Engaging students in the voting process Student Vote provides youth under the voting age with an opportunity to experience the voting process firsthand and build the habits of active and engaged citizenship. The program is an excellent way to create a ‘teachable moment’ out of the official election. Students learn about government and the electoral process, and research the issues, parties and candidates through classroom learning, campaign activities, media consumption and family dialogue. On Student Vote Day, students take on the roles of election officials and coordinate a vote for the election candidates running in their school’s electoral district. The results are reported to CIVIX confidentially and shared publicly following the close of the polls. The Student Vote project for the 2017 BC provincial election is being conducted in partnership with Elections BC and with support from the Vancouver Foundation. Participating schools will receive activity guides, campaign posters, electoral district maps, ballots and ballot boxes. The program is offered at no cost and open to all BC schools. Registration is open until April 21 at http://studentvote.ca/bc2017/

ast week, Kit and I had a conversation with a group of principals and vice-principals representing the distributed learning programs around the province. Our aim was to better understand the context of their work and the challenges that they face. My thanks to Kai Taylor, VP, Distributed Learning, Alternate Education and Instructional Technology in Campbell River, for facilitating this opportunity to talk to his distributed learning colleagues about their successes and challenges. In our conversation, I let Kai know that it is important for the BCPVPA to understand the work of district principals and vice-principals so that we are better positioned to provide support for their work and their employment relationship. The reality is that for distributed learning school leaders, and other program principals and vice-principals, their work needs to be better understood by senior managers, their colleagues and our Association. As part of the draft BCPVPA Strategic Plan for 20172020, under the goal, strengthen the engagement of members with the Association and each other, we have included the objective; • Improve support for the unique needs of District Principals and Vice-Principals. When we imagine our schools in an era of increasing reliance on technology and student choice, it is clear that the leadership of District Principals and Vice-Principals will grow in its importance as we work to prepare our students to thrive in a rapidly changing world. In the meantime, BCPVPA’s new Strategic Plan makes it clear that their unique needs are front-and-center as our directions are set. Recently, the Ministry released a new web platform for parents and school personnel to provide easier access to student demographic and achievement data. The website was presented to the Board of Directors several months ago and the Board provided feedback to the Ministry on behalf of our members. Access to this http://bit.ly/2oAaUR3 data enhances our members ability to make evidence-based decisions, which are central to the success of their school and programs by demonstrating trends and quantifying indicators. This mobile-friendly site is in its early stages and it will continue to grow and evolve as more data options are added. Ministry representatives will provide an overview to Chapter Council members and as part of our spring webinar series. Have a great weekend, Kevin eNews 7
