had to work at a depth of 10m for four hours, in order that the pilot be located and rescued. There were some challenging issues, the main one being that, because these products are used in a life or death situation, the reliability of the interconnects had to be 100 per cent without exception. Consequently, TNC bulkhead jacks, right angle cable connectors and push pull connectors were developed to work at a depth of 60m and 100psi pressure, giving a safety factor of six times. Making cable assemblies which would work at these depths was also difficult. After many months of testing, Intelliconnect was able to produce a special crimp ferrule which could seal at the point where the connector terminates to the cable. Again, a very happy customer and safer aircrew.

Alongside safety, integrity and customer satisfaction, cost is also an important driver. Fortunately, given reasonable volume, costs for waterproof products, whether standard off the shelf or special designs, can be surprisingly competitive with non-waterproof products. www.intelliconnect.co.uk

Distributors report robust component demand across multiple industries Distribution Market Watch

Distribution revenue grew nearly 8 per cent in first quarter By James Carbone Revenue for distributors doing business in Europe increased 7.9 per cent in the first quarter, according to the International Distribution of Electronics Association (IDEA). Distribution sales in United Kingdom grew 17.9 per cent in the first quarter, while sales in France increased 5.1 per cent; Germany, 6.4 per cent; Italy, 4.2 per cent, the association said. Adam Fletcher, IDEA chairman, said revenue growth in UK was likely skewed a bit by the upcoming British exit (Brexit) from the European Union which impacted the exchange rate between the Sterling and the Euro. “We saw a change in the exchange rate take place,” he said. “So, I would suggest that with the 17 per cent growth we are seeing in the UK, about 10 per cent is actually due to the exchange rate. I don’t believe the UK has grown significantly faster than the other countries, but we are seeing

growth,” said Fletcher. Overall, European distribution should post a growth rate in the mid-single digits, said Fletcher. Some market researchers are forecasting 9-11.5 per cent growth for the semiconductors in 2017. “Some of those forecasts are a little inflated. The global electronic components market this year will grow 5-6%,” said Fletcher. Some of the revenue growth will be due to higher average selling prices for semiconductors. Still, both revenue and unit shipments for the European distribution business are increasing and prices for more components are rising, lead times are stretching and there are shortages of some parts. Healthy demand is expected to continue through the rest of the year and more lead times are expected to increase in the second half which could cause problems for buyers.

“The industrial market is growing. Military and aerospace market continues to do well,” said Adam Fletcher, chairman of the International Distribution of Electronics Association Healthy component demand Distributors report that demand is healthy across most customer segments. “The industrial market is growing. Military and aerospace market continues to do well,” said Fletcher. The Internet of Things is having a positive impact on distribution business across many customer segments as more industrial products, machines and equipment are being connected to the Internet. As a result of demand across multiple customer segments, some distributors are enjoying doubledigit growth. For instance, Mouser Electronics’ sales in Europe were up 26 per cent in June year-to-date compared to 2016, according to Mark Burr-Lonnon, senior vice president EMEA and Asia for Mouser. Mouser’s sales in Germany increased 26 per cent; France, 25 per cent; Italy, 29 per cent and United Kingdom, 13 per cent. He said the strong revenue growth was due to strong component demand, more design activity and

the growing acceptance of Mouser’s business model in Europe. In addition, there are shortages in the market and Mouser is getting calls from more buyers in need of hardto-find parts. Burr-Lonnon said component demand across all segments is robust. “There’s not any sector that’s performing badly, but some are doing better than others,” he said. He noted there was healthy demand for microprocessors and sensors. “IoT is playing a part in keeping that strong,” he said. The EV opportunity Some distributors say electric vehicles (EV) and autonomous vehicles is becoming an important, growing segment. Ralf Buehler, chief sales and marketing officer for Premier Farnell, said there is a lot of development occurring with EVs and the segment needs components and equipment such as test equipment from distributors. He said the EV segment is not just focused on automakers and their tier 1 suppliers. “There are new entrants in the segment and many of them are smaller companies” that purchase through distribution.

Same-day Shipping Mouser_DistriMarket_ST_4ads_UK_210x20_2016.indd 2

Exclusively sponsored by Mouser Electronics

He said EV offers sales opportunities for Premier Farnell and “it’s not just about the car.” He noted that EVs require an infrastructure. There is “opportunity in the charge stations” around electronic vehicles that are being designed and built by smaller OEMs, he said. Buehler added there are similar opportunities with the development of autonomous vehicles, which require a lot of electronic components for the vehicle and for the infrastructure necessary to support the vehicle. Autonomous vehicles are “not a traditional business as there are a lot of new entrants to the segment so we are supporting a large bunch of nontraditional automotive customers,” he said. Many distributors report that OEMs and EMS providers in the traditional industrial segment help to drive distribution sales in the first half of 2017. “The industrial market for factory automation, machines, instruments etc., is more robust and rebounded from an indifferent growth in 2016,” said Glyn Dennehy, president EMEA for TTI. He said the distributor’s business in Europe grew in the first quarter of 2017 compared to the

fourth quarter of 2016 as well as from the first quarter of 2016. Dennehy said business so far in the second quarter has been “buoyant,” but marginally less than the first quarter. He said while medical was not a big segment for TTI in Europe the distributor is seeing “significant new business development and projects evolving in this application segment.” TTI expects to further grow its sales in Europe by expanding its facility in Maisach-Gernmiden, Germany to better serve customers. “The expansion is well under way and the building is expected to be completed physically externally before the end of the year,” said Dennehy. TTI plans to equip and test the facility in the first quarter of 2018 and begin to move materials into the facility in the second quarter of next year. The expanded facility will help TTI enhance productivity, achieve better operating costs, add capacity in value-added services and “make the TTI European value proposition better than it already is today” and help TTI grow revenue and market share, said Dennehy.

“There’s not any sector that’s performing badly, but some are doing better than others,” said Mark Burr-Lonnon, senior vice president EMEA for Mouser

Buyers can expect tighter supply and longer lead times Buyers are likely to see tighter supply for more components in the second half of the year, resulting in longer lead times, higher prices and shortages of some parts. Distributors report that lead times began stretching in the first half and supply could become more constrained in the third quarter if demand picks up significantly. Shortages are “across the board including capacitors, some resistors, and semiconductors,” said Mark Burr-Lonnon, senior vice president Europe Middle East and Asia for Mouser Electronics. “No one likes to use the word allocation, but there is allocation for a number of parts. When lead times go out to 40 weeks, parts are on allocation,” he said. Adam Fletcher, chairman of the International Distribution of Electronics Association, said he is concerned that buyers “are not increasing their orders to keep them in line with the increases in manufacturing lead times.” Until recently, component supply and demand had been in balance for a long time and many buyers have not had to deal with long lead times and shortages. “I think it’s a generational thing. I think there’s a generation of people purchasing today who are used to four-week lead times,” said Fletcher. “They have never seen allocation. They have never seen lead times extend.” If the electronics component market grows 6-7% then there will be shortages and more lead times will extend. He noted that some parts that typically have four-week lead times have jumped to six- to eight-weeks. On average today, the lead time for 98 per cent of components is 8-10 weeks I think this will extend to the end of the year to the 10 to 12-week range,” said Fletcher. “We will see an increasing number of products maybe 2 per cent having extended lead times of 16 weeks plus.” he said. By the end of the year, the number of parts with 16-week lead times will double, according to Fletcher As a result, buyers in Europe “need to start increasing their order cover,” he said.

What's New

Making medical supplies more flexible No more losing screws Elesa’s new GN 653.2 retained screws with knurled grip knob are designed to provide an elegant solution to problems associated with mounting and demounting brackets, components and instruments. The new screws can be removed rapidly, without the risk of losing the clamping knob in the process. This is a common requirement in medical industries and for disability equipment, where the large, knurled knob supports ease of use. Available in black oxide steel or matt finish stainless, the GN 653.2 series clamps two items together by screwing through the component, through a relief section and into the threaded body. The underneath of the head then clamps onto the face of the component. If the assembly is unscrewed, the knob can’t fall out and is retained for reassembly at a later stage. www.elesa.com

Defence applications such as smart munitions depend on ultra-low jitter frequency control. With its latest clock oscillators, IQD presents a solution - one that also boasts robust environmental performance Where ultra-low jitter is a prerequisite, IQD provides a solution; the company’s new STXO series of surface mount clock oscillators boasts an ultra-low integrated RMS phase jitter of 256fs at 2.5V and RMS period jitter of 1.4ps over 10,000 cycles. With a phase noise level of -138dBc/Hz at 1kHz and -163dBc/Hz at the noise floor, this ensures the new series is ideal for defence and aerospace applications such as smart munitions, guidance and navigation and communication systems. With the STXO designed around a hermetically sealed high-shock crystal and a CMOS compatible integrated circuit, the oscillator also promises good environmental performance. The STXO is able, for example, to survive shock levels of up to 20,000G and vibration levels of 20G at 10 to 2,000Hz swept sine, in accordance with MIL-STD202G. Temperature compensation Housed in an industry standard 3.2 by 2.5mm four-pad ceramic package with a metal lid, the new

STXO series uses minor temperature compensation to achieve tight frequency stability. It is said to achieve stability of ±10ppm over a -40 to 85°C operating temperature and ±20ppm over the full military operating temperature range of -55 to 125°C.

Harting has developed a new compressed air module designed to meet the increased demands on pneumatic interfaces. The new Han Pneumatic Module Metal boasts durable metal contacts that can be plugged and unplugged at least 10,000 times. According to Harting, the new interface operates at a high maximum pressure. Instead of the previous upper limit of eight bars for the Han Pneumatic module with plastic contacts, metal module contacts can now withstand permanent pressures of up to 10 bars. This means the new module covers the entire low pressure range, extending the possible applications for pluggable compressed air systems. Now users can exploit the benefits of compressed air technology in frequently converted production facilities to supply drive units, control units, brakes, holding and unloading units. Thanks to the connector’s design, which minimises contact pressure loss, there are also new combination possibilities for pneumatics in high mating cycle modular connectors. Electrical contacts can now be combined with fibre-optic contacts and compressed air in HMC connectors, saving build space and assembly time. www.harting.co.uk

Mix and match power and signal contacts Lane Electronics has introduced a rack and panel connector system that can be configured as a power or signal connector, or as a combination of the two, in a variety of contact configurations. This enables users to develop a tailored connector solution in a single housing measuring 14.6mm in height. The Positronic Scorpion series is available in several formats including blind mate, float mount, panel mount and a cable connector option with an integral locking system. Termination options include solder PCB mount, crimp and press-fit. Lane Electronics can also supply a selection of accessories. In total, there are seven power contact options with continuous current ratings from 16 to 80A per contact. Contacts are available in sizes 8, 12, 16, 18, 22 as well as 0.6mm hyperboloid. Sequential mating can be used to restrict the number of connections that go ‘live’ at the same time. www.fclane.com

Mini fuse handles high currents Distributor, Rutronik, presents a newcomer to the Siba surface mount miniature fuse family: the SMD 160020. Designed for currents of up to 20A at 250V, the new fuse measures just 20mm in length. It is claimed to break short circuit currents of up to 1,500A reliably. Overall, the Siba SMD miniature range is designed to combine high rated currents and high switching capacities in compact designs. Compared to traditional cylindrical fuses, they are said to be easier to install and come ready for automated assembly. www.rutronik24.com

Mounting made simple OKW’s Synergy enclosures can now be wall mounted using a concealed suspension element compatible with both the circular R120 and 140 variants of the enclosure. The hidden fixings are said to be even more discrete than Synergy’s existing wall suspension element, which can be installed with only one screw. The new wall suspension element’s adapter is attached to the housing using customised doublesided foil on a foam rubber carrier. This adapter fits into a housing which is either screwed to the wall or attached using adhesive foils. A locking pin system provides removal protection. Anodised aluminium enclosures in the Synergy range are available in four shapes: square, rectangular, circular and oval. There are 36 sizes available and enclosures can be specified with or without battery compartments for 1.5V AA cells. Plastic components are moulded from ASA+PC-FR for strength and UV stability, with parts supplied in black RAL 9005 as standard. www.okw.co.uk August 2017 19

Logistics

Unlock cost savings with streamlined logistics Unwilling to compromise on quality or service, many EMS companies are turning to logistics to deliver cost savings, says sales director of Redhead International, Rob Cockroft

Tailor-made transport In a bid to reduce costs, some component manufacturers are moving production away from the UK, often to Eastern Europe, the Baltic States and North Africa. While this may facilitate savings on labour and production expenditure, it also exacerbates the question of how best to transport components and finished products safely and on time. The benefits of choosing a logistics partner with the scope and flexibility to reach some of the far-flung corners of the continent are clear. The ideal provider will have sufficient experience and reach to execute a smooth and reliable service, yet remain cost-effective and flexible. This is particularly important when businesses are looking to logistics as a means to reducing costs with minimum impact on product quality. Go with the flow Effective planning and flexibility are key to ensuring that both materials and finished products are delivered in a timely manner and that logistics companies can react quickly to changes in demand and in the market as a whole. As product lifecycles become increasingly short, demand can fluctuate significantly.

While moving smaller consignments is not a new concept, technological advances such as track and trace, along with defined transit times, have increased visibility and can help to create strong and reliable networks. This makes smaller batch deliveries an ideal option for low volume producers or those looking to cut back on warehouse space. The benefits of a tailored logistics solution are particularly appealing to electronics manufacturing services companies. Quick, efficient and dependable delivery at a cost-effective price and in the shortest possible timescale allows them to reduce costs without compromising on quality or service. Reaching across Europe In a move set to meet this demand, Bradford-based Redhead International has recently undertaken a reverse integration scheme with DB Schenker’s UK land division, ultimately enhancing its reach across Europe, Scandinavia and North Africa. DB Schenker acquired a 75 per cent stake in Redhead early in 2016, with the Redhead team remaining in place and able to tap into the German company’s considerable resources. This includes access to some 21,000 land staff, operating from 430 depots, 15,000 collection and delivery vehicles, 9,000 tractor units and more than 19,000 trailers. In addition, Redhead can now utilise DB Schenker’s established routes across Europe. This enables the

company to offer an extended network while still offering a reliable, affordable and flexible solution. Daily departures to more than 20 countries support customers in the electronics sector as they move components between production sites or from factories and customers swiftly and reliably. This is crucial where the delivery of component batches is urgent or where just-in-time practices are in operation that reduce customer costs by enabling them to hold smaller inventories. redhead-int.com

The benefits of a tailored logistics solution are particularly appealing to electronics manufacturing services companies

The increasing globalisation of the electronics industry, combined with evershortening product lifecycles, is having a major impact on how electronics are transported. Consequently, choosing the right logistics partner is key to successfully addressing these challenges.

Effective planning and flexibility are key to getting both materials and finished products delivered

Harness the power of the private label

As private label ranges increase in popularity, RS Components’ head of Northern Europe and emerging markets for RS Pro, Guy Dann, wonders whether buyers are getting the most from this approach Private label goods have gathered pace in a variety of sectors, most notably the fast-moving consumer goods arena. Likewise, the industrial space has also seen the rapid emergence of private label products. There are a variety of benefits to choosing private label, with value no longer measured on price alone. So, what should buyers prioritise when looking to switch to private label products? Careful selection Private label products are most successful when they are within product ranges where innovation is limited or not required for the project. The goal here is to look for a product at a cheaper price point, which offers an alternative to big brand prices, but without compromising on quality. Of course, brands survive because of their reputation for providing quality. They can charge more for the efficacy of their products and the peace of mind of dealing with a reputable company. Big brands need to recoup their investment in innovation from their entire range of products, however, and this can often drive prices up. Private label ranges offer a viable alternative, but must demonstrate the same level of quality to compete with the big brands, at a price that’s attractive enough to encourage a switch. Finding a supplier that can offer a range of standardised, quality products at a lower price point is therefore key to savings.

Internet opportunities With the growth of the internet, buyers have access to so much choice, but this can present both opportunities and pitfalls. It can be difficult to understand the quality versus price formula. Buyers should also be wary of the pitfalls associated with the unbranded grey market, where the evidence of a product having been tested, audited and inspected is often unavailable. Worse, buying from an unknown supplier could result in counterfeit products being bought, thus providing a false economy when the product fails.

and payment terms from multiple suppliers. Standardising products and processes drives efficiencies, creating savings. In fact, RS Components conducted some independently verified research that highlighted the cost of MRO procurement as being twice that of product cost. This makes it an element worth considering.

Buyers should look to work with a supplier that can show proof of adequate product testing, a commitment to quality and performance and compliance with industry standards. A tangible stamp of quality and a guarantee should be high on the agenda. These elements, married with a price point which is even just marginally lower than the big brands, should be enough.

uk.rs-online.com

MRO savings For buyers in maintenance, repair and operations, further savings can be generated through ease of ordering. Working with a supplier that has clear ordering and product referencing processes, such as including model numbers and names on the product, makes buying repeat products straightforward. Buying from a single supplier also reduces the administrative downtime of handling varying invoicing

22 August 2017 • www.electronics-sourcing.co.uk

Ultimately, the opportunities to save money are evident, and so long as buyers don’t lose sight of the pillars of value, where quality and performance meet, they can realise these cost savings without having to compromise.

Buyers’ Guide

Millennial buyers expect more

We all appreciate rapid ordering and delivery, but younger buyers demand more from suppliers with minimal patience online, says technical materials specialist, Materials Direct In industry, as in our personal lives, we want quick, easy, selection and rapid delivery. Websites that offer products from multiple suppliers can save search time, while intuitive online interfaces speed selection and delivery. Amazon Prime is a notable example, but the same philosophies apply in niche areas such as the electronics and lighting sectors.

the need for tooling. The materials supplied are used widely in electronics assemblies, especially in the rapid growth LED lighting sector, where they perform functions including electrical insulation, thermal interfacing, adhesion of parts and assemblies, light diffusion and reflection and electromagnetic interference shielding.

Unsurprisingly, younger age groups are the most demanding in terms of online patience. One study indicates that the youngest working age groups have an attention span of less than ten seconds. This means pages need to load quickly and be clear, concise and logical, while site maps need to be intuitive. It also means online transactions must be slick, with no barriers that could cause users to give up and go elsewhere.

A need for speed Three key demands are synonymous with new product design in the electronics sector: speed, ease of use, and the need to minimise costs. Unfortunately, these can often be conflicting wishes. Tooling and waiting for custom parts in the prototype phases of a project can conflict with the need for speed and keeping costs under control. E-mech designers therefore welcome a process whereby all these issues are addressed effectively.

Materials Direct aims to offer a high-speed, easy-to-use model that lifts many ideas from business to consumer sites. It provides custom, precision cut parts, without

Materials Direct aims to do just that, by providing parts that are the same as volume production parts in

appearance, function and performance. The goals is to provide consistent quality and repeatability from piece-to-piece, but without the investment in time and money for tooling. This naturally appeals to millennial buyers who don’t want to be hampered by ‘old school’ problems such as waiting for tooling. Delays here can slow the progress of a project to production where it starts to repay initial R&D investments. For this reason, millennials often welcome the kind of self-service initiatives that are enabled via the internet. Cut trawl time Visiting multiple supplier sites for technical sheet materials takes time; there are many companies in the sector and there is overlap between what types of end applications they can support. Consolidating their offerings in a single location therefore has big benefits. With Materials Direct using materials from suppliers such as 3M, Du Pont and Laird, this consolidation, combined

with a rapid service, mirrors successful examples from the B2C world. To achieve these benefits, Materials Direct’s user interface has been broken down into logical steps that can all be completed online without the need for supplier intervention. First, users obtain a quote by entering the external dimensions of the part required, selecting a material, entering a quantity and choosing the desired delivery date. A PDF or CAD file of the part is uploaded and site software confirms all the details. Once the user has placed their order and made payment, parts are manufactured and goods can be despatched in as little as 24-hours. www.materialsdirect247.com Time to trawl several sites is a luxury buyers don’t generally have

Semiconductor market posts strong growth in Europe Integrated circuit sales will increase about 8 per cent in 2017 driven in large part by the auto industry By James Carbone

Semiconductor Market Watch

The European integrated circuit (IC) market will increase 8.3 per cent to $29.9 billion in 2017, but will grow at a slower rate than the overall global IC market, according to researcher IC Insights. The worldwide integrated circuit market will increase 15.5 per cent in 2017 to $343.7 billion, the research firm said. The growth rate for European IC market will also lag behind the overall global lC market through 2020. IC sales revenue in Europe will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 3.4 per cent from 2016 through 2020 when sales will total $31.5 billion, according to IC insights. The global lC market will post a 6.4 per cent CAGR as sales rise to $381.7 billion in 2020, the researcher said. Brian Matas, vice president of market research for IC Insights said one reason for the slower growth for the European IC industry is that gross domestic product (GDP) will be slower in Europe than global GDP growth. In 2017, GDP in Europe will increase 1.5 per cent, while global GDP will rise 2.6 per cent, Matas said.

By The Numbers

In addition, DRAM prices increased significantly in 2017 which is boosting overall IC revenue globally. However, DRAM sales in Europe are not that significant because most DRAM is used in computers and smart phones, most of which tend to be manufactured in Asia. As a result, “we forecast that the European integrated circuit market to be a little softer than the total IC market,” said Matas. While IC sales growth in Europe may lag global overall growth, some European chipmakers are posting healthy gains so far in 2017 and are optimistic that sales will increase for the rest of the year. For instance, Infineon, headquartered in Neubiberg, Germany, reported that its sales increased 7 per percent in the first quarter compared to the first quarter of 2016 and expects its sales to rise 8-11 per cent in the second quarter. “The favourable market development we saw in the first quarter of the fiscal year has continued into the second threemonth period. Current order

situation gives us good reason for optimism and we have raised our forecast for the full year,” said Dr. Reinhard Ploss, CEO of Infineon. STMicroelectronics, based in Geneva, said its first-quarter sales increased nearly 13 per cent compared to the first quarter of 2016. It forecasts that it’s second quarter revenue would increase 5 per cent over the first quarter. Discretes’ sales lag Growth of the European discrete semiconductors market will also lag the worldwide discrete chip market. Discretes’ global revenue will grow about 3.9 per cent per year from 2016 to 2020 as sales increase from $22.1 billion to $26 billion according to IC Insights. However, the European discretes market will have a CAGR of just 2.4 per cent through the period. However, while the growth rate of the European IC market will trail the worldwide market, the growth rate for ICs used in automotive applications will be robust. “In Europe, the focus has always been on automotive and industrial from an IC point of view,” said Len

Jelinek, senior director semiconductor manufacturing for researcher IHS Markit. “I think you can arguably say microcontrollers, sensors, and things that are supporting the auto industry are key drivers” of the IC industry in Europe, he said. “Automotive has had an impact in the last couple of quarters” on the overall IC industry in Europe, he said. Matas said the automotive segment “is certainly doing much better in Europe” than other segments. It is probably the strongest growing segment of the European IC market,” said Matas. Automotive ICs in Europe will have a CAGR of 9 per cent from 2016 through 2020. In fact, automotive is the second biggest segment for integrated circuits in Europe in 2017. About $8.4 billion of ICs will be purchased by automakers and their suppliers and automotive will account for about 28.1 percent of the total European IC market. The computer segment accounts for 30 per cent. “In Europe, there has always been a pretty strong presence of

Such innovation results in new safety, comfort, entertainment and information systems in vehicles resulting in more electronics content and more semiconductor usage in vehicles. Electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids will further drive the integrated circuit market in Europe in the coming years. EV and hybrids use more ICs than conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. Matas said that the average petrol fuel vehicle has about $400 of semiconductors. However, a hybrid vehicle has between $500 and $600 chips and an electric vehicle has about $900 of integrated circuits. While EVs and hybrids currently represent a small percentage of overall vehicles, that percentage will grow as the driving range of hybrids and ECs increases and the price of the vehicles declines. Good-bye to internal combustion Auto manufacturer Volvo recently announced that by 2020, the company will not build cars that just have internal combustion engines. The carmaker said it will manufacture hybrids and EVs only. In addition, France said it will end the sales of gasoline and diesel-powered cars by 2040. As a result, more EVs and hybrids will be sold which will result

While the automotive segment overall accounts for only about 9 per cent of the global integrated circuit market, that percentage could increase as more EVs are built. Automotive will become a more significant segment for chipmakers especially for semiconductor companies that build microcontrollers, analog chips, power management ICs and sensors, which are widely used in all vehicles. “Sensors are a big piece. More sensors are being added to cars,” said Matas. However, to process the information gathered by sensors “in real-time or nearly real-time, microcontrollers are needed,” he said. “Electric vehicles would use more sensors than a gas-powered vehicle. A lot of it has to do with power management. I think there’s more sensors monitoring the whole electric vehicle, including some of the internal operation such as generation of electricity.” Of course, automotive is not the only customer segment driving ICs sales in Europe. Medical is also a driver. “Medical will be a growth segment for the next several years,” said Matas. There are more home health care medical products that use electronics being developed and there’s strong demand for patient monitoring and other diagnostic and other equipment used in hospitals. In addition, the post-World War II baby boom generation is now elderly so demand for healthcare is increasing. Internet of things will also help drive integrated circuit growth in Europe. “IoT growth is similar in Europe as it is and other region in terms of driving ICs sales,” said Matas. “Everyone is interested in IOT and trying to be innovative. “But it is a slow process, but Europe is right there.”

Trickle down technology He noted that Europe is home to the top three luxury carmakers that “often want to push the envelope in terms of technology, which trickles down into some of their other brands and to other brands around the world.” Mercedes, BMW and Audi have always the top car manufacturers in innovation with their highestend vehicles, said Matas.

Eliminating ‘no-bids’ from the BoM When a capacitor or resistor is obsolete or on allocation, it’s easy for a distributor not to bid, but it leaves buyers with big gaps. Debbie Rowland explains how Charcroft tackles the problem

Distribution can be measured on many metrics. Buyers can look at statistics for on-time delivery, quality and cost, but perhaps there is an even more important metric that buyers should consider: the number of parts for which a distributor provides no-bid at all on a quotation. Of course, there can be valid reasons why a distributor would no-bid, such as not being franchised by the manufacturer of a proprietary part, or the part falling outside of its available linecard. But the fact that a capacitor or resistor is

Charcroft’s Debbie Rowland with an alternative to an obsolete multilayer ceramic capacitor

obsolete or on allocation should not be a valid reason for a no-bid. No-bidding is certainly the easiest option for a distributor, especially for relatively lowvalue parts such as capacitors or resistors, but it is far from easy for the buyer. It means that the buyer must resend the quotation to other suppliers and complete the bill of materials from multiple sources, which in turn increases the accounting overheads. This process may take days and still not lead to the buyer being able to achieve on-time delivery. ES 125x85 August Issue.qxp_Layout 1 14/07/2017 10:07 Page 1

An obsolete passive component can have many alternatives

Finding alternatives There is another approach that distributors could use, but it requires time, knowledge and effort. At Charcroft, for example, it is a matter of policy to automatically check for alternatives, not only for obsolete passives, but also for parts which are on long lead-times. This approach could become increasingly important as the industry begins to see allocation on some capacitors and resistors. For distributors, the first step in avoiding a no-bid is to identify the part. If the BoM includes a part number, manufacturer name and a full product description, this can be fairly straightforward. Sometimes, there is only a part number, which means that the distributor will need to check ordering guides on legacy datasheets to confirm the product description. Once the part has been identified, the next step is to translate the product description into a part number from a different manufacturer. For example, an obsolete Syfer 8123Z0500104KX multilayer ceramic capacitor can be directly replaced by a Charcroft VK20BY104KA or Kemet C052T104K5X5Cx as well as by mil-spec part numbers. All of these

alternatives are currently in production and may provide a viable solution. Asking questions Unfortunately, not all substitutions are quite as simple and it is then that the real work begins for those distributors with the expertise to undertake it. The key is to understand every detail of the specific application and find any area of flexibility. Perhaps a relaxation of tolerance from one to five per cent would be acceptable? Or maybe the parts only really need to be specified for a maximum operating temperature of 85 rather than 125°C. In other applications, it may be possible to use a different voltage, or even a totally different type of capacitor, which can match the performance characteristics of the original part. While these questions will typically need input from engineering colleagues, they do provide the basis for finding alternatives. Providing answers also means that buyers avoid the frustrating and timeconsuming process of filling in the gaps when distributors go for the easy option of not bidding on a difficult part.

Products Stretch, wrap and bend to suppress radiated emissions Molex has launched a new generation of electromagnetic interference noise absorption sheets designed to wrap around cable and other high frequency devices. The pliable composite sheets feature magnetic and conductive properties that provide EMI noise absorption up to 40GHz. HOZOX HF2 sheets target the growing number of high frequency electronics applications that require noise absorption. They are said to effectively attenuate broadband radiated EMI for optimal performance of cables and devices. Designed to provide EMI noise reduction across a wide frequency band, the sheets comprise a magnetic filler that enables suppression of low frequency electromagnetic energy, while a conductive filler suppresses high frequency electromagnetic energy. In order to conform, stretch and wrap around cables and high frequency equipment, the sheets utilise a silicone-based material. This ensures they are suitable for a range of applications, including aerospace equipment. www.molex.com

Microphone enhances infrasound measurements Following collaboration with aerospace industry partners, including the Japanese Space Exploration Agency or JAXA, GRAS Sound and Vibration has developed the 47AC, a new microphone set designed specifically for infrasound measurements. Increased awareness about infrasound has resulted in new measurement challenges from the aerospace industry for accurate monitoring of environmental noise. The main requirement is to measure at extremely low frequencies. In response, GRAS worked with a number of industry partners to develop its new 47AC microphone set. This 1/2in infrasound microphone set is a constant current power free-field instrument, designed to facilitate the measurement of frequencies as low as 0.09Hz. It was developed following research with JAXA to reduce the impact of the sonic boom generated by supersonic aircraft. Now available as a standard product, the 47AC can also be used for infrasound monitoring applications within a variety of industries including measurement of wind turbine noise and university research. www.gras.co.uk

Communication underpins supply chain efficiency Improving efficiency in the supply chain requires teamwork. That’s why, once again, electronics manufacturing services provider, Dynamic EMS, has brought its distribution partners together for a day of discussion and idea sharing When Dynamic EMS hosted a supplier day at its manufacturing headquarters in Scotland this year, the event brought together executives from Dynamic EMS and the company's main distribution partners. Their aim: to discuss issues in the industry and improve overall supply chain efficiency. To improve visibility across the supply chain, broadline, catalogue and specialist distributors were all invited, along with service providers and suppliers of mechanical products. Companies attending included Digi-Key, Avnet Abacus, Arrow Electronics, Rutronik, Farnell element14, Future Electronics, Rebound Electronics and America II Europe. Sharing best practice Following an introduction from Dynamic EMS managing director, John Dignan, which emphasised the company’s transparent culture, the event was led by supply chain manager, Paul Freeman. Discussion focused on the opportunities and issues that could affect business

in the near to midterm, covering subjects such as the company’s growth plans, rising prices, challenges to the supply chain from Brexit, currency fluctuations, and manufacturers' decreasing inventory levels which could lead to distributors reintroducing allocation. Paul also looked at how the supply chain was changing and iterated that both Dynamic EMS and its partners needed to adapt together by sharing best practices and forming closer relationships. Dynamic EMS financial director, John Watt, explained: “Companies like us face increasing competition, expanding markets, and rising customer expectation. This increases pressure to lower total costs in the entire supply chain, shorten throughput times and drastically reduce inventories. Procurement of components makes up the biggest part of our spend, with the suppliers who attended making up around 85 per cent of the company’s procurement spend. By sharing ideas, we can identify savings,

To ensure visibility of the whole supply chain, broadline, catalogue and specialist distributors were all invited

which are required to ensure optimal cash flow.” Farnell element14’s CEM business manager, Bill Platt, added: “Hidden costs affect procurement by taking up too much staff time. At the last supplier day, I suggested Dynamic EMS switch from paper invoicing to our e-invoicing portal. This allows Dynamic EMS to quickly see and compare old orders and past spending.” John Dignan concluded: “The supplier day provides a forum for frank discussion between ourselves and our supply chain partners, allowing us to identify mutual savings and work together more effectively. Our focus on long-term customer relationships gives us a view of the whole product design and manufacturing process, which is also of great value to our suppliers. Every supplier day so far has provided a variety of ideas, which can be implemented. Feedback so far suggests this year is no different.” www.dynamic-ems.com

Cut RF signal levels with ease

Tough can be elegant Switches for harsh outdoor applications can be exposed to extreme influences: including weather, fluctuations in temperature, fine dust and even vandalism. With its Metal Line range, Schurter aims to prove that robust functionality and reliability are compatible with aesthetics and elegance.

When radio frequency signal levels need reducing, Telegärtner claims its SMA, BNC, TNC, N, R-SMA and R-TNC series RF attenuators are the ideal choice. Designed for use up to 6GHz, these attenuators guarantee a precise signal attenuation of three, six, 10 or 20dB, depending on the type used.

Applications will typically be in the field of test and measurement, as well as for antenna lines, where the emission must be set at defined levels, or for mobile communications and wireless local area networks. Attenuation values and mating face designs are available on request.

Telegärtner’s RF attenuators guarantee a precise signal attenuation

This is vital because, after all, switches are meant to be touched. Our fingers are highly sensitive and can immediately sense the surface texture of a switch. What's more, the aesthetic demands placed on manufacturers of input systems are constantly increasing. Schurter's Metal Line range of switches uses various technologies designed to protect against destructive damage in extreme environments. The

switches meet mechanical shock requirements up to IK07 according to DIN EN 50102. They are designed for a lifetime of up to 20 million activations and can be used in harsh industrial environments, as well as in applications with high user interface. All Metal Line switches also boast a highquality metal housing making them robust and durable for tactically and visually demanding applications. www.schurter.com
