The lacquer finish which protects and magnifies the natural beauty of RootWorks products is safe for food contact, although we do not recommend them for hot food service. RootWorks products should occasionally be treated with a light wax product to help brighten their luster. Hand wash and dry.

The tree only bears fruit for a number of decades, after which it is cut down by the farmer to make room for new seedlings. The exquisite EcoTeak gadgets are handmade in the foothills of the mountains of Northern Thailand from reclaimed teak and solid brass. The wood begins its life as tattered and weathered pieces of old Thai houses, fences, and farm structures. The exterior of the silvered wood, worn down by use and exposure, is then carefully milled away to reveal the rich gold and chocolate tones of ancient teak. These precious pieces of history are shaped and bored in the small shop of a clever Englishman who has spent the better part of his life in Asia, seeking interesting materials and products to share with the world. He and a small handful of local Thai artisans work the teak and brass into our wonderful and unique collection of gourmet gadgets. Finished in a food-safe lacquer or oil. Hand wash and dry.

ABOUT US Enrico’s first cheese grater creation was truly a labor of love. Just before the turn of the century, Enrico Ratti worked as a carpenter for a wealthy family near Castagnetto, Italy, and fell in love with their daughter, Luisa. The family would not give their blessing for Luisa to wed the orphan Enrico, so they eloped to America, bringing with them their love of the dishes of the Italian countryside. Alas, America lacked the tools of a traditional Italian kitchen, so Enrico fashioned by hand the predecessor of today’s Enrico Grater for the rich hard cheeses they so cherished.

The Enrico Products collection began with Enrico Ratti’s decades-old hard cheese grater design and has grown into an extensive range of tabletop, home décor, and kitchenware products. Jim Ratti, one of the co-founders of Enrico Products and an accomplished woodworker himself, used one of his grandfather’s original graters as a model for the first prototypes of the modern version we now offer. At the time Jim was partnered with Chad Richardson, another Enrico co-founder, in an overseas sourcing consultancy helping designers and inventors bring their ideas to market, which has provided a set of skills critical to Enrico’s success. Jim then brought the early prototypes to Dave Hoots, an entrepreneurial custom furniture builder and the third Enrico co-founder; the design refinements and development conversations expanded from there and laid the groundwork for what would become Enrico Products. Our grater retains the smart features of Enrico’s original version, but the Enrico team has updated the design and materials to create a great modern kitchen tool with old world charm, a testament to the powerful diversity of the Enrico partnership that flows through everything we do. In the intervening years we have continued to build on Enrico’s legacy by developing new products that have the same sort of beauty and functionality as his original grater. We have sought out new materials and unique products to expand the Enrico offerings into a dynamic collection of tabletop, gourmet, gift, and decorative items. Each collection under the Enrico banner is made from what we’ve coined “eco-intelligent” materials - reclaimed woods, sustainable-yield lumber, materials that would have otherwise been tossed aside as refuse – and we strive to reduce environmental impact by using recyclable packaging and keeping waste to a minimum. We personally spend a lot of time working directly in the workshops and factories with which we do business across Asia, ensuring not only that the products are sound, but that the working conditions and wages are healthy and equitable. We work with our talented groups of artisans to create designs blending the raw beauty of the materials, the skills of the craftsmen, the eye of the designer, and the desires of our discerning customers. Like Enrico did so many years ago, we’re constantly working to bring our new ideas to fruition with thoughtfulness, beauty, and intelligent design.
