Être bilingue, c’est gagnant! by ANGELA MANCINI

Our promotional and mar keting initiatives are getting recognized. When the English Montreal School Board was established in 1998, the enrolment in our youth sector was just more than 25,000. As it continued to grow, the then Parti Québecois government implemented new measures to further tighten the language restrictions. As a result of that, simple demographics and a lower birth rate saw our student population begin to drop signi ficantly to the point that it fell below 20,000 last year. Conversely, our Adult Education and Vocational Services (AEVS) sector went from some 12,000 students upon our inception to almost 25,000. Last fall, though, we received some encouraging news as our enrolment numbers for youth came in at 19,345 students. This was a drop of only 24 from the previous year. That is a far cry from the several hundred we had been losing. So, with more than 44,000 students in total, we are indeed the largest English public school board in Quebec. It is very important to showcase what we do. Last year we em -

barked upon the most ambitious branding exercise in our history under the theme “Être bilingue, c’est gagnant! The campaign included billboards, brochures, newspaper advertisements, shopping bags and television commercials. The objective was to emphasize the excellent bilingual education provided to students, using a catchy unilingual French slogan. We worked with our French consultants, beginning the process with over 30 potential slogans and finally coming up with this one. By highlighting our excellence in French instruction, we want to persuade more parents to choose the EMSB for their children. I am pleased to report that at the annual Spring Conference of the Quebec English School Boards Association last May in Bromont, EMSB Communi cations and Marketing Specialist Mike Cohen was presented with an Award of Excellence in Education in the Public School Promotion category, by a panel of external judges for our “Être bilingue, c’est gagnant!” campaign. We have decided to continue to focus on that theme this year as well as promoting our wonderful

success rate, the highest among any public school board in Quebec. Every day we hear of something special going on in our schools and centres and thanks to the local media and our own platforms we get the word out. Social media remains an im portant vehicle for us at the central board level and at our schools and centres. Last year at this time

TV project will be expanding. There are so many great things occurring at the EMSB and we take pride in disseminating all of this information.

EMSB ADDS MORE STEAM SCHOOLS The EMSB has announced the expansion of its very successful STEAM initiative for the 2017-2018 academic year. “STEAM” stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. It represents a multi-disciplinary initiative that promotes creativity and high levels of student engagement, as they perform a series of group projects that not only involve five school subject domains, but also makes them more relevant, creative, discovery-based and interesting for students. STEAM is subject-specific learning. It aims to foster inquiring minds, logical reasoning, and collaboration skills. Joining pilot project schools General Vanier in St. Léonard and Pierre Elliott Trudeau in Rosemount will be 10 elementary schools Elizabeth Ballantyne in Montreal West, Pierre de Coubertin and Honoré-Mercier in St. Léonard, Coronation in Côte des Neiges; Westmount Park; Carlyle in TMR; Gardenview in St. Laurent; Michelangelo in RDP; Dalkeith in Anjou; Bancroft in the Plateau; and two high schools: John Paul I in St. Léonard and James Lyng in St. Henri.

ST. MONICA SAYS “NO” TO BULLYING

HONOURING OUR TEACHERS

Students take a stand.

Students at St. Monica Elementary School in N.D.G. have focused on several fun and educational activities on themes related to bullying, kindness and diversity. Teachers lead classroom activities that teach skills on how to deal with bullying and how to create a positive environment where everyone feels safe, accepted and valued. Parents also had the chance to take part in a workshop held by Prevention NDG on how to communicate and deal with issues surrounding bullying. Capping off the theme of anti-bullying was a visit from the Montreal Alouettes’ Kyries Hebert, who spoke about how he overcame many obstacles in his life to get to where he is today.

Left to right: Derick Fage, Nancy Latulippe, EMSB Director General Ann Marie Matheson, Michael Creamer, Stuart Chappell, Tyffany Coryn, Catherine Verdon Diamond and some students.

To mark National Teachers’ Day last May, the EMSB presented special awards from P.F. Chang’s and La Cage Brasserie Sportive. The ceremony took place at Roslyn Elementary School and was co-sponsored by City’s Breakfast Television. Tyffany Coryn, the hospitality manager at

PF Chang’s Montreal, presented $100 gift cards to Roslyn kindergarten teacher Nancy Latulippe, John F. Kennnedy Adult Education Centre in St. Michel English teacher Stuart Chappell and a $100

gift card to La Cage to Hampstead Elementary School Physical Education and Health teacher Michael Creamer. BT Montreal’s Derick Fage and Catherine Verdon Diamond were guest emcees.

WAGAR ADULT CENTRE The EMSB is reaching back into its past with the announcement that the Marymount Adult Education Centre in Côte Saint-Luc has been renamed the Wagar Adult Education Centre. Wagar High School occupied the Parkhaven Avenue building from 1963 until its closure in 2005. The Marymount Adult Education Centre, which previously shared the premises of the Marymount Academy International on Côte SaintLuc Road in NDG, relocated to the building in September 2005. The facility also serves as the home of the CARE Centre for adults with disabilities and John Grant High School for special needs students.

AMBASSADORS OF CHANGE ILLUSTRATION: PRAWNY, ISTOCK

About 45 students from the EMSB travelled to Ottawa on May 8 to remember those who perished during the Holocaust, as well as to increase their awareness of the values associated with diversity, justice and social inclusiveness at two events: the annual Ambassadors of Change Symposium and the National Holocaust Remembrance Day Ceremony. The students – along with school staff and spiritual community animators (SCA) – represented John Grant High School in Côte Saint-Luc, Outreach Alternative High School in NDG, Programme Mile End Alternative High School in Côte des Neiges, and LaurenHill Academy in St. Laurent. Participants gather together after a memorable day in Ottawa.

DIRECTOR GENERAL’S MESSAGE

An EMSB teacher becomes a Member of Parliament

ANN MARIE MATHESON At the English Montreal School Board we are proud of all our teachers who do such a fabulous job. In the last school year, one teacher did something quite unique. In what can only be described as an astonishing victory, Rosemount High School teacher Emmanuella Lambropoulos, 26, captured the Liberal Party nomination for the federal riding of Saint-Laurent-Cartierville. Ms. Lambropoulos, a lifelong resi dent of Saint Laurent, attended Gardenview Elementary School and LaurenHill Academy before pursuing a career in teaching. She actually started off at her

former high school before landing at Rosemount. Last May, Regional Director Pela Nickoletopoulos was in Ottawa for Ms. Lambropoulos’ swearing in ceremony as a Member of Parliament. She was a student of Miss Pela’s when she was the vice-principal at Gardenview and LaurenHill, and principal as well at the latter. “I feel a lot of pride and that my election was a positive message to people that hard work pays off,” said Ms. Lambropoulos. “I thought about my students quite a bit during the nomination campaign. I taught them about the nomination and election process as well and told them that I probably wasn’t going to win, but I was going to try anyways. My message to them was that if you’re determined, you should try no matter what obstacles might be in your way.” Her actions echoed that message as Ms. Lambropoulos went door-to-door on a nightly basis for the month leading up to the nomination vote. “I always knew that I had a chance of winning. I brought in over 1,000 members to the party, but when you hear the names of

(Top) Emmanuella Lambropoulos following her swearing in with former LaurenHill Academy Principal Dan Sipos. (R) Emmanuela Lampropoulos with EMSB Regional Director Pela Nickoletopoulos.

the two candidates, it feels like a real accomplishment,” she added. We work closely with all of our MPs and Members of the National Assembly. How exciting it will be to invite Emmanuella back to her former schools as a political dignitary. For our students, this accomplishment by a young teacher and one of our graduates is all about

achieving a goal through determination and hard work. Believe

in yourselves and you will see that anything is possible.

STAY TUNED FOR SCHOOL CLOSURES If an EMSB school or centre is closed due to weather conditions or for any other reason, you will learn about it first by following us on Twitter and Facebook @EnglishMTL. We will also have announcements made on the local radio and television stations and use our mass notification telephone and e-mail system.

CSEM

It was sponsored by La Capitale Financial Services. Held under the theme of Volunteers – Part of Our Heritage, the event also recognized Montreal’s 375th anniversary celebrations. Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre gave opening remarks. Football legend Anthony Calvillo, who had an outstanding career as the quarterback of the Montreal Alouettes where he is now an assistant coach, received the first ever EMSB Volunteer Ambassador of the Year Award. Anthony and his wife Alexia are the parents of two EMSB students. Over the past two decades, Anthony has graciously visited schools and shared his stay in school message with students. He was introduced by Montreal

at home, they always talked about the kids at Michelangelo. It made me feel like I had a lot of little brothers and sisters all the time.” About 23 years ago, Rosa and Rosario began volunteering at the school library, where they became a familiar presence with generations of students. Rosa, a full-time, stayat-home wife and mother had no previous knowledge of Library Science. However, the school librarians taught her everything she needed to know about how to run a library. “Within a short time, Rosa knew everything about the library, which was amazing,” said Rosario. “What usually happened was that the students would go to her and ask ‘Miss Rosa, I can’t find my book.’ They would give her the particular title and then she would tell me ‘Ross, go get this book for this little boy or little girl.’ At first, I would

have trouble finding the title, but somehow I always managed to find the books they were looking for. She even knew how to strictly enforce the library rules when it was absolutely necessary.” Rosario also marveled at how close a bond Rosa created not only with the other parent volunteers, but with many of the parents of the students, who always liked to drop by the library to chat with her, as well as how much she enjoyed volunteering there five days a week. “When this door opened for her, she loved it,” he said. “It got to the point that she loved volunteering at the library so much, she didn’t want to stay home.” “Rosa was a wonderful woman with a heart of gold. The love she had for the children was bigger than the universe. Her smile was infectious. Always ready to help and participate in any event where she was needed or not. She was a friend, a mother, a grand-mother to the children. She had a special way with them. She was loving and kind. Continued on page 8.

All Volunteer Night pictures were taken by

Gazette football reporter Herb Zurkowsky. The Volunteers of Distinction this year were Rosario Guzzo and his late wife Rosa from Michelangelo International Elementary School in RDP. Rosa passed away last January. Married for 33 years, Rosario and Rosa volunteered at Michelangelo for over 25 years, mainly in the school’s library. Rosario and his son Anthony, who was a student at Michelangelo as well as at Lester B. Pearson High School in Montreal North and graduated from St. Pius X Culinary Institute, was on hand to accept the award. Rosa and Rosario’s association with the school began when fiveyear-old Anthony was about to start attending Michelangelo as a student. It was at the encouragement of Rosario’s twin sibling that the couple should get involved with school life there as volunteers. They began helping out with school field trips (Rosario even supervised the school’s numerous trips to Ottawa), the annual Field Day, and practically every other activity that took place at the school. For Anthony, who was a student at Michelangelo throughout his elementary years and later attended Lester B. Pearson High School in Montreal North, having his parents there as a presence on a regular basis was at first a mixed blessing. “At the time, I was trying to impress my friends, so in the beginning it was a little embarrassing,” he admitted. “Now when I look back, I realized that having my parents at home and at school 24/7 made me feel that I was blessed. Every time when we were

Everyone loved her, from students, parents, and staff to the entire community. She will be dearly missed,” said Marisa Mineiro, Michelangelo International’s principal. “Rosa always dreamed of being a teacher, so the education environment was where she wanted to be, and sometimes I had to kick her out of the building. Even when this awful disease was slowly winning its battle, I would call her and I would hear her cutting paper with scissors and I would ask her what she was doing, and she said ‘I may be home, but I will help in any way I can.’ This was the type of human being she was. The library was her passion. She loved to read to the kids and take care of our library. She would get upset if we didn’t handle the books in a certain way. One of our last conversations in my office was about the library. She kept saying that it was HER library and she had expectations,” she added. In her memory and as a fitting tribute to Rosa’s impact on the school in general and the library in particular, Ms. Mineiro announced that the library will be named after Rosa, and that a reader award will also carry her name, which will be given to a student on an annual

basis. Although she wasn’t able to personally inform Rosa about what the school planned to do in her honour, someone else managed to let her know about it. “She apparently was so happy, that she told everyone who came to visit her that day,” said Ms. Mineiro. “She said it was the biggest honour. I didn’t make it on time to see her one last time after that, but knowing that she knew about it, made me feel at peace.” Rosa and Rosario were virtually childhood sweethearts, and were married for 33 years. They always enjoyed attending past Volunteer Appreciation Nights together, and became familiar with the EMSB parent volunteer community in recent years, when somehow either of their names were always drawn to win some of the major door prizes, which one year included a guitar from longtime Volunteer Night sponsor Steve’s Music Store. “I have to thank the Volunteer Night organizers for drawing their names when they won the guitar, because that’s how I actually learned to play that instrument,” interjected Anthony. “The other parent volunteers were always happy to see this little

woman who was my wife every year at Volunteer Night,” said Rosario. “At last year’s event, we met up with co-emcee (Global Montreal News anchor) Jamie Orchard, who had so much respect for us. We told her if you could do something good for boys and girls in the schools, then you should do it. We also told her that we have been volunteers for such a long time because we enjoy volunteering our time for the children. She thought that was amazing.” Rosario, who came to Canada from his native Italy at the age of six, is a retired employee of both Nortel and Bell Canada. He will continue to volunteer regularly at Michelangelo until the end of this school year, when he will step back from his involvement there. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he will be totally out of the picture from the Michelangelo community. “If one day someone from the school calls and asks me to help out with an activity, or needs an extra set of hands, I will certainly come over,” he said. Anthony agrees. “My dad says ‘no’ now, but he is the kind of guy who goes with the flow. If he feels like coming to the school, he will

come to the school. I’m sure he’ll be back,” he said. Time and space do not allow the EMSB to honour all of its nearly 1,500 volunteers in person. Therefore, only those individuals who volunteered for more than five years attended the reception, representing some 500 people. However, several thousand copies of a commemorative program book were distributed to each school. The emcees for the evening were Global News senior anchor Jamie Orchard and EMSB Communications and Marketing Specialist Michael Cohen. For the eighth consecutive year, La Capitale was the title sponsor for this event. La Capitale Financial Services (www.lacapitale.com) which is a member of La Capitale Financial Group, offers a wide range of products and services that are designed to simplify financial choices for members working in the public and parapublic sectors in over 900 public and parapublic institutions across the province. Eat Grow Learn EMSB unveils its F.A.B. 4 Nutrition Passport for Kindergarten by STUART NULMAN Calling all kindergarten teachers and their students to board onto flight # 09-2017 and discover the Food Rainbow! This September, kindergarten students of the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) will embark upon a journey with OKRA, their travel buddy, towards discovering the colourful world of healthy foods. To fly into kindergarten, all students will receive their very own “F.A.B. 4 (Feed a Brain with the 4 Food Groups) Nutrition Passport.” This is a new initiative of the EMSB’s Nutrition and Food Services, as part of its mission to promote health-enhancing attitudes and behaviours, as well as teach much-needed skills that will help students make healthier food choices. The “F.A.B. 4 Nutrition Passport” will bring awareness of the different foods belonging to the four food groups of Canada’s Food Guide and through their journey, the kindergarten students will learn to combine these foods to create a healthy plate. The passport is filled with a variety of age-appropriate educational activities whereby students will explore a variety of foods of the food rainbow and at the same time, learn about colours, counting and shapes! The students will travel across the Green, Yellow, Blue and Red arcs of the Food Rainbow and will go on an adventure as they discover new foods that will make them feel healthy and will nourish their brains!

These Pre-Kindergarten students from Gerald McShane Elementary School in Montreal North took part in exercise to draw a healthy breakfast.

B.A.S.E. Daycare Program’s Food Revolution Some 160 B.A.S.E. Daycare Program students arrived at St. Pius X Culinary Institute for the second annual Food Revolution Day Celebration one day last spring. A two-part event, students visited various booths under the theme of sustainable food before heading to the auditorium for an exciting cooking competition. Some of the booths included a compost relay race, pin the part on the plant game and food poetry. For the cook-off, 12 B.A.S.E.

students from six daycares teamed up with three chefs, Sergio Mattoscio, Diyar Mayil and Adam Piperni, to cook two dishes – one savoury, one sweet – in one hour for a panel of three judges. Both dishes had to include their assigned mystery ingredient, either basil, rosemary or mint! Most of the pantry produce was donated by Lufa Farms, whose personnel also ran a booth about where different foods come from around the world. To combat the rise in

childhood obesity, British chef Jamie Oliver launched the Food Revolution initiative in 2012. The aim of the movement is to educate people, especially chil-

dren, about healthy eating, home cooking and food security. Melina Trimarchi, B.A.S.E. Daycare Extracurricular Activities Advisor, has been imple-

menting cooking programs for the last four years and became a Food Revolution Ambassador for Montreal in 2015.

Juice or Fruit Drink….What is the Difference? AVOID FRUIT DRINKS:

CHOOSE REAL FRUIT JUICES:

A fruit drink is a drink that imitates a real fruit juice. The list of ingredients includes one or more of the following ingredients: SUGAR, COLOUR, NATURAL OR ARTIFICIAL FLAVOUR.

Read the labels carefully! The following words should appear on the container: 100% PURE, MADE FROM CONCENTRATE, UNSWEETENED.

BEWARE! TIPS OFFERED BY YOUR SCHOOL BOARD DIETITIANS • NUTRITION AND FOOD SERVICES

THE CLAIM “CONTAINS 25% REAL JUICE” DOES NOT EQUAL 100% PURE JUICE!

Eat Grow Learn

Meet our food and nutrition team by STUART NULMAN Nutrition and Food Services is a team of dedicated dietitians, food technicians, cooks and support staff responsible for food and nutrition related activities and programs in all EMSB schools. The mission of this unit is to enhance the health, well-being and educational success of EMSB students. The team contributes towards this mission through the creation of a healthy environment, the promotion of healthy eating habits and by ensuring food security in all EMSB schools. They avidly work to ensure the efficient service of the school cafeterias and Le Mini Bistro’s healthy school lunch service and the implementation of the EMSB Nutrition Policy as well as nutritional support and educational programs. EMSB’s Nutrition and Food Services conducts in-class educational activities on a regular basis in elementary schools and in high schools. Animated by an EMSB dietitian, these educational workshops teach students how to make healthier food choices by evaluating food labels and by helping them develop critical thinking when interpreting media messages about food. Furthermore, Nutrition Month takes place during the month of March. In elementary schools and high schools, a board-wide campaign is launched every year. Let’s meet some of the staff who make up the EMSB’s Nutrition and Food Services and who make it possible for our students to follow the path towards healthier eating.

Promoting healthy eating through physical education programs

Many school-wide initiatives led by physical education teachers promote healthy eating.

by KATHERINE BAKER All members of the school community play a role in the promotion of nutrition and healthy eating and the physi cal education program is no exception. Although the physical education curriculum itself only touches minimally on nutrition (the Quebec Education Program assigns nutrition education to various subject areas as opposed just one), several initiatives exist within the scope of physical education programs to promote healthy eating. Three years ago, a resource was developed by a team of EMSB teachers called “Healthy Active Kids in the Gym”. This resource contains a number of health-related games,

Friendly Reminders

including games such as Label Extravaganza and Let’s Do Lunch that teach students nutrition concepts while being physically active. Additionally, many schoolwide initiatives that are led by physical education teachers promote healthy eating. For example, Royal Vale School organizes an annual Active Family Evening where all parents and students are invited to school to enjoy an evening of physical activity together. Health food stores from the community participate in the evening and provide free smoothie samples and health bar samples to all attendees. Also, during the annual Jump Rope for Heart Day, all 450

students are provided with a snack of banana and orange slices and nut-free granola bar (thanks to the preparation of parent volunteers!). Another approach taken by General Vanier elementary is to promote a “1 ingredient” snack for recess (eg. a fruit or vegetable). Students at General Vanier also play a game during PE classes that requires them to retrieve food cards and place them in the proper food group. The next level to the game involves students having to choose the correct number of servings of each group for 1 day. These are just a few examples of the many ways that physical education programs promote healthy eating in

A Healthy and Safe

Lunch Box

Quick tips for preparing a balanced lunch:

• Add a grain product for energy. • Add a meat and alternatives product for a good source of protein needed for strong muscles and a healthy body. • Add a milk or milk alternative product for strong, healthy bones and teeth. A healthy balanced lunch is all about choosing different foods from the 4 food groups. A complete lunch supplies part of the energy and nutrients children need to stay healthy. Help your children learn about good nutrition. Use the following checklist to help you plan your child’s lunch.

MENU CHECKLIST: • Do all meals have foods from at least 3 of the 4 food groups? • Have you included a variety of foods from day to day? • Do the menus have a variety of colours, flavours and texture?

• Place a frozen ice pack in your child’s lunch box. Note: a frozen juice box can be used as an ice pack. • Many schools do not have microwave ovens to reheat food. Please use thermal containers “thermos” to keep food hot. • Use containers specifically designed for microwaves. Plastic margarine tubs, yogurt, tofu or cheese containers are not recommended for microwave cooking as they could melt and release harmful substances into the food. Many foods such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk and milk products, cooked peas and beans as well as sauce or mayonnaise spoil at room temperature. The use of thermal containers “thermos” or ice packs diminish the risk of food poisoning by keeping the food at the appropriate temperature. Throw away perishable leftovers after lunch because ice packs do not maintain cold temperatures long enough to keep food within safe temperatures. Remember; always wash fresh fruits and vegetables to remove dirt and insecticides, before eating.

SAFEGUARDS: • Keep hot foods hot (above 60°C (140°F). • Keep cold foods cold (below 4°C (40°F). • Wash hands before preparing or eating food. • Keep counter tops and utensils clean when preparing food. • Keep lunch boxes and thermos clean by washing with soap and water after each use.

Nutrition Month campaigns always reach out to primary and secondary students Thanks to many dedicated teachers and students who are hungry for nutritional knowledge, Nutrition Month always takes on prominence at the EMSB. Last year 12 schools, 30 classes and nearly 500 students participated to earn over 3,600 points combined by completing nutrition-related challenges throughout the month of March. Students learned about the meaning of a balanced breakfast, how to increase the quantity and quality of their fruits and veggies, how to ensure they have healthy bones and finally about the best drink to consume: water! Classes also got creative and came up with some of their own challenges: they made overnight oatmeal, created their own healthy food guide, concocted their own cheese and wrote up a healthy grocery list on a budget! The classes that accumulated the most points per cycle division were: Melissa Roma’s Pre-K class (Gerald McShane), Nancy Latulipe’s Grade 1 class (Roslyn) and Nina Wong’s Grade 5 class (Gardenview). They received a culinary workshop in recognition for their hard work. Meanwhile, Dalia Pardo’s Grade 5 class (Parkdale) won an IGA gift card! At the high school level, the EMSB 2017 Nutrition Month Campaign was March to Health – Are You Ready to Challenge Yourself to Become a Healthier You? To celebrate this event, high school teachers along with their students were invited to participate in educational activities and challenges to give students the knowledge and tools to make healthier food and beverage choices.

Friendly Reminder

Breakfast

Why is it important to have breakfast? • After a night of sleep, the body has fasted for 8 to 12 hours. A good breakfast provides the energy to start a fresh new day and carry out daily activities. • It has been proven to help children concentrate and perform better in school. • It helps control the appetite throughout the day to avoid overeating at lunch and supper. Students at Gardenview take part in their Snack for Charity fundraiser.

Gardenview Elementary School in St. Laurent always strives to promote healthy and mindful eating and last March’s Nutrition Month was filled with many different classroom activities. The month culminated in a Snack for Charity Fundraiser in Jennifer Furtado’s class. Nutrition is a key contributor to good mental health so the class provided a healthy array of treats available to Grade 6 students and raised over $500 for AMI-Québec, a grassroots organization dedicated to helping families cope with the effects of mental illness. The Gardenview Elementary School Leadership Committee, composed of Grades 5 and 6 students who have the responsibility of leading their school by example, organized a multicultural luncheon in honour of the different cultures in their school and in their city. Cycle 3 students had the opportunity to sample foods from all around the world and learn about different cultures. During this event that broadened the student's understanding of the world and their neighbors, $750 was raised and donated to the Montreal Children's Hospital.

• It is a great meal to fill up on important nutrients the body needs to stay in shape!

Make Time for Breakfast! It is important to eat breakfast before you put your brain to work! That means before you start school or go to work. It could be as soon as you get up from bed, before you walk out the door of your house or even on the bus. Almost any food can make a nutritious breakfast, even last night’s leftovers. The ideal breakfast should contain at least three foods from the four different food groups.

5 Breakfast Tips LIMIT SWEETS: Avoid foods high in sugar, like sugar coated cereals. These foods will not keep your child satisfied for a very long time, and they are more likely to feel hungry again very soon. Add raisins or bananas to a bowl of cereal. They will add incredible sweetness, texture and nutrients to it.

1

STOCK UP: Keep your kitchen stocked with breakfast foods such as: cereals, milk, yogurt, whole grain breads, frozen waffles or pancakes, bagels, eggs, peanut butter and cheese.

2

GET READY: Spend a few minutes each evening preparing for the next day’s breakfast. Prepare your pancake mix, set out cereal boxes and the toaster, cut up fruit.

3

GIVE IT TIME: Wake up a little earlier so that you and your child have time to eat breakfast. They’ll feel less rushed and feel more ready to conquer the day.

4

NO TIME? If you don’t have time for breakfast at home, pack it in your child’s lunch box so that they can eat it when they get to school just before class or during recess time. Pack along a wholewheat muffin, a fruit yogurt, fresh fruit, puddings, crackers and/or juice boxes.

Nutritious Snacks Quick tips for choosing nutritious snacks: • Avoid sending low nutritional value snacks such as sweetened fruit bars or candied fruit, cream filled cookies, cookies with icing, chocolate/ yogurt coated granola bars, commercial cakes, chocolate bars or candies, salty/deep-fried snacks (chips, dried noodles) Although tasty, they add no nutritional value to your child’s diet. In fact, these foods fill your child’s body with unwanted amounts of refined sugar, salt, empty calories and chemical preservatives! Moreover, they spoil your child’s appetite for nutritious foods needed to support a healthy body! A great performance in school and sports depends on good nutrition!

GUIDELINES for choosing healthier snacks Students from the Presecondary Common Core Basic Education Program (CCBE) class of Nootan Kumar’s course at the St. Laurent Adult Education Centre, along with Lucy Panetta’s CCBE literacy students at John F. Kennedy Adult Centre, volunteered at the People’s Potato, a soup kitchen and food bank at Concordia University. The People’s Potato is an incredible non-profit organization that is an antioppressive, anti-capitalist and inclusive space. Their belief that food is a right, rather than a

privilege, is demonstrated by their commitment to offer all services for free, including serving quality vegan meals to approximately 500 people a day for no charge. “We were welcomed warmly by the People’s Potato team,” said statement from the students. “We greatly enjoyed our time with them, and learned a lot from them. We did a lot of tasks, such as preparing food boxes for the food bank and cooking new dishes. We ate a delicious meal together, while discussing this impressive organization with our classmates and colleagues from

All the Way with the Impact

Alouettes Fundraisers Left to right: Leonardo Da Vinci Academy Principal Nadia Sammarco, EMSB Vice Chair Sylvia Lo Bianco, Impact Director Business Development and Lester B. Pearson High School grad Rino Folino, Christian Weiman and Simona Lombardo Varisco.

For the 12 th year in a row, the EMSB has continued its partnership with the Montreal Impact soccer team through its “All the Way with the Impact” program. Members of the Impact visit schools to remind young students of the importance of studying, persevering and building self-confidence in order to succeed. The traditional “EMSB Night” took place on May 30 when the Impact hosted the Vancouver Whitecaps at Saputo Stadium.

This was part of the Amway Canadian Championship, which involves the three top professional clubs in Canada, in the race to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League. That is an international competition between professional clubs from North America, Central America and the Caribbean. More than 2,250 tickets were sold to EMSB students and staff for the game. Before the game the EMSB’s presence was recognized and two

students were presented with the Tony Licursi Bursary, valued at $500 each. Mr. Licursi was the team’s statistician and a devoted member of the James Lyng High School Alumni Association. He passed away a number of years ago. The award recognizes excellence in school and sports, preferably soccer. This winners were Christian Weiman from Royal Vale School in NDG and Simona Lombardo Varisco from Leonardo Da Vinci Academy in RDP.

It was EMSB Night at the Montreal Alouettes home opener on June 22 at Molson Stadium against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Through the remainder of this season, EMSB schools have a special opportunity to purchase tickets and use this as a simple fundraiser at the same time. Every school will receive a unique link and promo code. Parents and EMSB staff can print the tickets from their home or office. Anyone who wishes to do this the old fashioned way can call John Di Terlizzi at 514-787-2755 and he will handle the request. Tickets are $16 each, with $3 going back to each school. During the off season Alouettes players The 20th anniversary of the a wellreceived community outreach program called Together at School with the Alouettes was launched recently by Montreal’s professional football team at FACE School downtown. During the course of the visit, Alouettes players visit schools and address the students about the importance of academic perseverance and making good choices, while touching on other topics such as performance in school, consistency, peer pressure and self-esteem. Five high schools (James Lyng, Royal Vale, Marymount Academy International, Laurier Macdonald and Vincent Massey), four alternative high schools (Options, Outreach, Focus and Vezina) and three elementary schools ( East Hill, Edward Murphy and Gerald McShane) were part of last year’s tour.

Partnership with the Arctic There is a new professional hockey team in town. The Laval Rocket are the American Hockey League affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens and will play their home games out of the brand new Place Bell. This will be an

opportunity to see the future stars of the NHL in action. The Rocket intend to be very active in the community, including school visits and special fundraising opportunities. Schools will also have the opportunity to organize

group experiences at a reduced rate. These experiences include, watching the pre-game warmup on the players bench, sing the national anthem or the classic group picture on the ice. For all details, log on to www.rocketlaval.com.

Sports Concentration at Gerald McShane Students at Gerald McShane Elementary School in Montreal North can now enroll in a new sports concentration program. As a feeder school to Lester B. Pearson High School, budding athletes at Gerald McShane will

be able to hone their skills in advance of entering high school. “Our new sports concentration program will give our students a head start before entering high school,” said Christina Chilelli, Principal of Gerald McShane

Elementary School. “The earlier student-athletes begin to develop a balance between athletics and academics, the better they will fare in both areas. We’re thrilled to be able to offer this to our school community beginning next year.”

The St. Léonard/Montreal North Arctic of the AAA Quebec Junior Hockey League and the EMSB will resume their partnership this year. Head coach Gianni Cantini and his players visit many East End schools to take part in floor hockey scrimmages and to talk about the importance of getting a good education. Students and staff are provided with tickets to games. School officials take part in ceremonial opening faceoffs and on a few occasions students get to sing the national anthem. The Arctic have a number of EMSB grads on their roster. Coach Cantini attended Honoré-Mercier Elementary School, John Paul I Junior High School and Laurier Macdonald High School in St. Léonard. Team owner Joe Perretta and his wife, vice-president Lina Di Giovanni are very pleased with how the partnership continues to work out. Ms. Di Giovanni was a long-time EMSB parent volunteer. The Arctic team uniforms include an EMSB logo on the shoulder. Their daughter Alexia, a former student at Dalkeith, John Paul I and Laurier Macdonald, handles the team’s marketing duties.

SPORT-ÉTUDES AT THE EMSB Lester B. Pearson High School's Sport-Études program is designed for the high performance athlete who is able to maintain high academic standards. This high-level program is recognized by the ministère de l'Éducation et de l'Enseignement supérieur (MEES) and is administered in conjunction with provincial sports federations. It allows students to combine learning an athletic sport and academic studies, in order to achieve excellence in both spheres. We provide our student athletes with a supportive environment which will enable them to succeed academically while pursuing their athletic careers. The Sport-Études program provides for a personalized daily schedule, daily study hall and tutorials, sufficient time to practice and compete in your sport, flexible deadlines and the opportunity to e-mail or fax assignments and projects.
