Elkhart County under travel advisory, exercise caution during morning commute ELKHART (February 8, 2018) – Due to heavy snow that is anticipated to fall overnight and

continue throughout the day Friday, Elkhart County is currently under a travel advisory.

The City of Elkhart is encouraging residents to exercise caution during the Friday morning commute. The Elkhart Street Department will focus on clearing main thoroughfares of snow and ice before moving to secondary and residential streets. Mayor Tim Neese is urging drivers to heed the following winter driving tips: 1. Give yourself plenty of travel time. 2. Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you. 3. Remember that speed limits are designed for ideal road conditions; snow and ice covered roads will require you to use reduced speed. 4. When accelerating or decelerating, do so slowly. This will help prevent the spinning and skidding of tires. 5. When stopped at an intersection, make sure the drivers around you have completely stopped before you precede. 6. Use your headlights when traveling in snowy conditions. 7. Always wear your seatbelt. 8. Refrain from using cellular devices while driving. Caution should also be used when shoveling driveways and sidewalks to avoid overexertion. The city continues to monitor road conditions and will provide updates as needed or as conditions change. These updates will be posted on the city’s website at www.elkhartindiana.org. -30-
