Staying on top of Dental Health as we Age Dental health can make a big difference in our overall health. While dental health is important even before we begin getting teeth, with age, we experience physiological and condition-related dental health changes. These changes make it necessary to give some extra attention to our dental hygiene. At 65 and over, such changes may include dry mouth, root or coronal decay, gum disease, decreased sense of taste, and/or increased sensitivity to anesthetics and analgesics. To minimize challenges with changes, it’s important seniors stay on top of their dental health. Note: Each individual should follow the advice of their medical professionals and speak with them before making changes to diet, exercise, or supplements. This post is for informational use only and should not be considered medical advice.

Ways to stay on top of dental health:

“There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer.” -Ansel Adams

Some Oral Hygiene “Did You Know’s”:

For dry mouth, drinking or sipping water throughout the day, and limiting alcohol and high-sugar/high-caffeine beverages can help. Other aids may include oral moisturizers, sugar-free gum or lozenges to stimulate saliva production, using a humidifier to keep air moist, or speaking to a medical professional about changing a medication or dosage. For keeping gums healthy, teeth should be brushed twice daily with fluoride toothpaste. Flossing should be done daily to remove plaque from between teeth. Visit the dentist regularly. To prevent decay, practice good oral hygiene.: Use a rotating toothbrush. Use topical fluoride such as daily mouth rinses, high fluoride toothpaste, or regular fluoride varnish application. If one has dentures, they need to be cleaned each day with denture cleaner. Also, follow a healthy diet.

The numbers of older adults who retain their natural teeth is increasing. Dry mouth affects 30% of adults over 65, primarily due to prescription medications. It is more likely to occur in those who take over four daily. Certain conditions, such as Diabetes, Alzheimer’s, or Parkinson’s can also cause dry mouth. A main reason gum disease is so widespread among older adults is that it’s often painless until it reaches an advanced stage, at which point symptoms can include sore, bleeding gums; chewing issues; recessed gums; or tooth loss. Acidic foods can erode enamel., and crunchy foods like chips or crackers can lead to build up between teeth. For dental health, turn to low-sugar dairy, lean proteins, less acidic fruits and vegetables, nuts, and high-fiber foods. Dental procedure financing can be stressful to think about. Resident of the Month! Sandy

Safe Sunscreen Application Tips Per the American Cancer Society, choose a sunscreen that is “broad spectrum” so it protects from UVA and UVB rays. Choose SPF 30 or higher. Most sunscreens last 2-3 years so check the expiration before using. Heat can affect expiration. Mixing the bottle before using is recommended. Apply sunscreen before makeup or insect repellant. To cover arms, legs, neck, and face of the average adult, about 1 oz (a shot glass worth) should be used and reapplied at least every two hours. Remember to cover lips, ears, hands, scalp, hair part, and nose bridge. A hat is recommended.

Sandy was born on August 7th, 1947 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. She was raised on a large dairy farm where she would pull corn, mow hay, and till soil. Her father taught her how to chop trees down. Sandy has two brothers and two sisters. Sandy attended Cadott High School, got good grades and never got in trouble. After graduating high school, she attended Seattle University for two semesters. She then transferred to Chemeketa Community College where she received her Associates degree in Nursing. Sandy went on to work as a nurse at Salem Memorial Hospital for 31 years! She took care of patients after they got out of surgery. She loved being able to help others and says it was a fast paced job. Sandy says if she could do anything in the world, she would go back to being a nurse. Sandy enjoys going out for walks on sunny days. She loves arts & crafts, quilting, and going antiquing. Sandy loves all types of animals, especially dogs and horses. She owned a horse named Star for 17 years! Her favorite dog breeds are Collies, Shelties, and German Shepherds.
