Energy efficient cultivation: Kellermann uses refrigeration for heating

Kellermann in Ellikon an der Thur, Switzerland Perfect combination for energy- efficient cold and heat supply: Kellermann in Ellikon an der Thur, one of Switzerland‘s largest vegetable producers, stores its vegetable products in numerous cold storage rooms – and uses the heat generated by the refrigeration system to heat the greenhouses. This clever solution was implemented by Johnson Controls.

The Swiss company Kellermann cultivates lettuce and salad vegetables in the open, as well as tomatoes in the greenhouse. The products for retail, catering and industry are processed on the company premises where they are also packed and stored in refrigerated warehouses until dispatched for delivery. In the past, the warehouses were kept cold by several decentralised refrigeration systems running on synthetic refrigerants. Only part of the heat energy generated in this process was then used by the company for heating. Following the construction of new cold storage facilities with increased refrigeration demands, Kellermann looked for a sustainable energy-efficient solution for central

refrigeration and heat supply. The order was awarded to Johnson Controls for a bespoke solution that combines an ammonia-based refrigeration system with heat recovery. What makes this system special: it feeds the process heat from the refrigeration system into an integrated heat pump. Here hot water is produced at a temperature of 60°C to heat the greenhouses. This is a real advantage compared to the previous concept where the warehouses were heated by a separate gas heating system for a relatively long part of the year due to the Swiss climate.

Refrigeration and heat demand varies according to the time of year and harvest volume. In winter for example, the required refrigeration capacity is reduced on account of the lower outside temperatures, while more heat is needed in the greenhouses. The system has three different operating modes to respond to these changes. If necessary, the staff can call up various functions on a graphic control panel and intervene manually. By changing over to a new system, Kellermann has been able to achieve significant reductions in the costs for refrigeration and heat generation. Coupling the refrigeration system with a heat pump makes a particularly large contribution to the savings. The heat pump generates 4 to 5 GWh heating energy per year. This saves the

company 500,000 m3 of natural gas for heating the greenhouses. The environment benefits as well: the central refrigeration and heat supply system reduces carbon emissions by 790 tonnes every year.
