HAVE YOU TRIED USING FACEBOOK MARKETING? IT’S FRUSTRATING.

FOR

A POST THAT SEEMS GREAT TO YOU IS JUST ANOTHER IN SOMEONE’S NEWS FEED. IT GOES IGNORED, AND YOUR MARKETING SUFFERS. Fortunately, you can take steps as a marketers to get your audience’s attention. With this comprehensive marketing cheat sheet, you will learn how to distinguish your Facebook posts from the plain, old, boring ones that dominate your news feed.

MAKE BUSINESS PERSONAL Had a great day? Were you bored all day? Was it raining out? Include references to feelings within your posts to avoid sounding too automatic and scripted. Even just a small amount of authenticity in your posts is enough to tip the scales between fan engagement and boredom.

USE PHOTOS AND VIDEO Photos and videos in your posts increase engagement tenfold. By some estimates, users are up to 100% more engaged when shown images or videos. Get fans’ attention with different types of media and share something thoughtful, useful, or exciting. Facebook users have proven time and again to get easily distracted.

FREQUENCY IS KEY The average lifespan of a post is a little under three hours. With this in mind, consider posting more than once a day, or risk falling to the bottom of one’s news feed.

CONTESTS, ANYONE? Nothing engages your fans more than contests. People love free stuff and promotions. Remember, Facebook has specific rules for hosting contests, so be sure to follow them, or risk getting reported. Want to try something even MORE engaging? Have users vote on contest winners.

COVER CURRENT EVENTS Holidays around the corner? Be festive! Big news story or industry development, talk about it! Show your brand is at the forefront of the latest developments, and communicate how these events affect your brand or team members.

ASK QUESTIONS Ask fans questions on your page. Questions about people or places (read: who or where) tend to be more successful in engaging fans than long-winding ones (why). That’s probably because fans feel more comfortable responding to something simple and straightforward. Take that to heart, and embrace it in your marketing campaigns.

RESPOND TO POSTS By some estimates, up to 95% of brands don’t respond to comments made on their Facebook page. Engage your customers and fans by responding to comments and showing you are active and concerned with how they feel about your brand. Even a simple response goes a long way in instilling confidence in your brand leadership.

USE HUMOR After a long day of work at the office, a brand that makes people laugh will often have a high level of engagement. Humorous pictures and memes are highly sharable content that the fans will want to share with their friends.

PLEASE, BE HUMAN! Avoid looking robotic by uploading pictures of your employees enjoying life at the office. Whether they’re doing their job, eating a great meal, or engaging in fun, personal initiatives, add some humanistic character to the dry world of business. The goal: make your Facebook fans feel as if they know your team personally.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING Post to Facebook during the early afternoon, between 1 and 3 PM to take advantage of peak traffic. Not surprisingly, that’s when links posted get the most clicks, too! Avoid overnight posts - by morning they fall to the bottom of one’s news feed.

PIN OR HIGHLIGHT POSTS With the arrival of the Facebook timeline format for business pages last year, page owners are now able to “pin” (bring posts to the top of the page’s timeline) or “highlight” (expands the post to fit the width of the timeline, making it larger and more visible) posts on the page. The best content can stand out or be most visible.

KNOW YOUR DEMOGRAPHICS Facebook provides page owners with a great analytics tool in Page Insights. Take advantage of the data contained within Insights to learn more about your audience’s demographics, including age, gender, location, etc.

POST DIFFERENT CONTENT Find a cool infographic? Sweet. Feel like sharing a quote? Do it. Take a nice image in the office? Post it. Post different kinds of content on your page to avoid boring users with more of the same. There are plenty of types of content that can be shared over Facebook, including photos, videos, text, links, infographics, charts, etc.
