You will soon be making an important decision about your education and your future. What you do next is important, and we’re here to help you every step of the way. You can choose one of two pathways to higher education or employment: an Apprenticeship or a full-time study programme here at the College. If you choose the Apprenticeship route, we have a wide range of career frameworks for you to choose from. You will then start work with an employer and learn while you earn, supported throughout by our friendly team of Assessors. If you decide to study full-time at College, we also have a great range of study programmes covering a variety of professions and occupations.

www.boltoncollege.ac.uk

As you study for your chosen career, we will help you with preparation for work and provide you with essential work experience opportunities. Our team of Learning Mentors will support you throughout. Whichever route you choose to take, we will provide you with the skills and qualifications that employers or universities are looking for. If you need a little extra help, we’ve got your back. Ofsted, who visited us in March 2015, have seen that our learners ‘grow in confidence’ and ‘feel highly valued as individuals’, because they are able to develop in a ‘highly inclusive learning environment’. So, if you’d like some support with choosing your next step, feel free to drop into Student Services or call the team on 01204 482 182.

English and maths are at the root of all we do Page 12 | English & Maths

FAQs 1. I’m no good at English and maths. What’s the point? We think you can be and we can prove it. The teaching and learning approach to English and maths at College is very different from school – and it works! 2. I left school without GCSE A*-C in English and/or Maths – what will happen now? You will be expected to continue to study to achieve these as part of your study programme, until you gain a Grade C (or equivalent). 3. So I can work towards achieving GCSE A*-C in English and/or Maths? Yes! You’ll study in English and/or maths classes, depending on your current level of achievement. If you achieved a Grade D or E, you will be automatically enrolled onto a GCSE course. If not, you will study for Functional Skills qualifications – leading to a GCSE – at a pace that suits you.

4. What are Functional Skills? They’re not just about knowledge of English and maths. They’re about knowing when and how to use this knowledge in real-life situations, to help you operate confidently and independently in life and at work. 5. I’ve already achieved GCSEs A*-C. Will I still study English and maths? Only if you want to, or if you need a Level 3 in English or maths for your desired career or HE course. 6. I need extra support with my English and maths. Can I get some help? Yes! We know you have the ability to pass and our tutors are experts in getting you there. Additional help will be provided if you need it. Also, if you have difficulties or disabilities, English and maths will form an important part of your programme, and we will help you to develop these skills at a pace and level to suit you. Work-related learning, work experience and preparation for work will also play key roles in your programme. English and maths will be embedded into these too.

You can expect to earn 15% more over your lifetime with GCSE Maths

The students here are clearly the main priority – the College is supportive and well organised and I like the structured environment that we learn in. It’s important that the teaching is very good; the tutor makes the class very interactive and reinforces the principles of maths with some great visuals. I’m also learning from the other students – the class feed off each other so it’s really productive. When it came to my maths exam, I felt prepared. The reinforcements given by the tutor really helped - on results day, I think we’ll see that everyone benefited from that. Poppy Aindow BTEC Art & Design Diploma Level 3 Home Educated

It’s so important to get your English GCSE - you need it for employment or to progress to university. Here, there’s much more interaction between the students and tutors than there was at school. The tutor is very supportive and is always happy to help which means my confidence has really grown – when I went into the exam I felt very confident that I would do well. My Apprenticeship has been great. I’ve been encouraged to explore all types of art: photography, concept art, graphics, textiles, painting and drawing. I’ve actually worked for the College’s own Marketing Department. They were keen that I gained experience in other areas so arranged a placement at Impression, a local signage company, to learn the production side of things. When it came to choosing a college, Bolton College stood out from all the rest; the staff were so friendly and it seemed to be a really good place to learn.

I actually wanted to go into childcare because I have a brother with special needs; he inspired me to work with children like him in the future and childcare seemed like the best path for me to take to achieve this.

I’ve always wanted to get into childcare so when I was at school I worked one day a week at Fun Days to gain some work experience. My boss really liked me and asked me to stay on to do an Apprenticeship which I started in September 2015. I love everything about the Apprenticeship but I particularly enjoy gaining experience from people already trained in the industry - it’s so much easier learning from professionals in a practical environment. If you’re good with your hands and you enjoy making things, then a career in construction could be for you. The construction industry provides the opportunity to work on a range of different projects, both at home and abroad, with the chance of one day becoming your own boss.

I’d done my A-Levels and was trying to figure out my next step. I needed some experience and wanted some industry qualifications, and I thought an Apprenticeship would be perfect because I’d be getting paid as well. It’s a great way to get your foot in the door of your chosen industry, and you get a lot of experience because you’re practising what you’re learning every single day. A lot of employers want experience, so I’d definitely recommend an Apprenticeship.

You’ll learn the tricks of the trade from experienced tutors in spacious workshops using industry-standard tools and materials. You’ll also get to visit current construction sites.

I did my work experience in the make-up industry so wanted to study this when I left school. I’d heard good things about Bolton College so came to the Open Evening and decided that this was the place for me. Unlike school, we’re all treated as adults and the tutors are really approachable and give us lots of advice. I’m really happy that the programme has lived up to the expectations I had after the Taster Day – everything we did on the day, we’ve done on the programme. The catwalk preparation side of hairdressing is really interesting. I love creative stuff like this - colouring, colour correction, learning different cutting techniques - it’s great for my portfolio. We get to use big brand products like those in the industry and the salon facilities are really good. The programme is brilliant for someone who wants to gain advanced skills in hairdressing. After this, I plan on working on a cruise ship and seeing the world. After that, I’d love to have my own mobile hairdressing business. Motor Vehicle Full-Time Study Programmes Motor Vehicle Maintenance Introduction Entry Level

Being an apprentice makes me feel like a valued employee – I’m earning money at the same time as working alongside industry professionals, so I’m also learning quickly because I’m seeing it being done, then doing it myself. I’ve developed a lot - I was frightened about talking to customers but the Apprenticeship has brought me out of my shell. I’m so much more confident now and I talk to customers regularly, it’s no longer a big deal. In the future, I’d love to work in Formula 1. Public Services Full-Time Study Programmes The tutors here are like family; they help me when I need it and are really kind. That’s the reason I progressed to Level 3, because Level 2 was fun and helped me a lot. I’d also met new people and made some good friends. Passing Out Parade for proud Cadets

The tutors encouraged me to apply as a volunteer for the Fire Service. I go out into the community and give safety advice. It’s helped me to learn how to communicate with people from different backgrounds and what you get back in return is just amazing. One of the tutors even recommended me for some volunteering work in Hungary, helping people in poverty and I’ve gained a lot of experience from this too.

Public Services Case study I want to be a Special in Win theBen Police so this is a good

programme to get me into this field. The tutors are very supportive and we get a lot of volunteers coming in, telling us all about their service. One day we visited Mountain Rescue who told us about their volunteer work. I’m also doing Maths Entry Level and English Level 1; at school I hated these subjects but I’m now starting to enjoy them, probably because the tutors are so helpful.

I am dedicated and committed - there are only two boxing programmes offered in the whole of the North West so I travel in from Rochdale for three hours every day to be here. I think it’s definitely worth it; the facilities are good, I train a lot and I’m treated like a full-time professional athlete. Tony Challenor is my Coach in the gym - he knows what he’s doing and he has good training and boxing knowledge. He teaches to a professional standard and even though it’s hard, it’s very rewarding. After this programme, I’m going to find myself a parttime job and start training full-time; my short-term goal is to win the GBA Championships next year. Boxing is my life, I have a passion for it and I really think that I can go far.

I’d done my A-Levels and was working at Bolton Arena when they offered me the position of an apprentice. This was ideal because it meant increasing my teaching hours and gaining a qualification at the same time, plus I’ve always wanted a career in coaching. I enjoy the practical side most and I coach gymnastics nightly for at least four hours at a time. I want to continue working as a Coach because the Apprenticeship has really pushed me to excel. I wanted to be a Professional Footballer from a young age so coaching is the next best thing.

If you live and breathe the beautiful game then we’re the Premiership College for you.

The tutors are very helpful; Stuart and Neil are like friends and mentors rolled into one. They supported me when I went to Romania for two weeks to teach children in a school; we helped them with their fitness and education. They only had a ball and some space but Stuart and Neil taught us that if you don’t have the materials, make the most of what you do have – they really helped us to prepare for the experience.

Our Curriculum Leader is a Manchester United Academy Coach so you’ll gain valuable experience by watching and learning from the very best. You’ll also hone your skills competing in 11-a-side matches, wearing our very own branded kits worth over £100.

Everything in College is good, there’s always a sporting activity to do so I’d really recommend it. Over the summer I’d like to get a coaching job and then I’m going to do a Sport BTEC to increase my knowledge of all sports. Mohammad Hassan Football Academy NVQ Level 3 Essa Academy

With opportunities to coach in the USA through Challenger Sports UK, plus mountain biking and skiing trips, we have it all and more. Children come into College and I’ve been able to coach them; it’s great passing on my experience and seeing the kids progress - I’m really proud of them. There’s a great team spirit on the programme with everyone helping each other out – I had an evaluation session last week and some of the guys came in to help me out.

I’d recommend the Apprenticeship route; you learn so much at College and then get to apply it in a real job, as part of a team. I tried to study full-time before and just couldn’t stick at it – but the Apprenticeship offered me the right balance. I’d like to be a Teacher one day, so my next step is to become a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA), then do a foundation degree, followed by a full degree and finally a PGCE.

I want to train to be a Primary School Teacher but first I wanted to experience working in an actual primary school. My confidence in the classroom has increased significantly. The Apprenticeship has equipped me with both knowledge and experience which has allowed me to build and maintain relationships with both the children and staff. In the future, I plan on studying primary education and gaining my Qualified Teacher Status at Edge Hill University.

Foundation Learning College offers new opportunities with smaller class sizes, an informal approach to teaching, and focused support - with extra support for the D/deaf or visually impaired. Foundation Learning enables you to sample different subject areas before choosing the right one for you. All of our programmes are practical and many include local work experience. They will provide flexible pathways that could lead on to a full-time vocational programme at College or into voluntary/paid employment.

I completed a Traineeship before starting my Apprenticeship. It's really helped to build my confidence and gave me the tools that I needed to take the next step in my learning. I now work at Wilson’s Autos as an Apprentice Mechanic, I’ve come out of my shell and my communication skills have really improved – I used to be terrified of speaking on the phone but I can now take customer calls which is something I’m really proud of.

Foundation Studies

Youth Provision

Traineeships

Foundation studies provides the opportunity for learners with a range of learning difficulties and disabilities to progress their life experience, confidence, and maths and English. This is achieved through further learning, developing independence and completing work experience.

If school didn’t work out for you, you’re unsure about your next step and need to improve your English and maths in order to progress, we are here to help you choose the right programme to suit your needs.

If you are work-ready but unable to secure an Apprenticeship, a Traineeship could be the ideal stepping stone for you. You will work with an employer for two days a week and come into College one day a week to learn about maths, English and employability.

Our programmes provide a range of opportunities to personalise progression to the next level. The programmes focus on developing employability skills, independence, maths and English, and enterprise skills – with ‘Enterprise Week’ and competitions running throughout the year.

Youth provision enables you to sample different subject areas before choosing the right one for you. All of our programmes are practical and include local work experience. They provide flexible pathways that can lead on to a full-time vocational programme at College or into voluntary/paid employment.

You will be supported by a Job Coach who will help you in your placement, and the Traineeship can lead to an Apprenticeship or further learning at College.

Embedded in the programmes are vocational tasters, enrichment activities and a work placement.

I’m looking forward to completing my Level 2 at the end of the year. One day, I hope to manage a garage and then eventually run my own business. Ashley Haslam Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Apprenticeship Level 2 Rumworth School www.boltoncollege.ac.uk

Since starting this course I’ve been promoted twice, first to Supervisor and then to Contract Manager! The course was a fantastic help – it was fluent, the content was brilliant, and the tutors were so supportive and reassuring; if you put in the time and effort, you will definitely succeed. I’m looking to do a degree next as the HNC has really helped to prepare me for this. Eventually I’d like to get in to architecture because I have an obsession with designing things. I’d recommend the College to everybody – it’s been fantastic and really beneficial. Chris Bennett Construction and the Built Environment – HNC Level 4

The encouragement of all-round development. Students get to socialise, try out different sports, participate in fundraising, organise shows or even volunteer as a representative for their class.

ATTENDANCE, PUNCTUALITY & BEHAVIOUR

We closely monitor attendance and punctuality to ensure that young people have the very best chance to succeed; as part of our partnership approach, we will contact parents and carers immediately if we identify any issues with attendance, behaviour or progress. In turn, parents and carers can call us to speak to a personal tutor regarding any concerns they may have.

We are an inclusive, supportive, safe and friendly College, with a positive approach to equality and a commitment to countering discrimination and anti-social behaviour.

Your Guide to Admissions The Admissions Team work with all academic departments to ensure that applicants receive a smooth and efficient service, helping them to make the easiest possible transition into further education. The Admissions Team process applications for both full-time programmes and Apprenticeships and have assembled a list of questions that may answer a few of your concerns.

FAQs 1. When will I hear something about my application? The Admissions Team aim to process your application form within 15 working days. Once processed, you will then be contacted by text or email informing you that we have received your application form and will be in touch with your interview date. Important: please keep your mobile number and email address up-to-date. 2. What programme will I be interviewed for? Admissions will invite you to be interviewed for the first choice of programme you applied for. If you feel you would like an interview for your second choice or any other programme area please contact us on 01204 482 181/195. You can also email us at [email protected] 3. How will I receive my interview date and time? Your interview date will be sent out to you by text or email two weeks prior to your interview date. You will be asked to book your interview time. There are two options to book your interview; visit the link and the

Page 138 | Your Guide to Admissions

message will take you to our online booking page or you can phone the Admissions Team. 4. What is a ‘conditional/ provisional offer’? A conditional offer is a promise that we will provide you with a programme place, as long as you achieve certain criteria. This could include obtaining particular GCSE grades, finding a suitable work placement or receiving a satisfactory reference. At your interview you will be given a ‘Details of Course Offer’ form explaining the outcome of the interview. If you are successful your offer will be confirmed to you in writing. However, if you don’t meet the specified conditions, we can still help you to look at other options and offer programme advice if necessary. 5. How do I make changes to my contact details? If you need to make any changes to your application, please contact the Admissions Team on 01204 482 181/195. If you have any further questions about the process of your application please do not hesitate to contact the Admissions Team.
