Last winter Emma*, a young mother, and her two small children walked barefoot to our shelter in the snow and slush. They were barefoot because dad controlled when they could, or could not, leave their home. When they put on their shoes, dad would know they were leaving. This time, it was not safe for dad to know. Because of you, CAPSA provided shoes and a place of safety. Last year, CAPSA helped 1,075 individuals fleeing abuse.

THEY HAD A SAFE PLACE Emma and her children found refuge in CAPSA's shelter. For Emma, this was the first time in years that she slept without fear. With a caseworker assisting her, she found a job and daycare for her two small children. Your support allowed CAPSA to shelter 16 men, 142 women, and 162 children last year. [320 Individuals sheltered, 6,878 nights, 20,634 meals]

THEY HAD AN EXPERT TO HELP Emma's relationship was very dangerous. A CAPSA caseworker worked with her to create a plan to ensure her family's safety and helped her complete a protective order. CAPSA has 7 caseworkers working with our clients to break the cycle of abuse for them and their children. In 2017, CAPSA completed 254 protective orders.

THEY HAD A WAY TO HEAL During her stay in shelter, Emma and her older daughter started attending therapy. In the last two years, CAPSA expanded its therapy from 1 to 6 therapists. This was only possible because of our new Therapy Center. In 2016, CAP SA provided 2,718 hours of therapy for 336 clients. With your support, we will continue to expand our therapy.

THEY HAD A PLACE TO CALL HOME In 2015, CAPSA completed a nine-home neighborhood, which was only possible because of local donors like you . You have given Emma a place to call home and to begin her life again. CAPSA provided housing assistance to 25 families in 2017. *Names and stories are altered for the purpose of safety and confidentiality

CAPSA completed the Gail Bird Weinshenker Therapy Center and Mary Flynn Palley Children's Center addition spring 2017. This addition adds five therapy offices above a new children's center. This addition allows CAPSA to provide additional FREE and specialized therapy for primary and secondary victims and holistic children services. Therapy is available for adults, teens, and children who have associated trauma from domestic violence, sexual abuse, and rape. Therapy is available for both recent or past trauma (including abuse as a child). One of our clients said about this addition, "It makes me feel good to know the community supports CAPSA and a place like this. This addition makes me feel cared for and supported." We want to thank all our donors who supported this building project. Your donation built more than an addition, it built hope and healing for our clients.

FIRST SHELTER IN UTAH TO HAVE ZERO TURN-A-WAYS CAPSA is the first domestic violence shelter in Utah to not turn away qualified individuals seeking shelter 1 Imagine the courage it takes to leave an abusive relationship and ask for help - this is why emergency shelters exist. However, shelters across Utah are forced to turn away thousands of individuals seeking shelter because of limited space and lack of funding. CAPSA committed in June 2076 to ensure there will always be a safe place for anyone leaving a dangerous relationship. CAPSA is working with local hotels to provide rooms at a discounted rate. Your monthly donation of $5 guarantees a safe place for a night for someone fleeing abuse.

$5 PER MONTH = A SAFE PLACE Last year, CAPSA spent more than $6,000 on hotels to ensure every qualified individual had a place to escape abuse. The funding for zero turn-a-ways is from individual and partnering businesses (employee payroll deductions). You can help by setting up a monthly donation.
