ACB-HYDROLOCK INNOVATION IN CONTINUOUS STERILIZATION PROCESS The French manufacturer of automatic sterilizers, HYDROLOCK, has developed the first equipment to sterilize as a continuous process products packed in soft pouches. Two machines have been built for Mexican companies producing baked beans and ready to eat meals for the American market. Both of the Mexican producers were looking for a fully automatic process to sterilize 200 pouches per minute. The challenge was to combine a newly designed holding system as part of the sterilizer along with the automatic loading/offloading of the pouches from the existing production line. The success of this innovative process was achieved in cooperation with a well reputed company specialized in 5 axes robot handling.

HALL

06 stand C 09-5

The robots pick up pouches from conveyors and place them accurately into the carrying trays. The trays are then piled up and slid into the sterilizer holders which clamp them and run the pouches through the sterilizer. After the full sterilization and cool down process the pouches are automatically offloaded and conveyed to the packaging area. This technology allows a high quality and consistent process without labor involvement as well as a tremendous reduction of energy consumption compared with traditional installations.

ANEOLIA EXOS: a complete solution for packaging integrity control Leak detection is a critical issue for industrial packaging. How can you control it? Good control of packaging integrity enables manufacturers to prevent customer returns, and for the customer to avoid a bad experience with the product. Better than detection, leak measurement provides a quantifiable reference, which can be used to improve processes. This measurement, combined with seal strength testing, is useful to optimize the parameters of packaging machines: sealing time, etc. Understanding that manufacturers need to be able to quantify the leakage of their packaging, Anéolia developed a unique solution: EXOS. This system is user friendly, and doesn’t require water presence in production unlike the water bath. While the water bath test detects only 30% of 75μm leaks (F2096 ASTM standard), EXOS can go down to 5µm. Furthermore its fordable system

Exos is supplied with complete traceability software, and can be easily connected via its Ethernet and USB ports. Exos also exists in an automatic version: OXYLOS. Customer reaction: «The equipment is particularly userfriendly for our front line operators with easy to follow touch panel display. The built in mass-storage records provide quick and easy traceability on test results and trends.» Paul A., quality specialist for the world leader in snack food, UK.

the most afof performance.

Exos system works on the principle of flow metering. A needle is inserted through the film and air is injected into the packaging. A relative over pressure is applied in the packaging (from 20 to 500 mbars depending on the packaging). If there is a leak, Exos will continuously inject air into the package to maintain the overpressure. This flow characterizes the leak rate of the packaging (ml/min), and also the pinhole size equivalent in micron. Exos can also be combined with the gas analysis O2 & CO2 for modified atmosphere packaging. With this option you can combine gas analysis, leak test, and burst test in one manipulation. And you use only one package sample.

ANEOLIA Packaging Integrity Control: methods for leak measurement and detection Food industries are constantly concerned by the correct preservation of food up to delivery to the final consumer. Their requirements concern: • Mechanical resistance (seal strength, crushing, …) • Chemical resistance (permeation to water vapor or gas, migration, light, breath, …) • User friendliness (easy opening, presentation of product, …) Technical specifications for packaging have to consider all these requirements: economical, social, environmental, but also food safety issues. Apart from food quality preservation, packaging participates to food safety. To guarantee food safety, the manufacturer has to control the packaging integrity, at least during the whole shelf life defined by the producer.Expected performances vary, depending mainly on product microbiology development over time. Dry products are for example less problematic than dairy products, or meat based products. There are many preservation technologies: • Vacuum packaging • Modified atmosphere packaging • Appertized products All these techniques meet the demand for extended product shelf life. But this extension can only be guaranteed by checking packaging’s integrity (leak detection, gas analysis, seal inspection…) The acceptable leak size depends on the level of preservation to reach. For comparison: • Virus size : 0.1µm • Bacteria : 1µm • Red globule : 10µm • Hair : from 40 to 80µm Various methods for measurement and detection are available to control the quality of seals. The most relevant ones are (ordered by increasing sensitivity): • Water bath test (bubble test) : - Detection limit : >75µm - Pros: non destructive methods, leak localization - Cons: detection capacity limited by water depth and pressure in the up chamber. No metrological measurements, lowest leak detection sensitivity. • Trace gas measurement - Detection limit : >30µm (dependent to time, and Package volume/Chamber volume)

HALL

06 stand C 10-3

- Pros: non destructive method, leak localization possible by acquisition of gas sniffer. - Cons: potential additional costs (CO2, He, H2, to be incorporated). Leak can be hidden by ambient pollution overtime, no detection in case of big leakage. • Measurement by package palpation instrumentation: - Detection limit : >50 µm (depending on mechanical resistance) - Pros: Non destructive method, easy to set up on line - Cons: No metrological measurements to estimate gas exchanges over time • Pressure variation - Detection limit: >30 µm (temperature dependent for long tests; film surface dependant) - Pros : non destructive or destructive depending on the packaging resistance - Cons: Leak measurement value can hardly be transposed in Pa.m3/s unit to evaluate the gas exchange rate (you need to know the exact volume of your package). • Flow through measurement : - Detection limit: >5µm - Pros: Easy to set up, real measurement in Pa.m3/s units, real time flow measurement, adjustable to every kind of packaging, can be combined with external leak sniffer for leak localization. Can be considered as non destructive if combined with the gas analysis test for Modified Atmosphere Packaging. - Cons: Destructive method in standard use, cycle time dependent on the volume to be pressurized. The choice of the accurate method has to be balanced between leak testing performance, test cycle time, and price of the technology. With a destructive method using flow through systems (expressed in sccm, or in Pa.m3/s), you can have a good estimation of the leak rate levels. You can in this case evaluate the gas exchange rate through the barrier film, and you can determine accurately your expected shelf-life. These measurements have to be combined with permeation estimation and gas analysis for modified atmosphere packages. The devices using flow through technology can help qualify other leak measurement tools that the industrial would have chosen. For the records, the limit of detection of water baths is a 30% probability to see a pinhole of 75µm (ASTM F2096).»

ARCIL FFS conical cups by Arcil for Müller brand TARA Dairy, the third-largest dairy brand in Israel, and its partner MÜLLER have chosen a Form-Fill-Seal (FFS) line by Arcil to increase the manufacturing capacity for yoghurt and desserts in the new factory in Netivot, Israel. According to Engineering Vice-President at Tara, Ronnie Sitton: «We have been making and distributing Müller’s yoghurt in Israel for a number of years. We have a close relationship with Müller, which allows us to benefit from its engineering know-how on products and production lines. In conjunction with the design of the new factory, we strongly and urgently needed to expand our manufacturing capacity. We choose Arcil’s FFS technology for the production flexibility it adds and the lower costs it involves in terms of materials.» A premium conical cup for a premium product Müller’s product is a creamy, fruit yoghurt packaged in conical, thermoformed cups. The label made with glossy coated paper is applied during production on the labelling station based on Arcil’s patented rotary mold principle. The mixed-paper lid is heat-sealed before the packs are cut into four, which favours bulk buying on shelves for families or personal consumption. The cups are then placed in a box by a Tecmapack boxing machine integrated by Synerlink, Arcil’s engineering department. The efficiency of the full line offers a production capacity of 20,000 cups/ph, including technical downtime. A machine for two products Depending on production needs, the same line produces two different products in two cups with different shapes and materials. The filler is integrated on the FFS machine by Dosil, Arcil’s filling business unit. It can be sterilized on site (SIP- 3 bars at 130°C) and allows for very quick production changes. This way Müller’s creamy fruit yoghurt is filled into a conical PS cup with a paper label. However, the line also packages a creamy dessert with a Chantilly cream topping in a PS cup with an OPS label, both of which are transparent. This is the FFS reproduction of the Moo cup, one of Tara’s emblematic brands, and formerly was a preformed product. For this project, Dosil developed specific filling nozzles to design the small Chantilly flowerlike topping. A great success for the client’s image and in terms of product differentiation!

GEBO CERMEX A new version of the multi-function FlexiCase® top loading case packer presented at Interpack FlexiCase® combines forming, loading and sealing functions to pack products that are difficult to accumulate into RSCs. Launched in 2012 specifically for the home and personal care markets, the range is designed to optimise the threefold requirement of speed, footprint and packaging size range. At Interpack 2014, Cermex will be presenting version 2 as a world premiere. It is even more compact and integrates lightweight tooling and a new robot gripping arm. Even greater space saving, in terms of both footprint and height The compactness of the end of line is a differentiating factor for the industries targeted. The FlexiCase® range relies particularly on vertical forming to reduce threefold the space necessary for this function. In this second version of the case packer, the sealing operation has been optimized in order to reduce the overall machine length by 1100 mm. The addition of a new compact robot to the Cermex range of gripping arms offers a significant advantage where low ceilings are a major constraint. Indeed, the new compact gripping arm barely extends beyond the machine frame, making installation easier. More compact in all its dimensions, the new FlexiCase® ensures the packaging line is aesthetically-pleasing and uncluttered. Lightweight, secure gripping tooling Depending on their shape, length and resis-

tance, plastic bottles of shower gel, shampoo, washing liquids or detergents are handled using grippers, membranes or suction cups. The gripping heads, previously made of steel parts and small tooling, are now available in carbon and aluminium, in a beehive structure, reducing head weight by 30% on average, without compromising secure gripping and product integrity. This substantial weight saving brings additional flexibility in the optimization of FlexiCase®, which can work with lighter and quicker gripping arms, consuming less energy. - For an equivalent number of products gripped, inertia during loading trajectories is reduced thanks to the lighter combined weight of the head + products, which contributes to equipment longevity (reduction in wear and tear). - For an equivalent payload handled by the gripping arm, the reduction in the tooling weight also potentially increases the number of products that can be gripped at a time, as well as increasing the speed. In addition, the mechanical design of the dual-axis gripping head safety mechanism makes it more sensitive to any collisions (machine stopped quickly in order to prevent damage to the tooling). A wider choice of gripping arms FlexiCase® offers a constant level of performance and precision, whatever the payload, the required work envelope or the desired

HALL

13 stand C 47

speed, using a wide range of gripping arms. - A numerical axis gantry (AN), capable of handling payloads of up to 260 kg. - A new robot gripping arm, the ER20, manufactured by Cermex, presented as a world premiere at Interpack. With its 2 combined polar and Cartesian axes, this new robot contributes significantly to ensuring FlexiCase® ranks well in terms of speed, payload and layout criteria, as well as rendering the machine more compact. - A high-speed, compact gripping arm for light loads, efficient up to 30 cycles per minute. - An externally-sourced 6-axis polyarticulated robot, for maximum flexibility. “The efforts made to lighten tooling have brought two benefits: improved coverage of the various speed/payload scenarios and the possibility of using a more compact gripping arm. If we also consider the shorter configuration of the sealing function, it is clear that we are offering a more economic FlexiCase® unit in terms of space, energy consumption and maintenance”. Jean-Philippe Béduneau – Key Market Director for Home and Personal Care The new version of the multi-function top loading FlexiCase® case packer, fitted with Cermex’s new ER20 robot gripping arm, will be presented as a world premiere at the Interpack show in Düsseldorf.

LUCEO HALL

Vision control of food packaging: Luceo consolidates its technological advance in optical detection with a new generation of sensors Luceo will introduce a new generation of optical sensors to detect sealing defects with complete certainty for food packaging At the INTERPACK trade fair, Luceo Inspection Worldwide will present the latest major development of its ThermoSecure offering for the control of sealed packaging: a unique image acquisition and software processing system detects all types of defects in the sealing zone and reacts in real time to any sealing tool drift. Highlight the entire seal cavity, with unrivalled contrast quality The new smart electro-optical system developed and patented at the end of 2013 by Luceo can be used to perfectly create the entire sealing seam. The contrast quality obtained by this system very clearly renders all the defects in the sealing zone: lack of sealant, bubbles, folds, broken tray, presence of contaminant, etc. Easily interpretable images to make detecting defects more reliable A perfectly contrasted image, which shows the sealing seam in white and all the sealing defects in black, means that interpreting data is both simpler and more reliable.

05 stand E 26

This allows the control unit to work at higher rates with a minimum margin of error. Real-time control of sealing tool drift Another function provided by the new generation of Luceo sensors is realtime control of the sealing seam width and detection of any shrinkage that is too great, related to sealing tool drift. In this specific case, the control unit is also able to generate a process alert that allows the operator to act in real time to correct the problem and thus anticipate the appearance of defective sealing.

FOOD SAFETY

FOOD WASTAGE

SEALING: THE WEAK LINK

VISION CONTROL IS USED TO CURB SCRAP

Sealing is a critical control point in food security that is sometimes difficult to master, so full inspection via vision systems tends to be required on production lines.

A study conducted by the European Community in 2010* showed that 39% of foodstuffs were unnecessarily lost each year in production plants. This initial estimate, which will need confirmation by additional studies, poses not only the question of the role that manufacturers can and want to play in reducing food waste, but also that of increased competitiveness which could be generated by minimising their losses.

A vital critical point Tray or bag packaging conditioned in a modified atmosphere is becoming widespread in our daily life in response to our requirements for freshness, extended shelf life or simply practical considerations. The sealing of this packaging guarantees that it is hermetically sealed from the outside environment, irrespective of the technology used to create it. This sealing is both an essential safeguard against health risks, but also a link exposed to particular stresses throughout the product’s life cycle (crating, transport, and shelving). The slightest sealing defect is thus totally excluded as it could impair the primary function of the packaging, namely to protect the food from the plant to the plate. A complex process to control Unfortunately, industrial control of this critical point is still relatively complex. Sealing defects generated in the sealing zone can actually have several causes: the main ones being contamination of the sealing surface during filling and sealing tool drift, which generates folds, bubbles or partial lack of sealant. These defects expose manufacturers to a dual risk: economic risk concerning the scrapping of whole batches if the process is not continuously controlled, but also a brand image risk related to the possible marketing of contaminated or badly preserved products.   Towards a «control all» requirement for the consumer and improved control over the process for the manufacturer. To eradicate these risks, manufacturers must make their control procedures more reliable but also save and store their data to ensure perfect traceability for the product. These requirements are driving the development of full control of the manufactured products that only vision inspection systems can perform at satisfactory rates. However, manufacturers will certainly not be happy with post-control of their products for very long and will be looking for solutions to improve control of their sealing process. This is why the vision inspection systems must go even further in the future and interact upstream with the machines to enable real time self-checking of the sealing tool.

Scrap related to a packaging or label defect: unnecessary losses Today, the food industry cannot avoid considering the visual aspect of the product; the consumer is still too greatly attached to it. So it is impossible to avoid selection, and consequently a certain amount of loss, in raw materials. But as soon as the product corresponds to customer expectations, any scrapping in the upstream packaging process is an unnecessary loss. So this stage in the manufacturing process must be the focus of efforts to prevent waste. Vision inspection: non-destructive inspection in real time The quality control of packaging is conducted mostly by statistical sampling. This type of control has two main disadvantages in relation to food waste: it is a destructive control as the samples taken will be lost, and it is also a sequential control that can lead to production being isolated for several hours, which must then be reprocessed or scrapped. However, with vision inspection, each packaging item is individually controlled and the defective products are removed one by one from the production line. Real time inspection also identifies any drift in the production tool and is used to act rapidly to correct the problem.   White zone control to allow for repackaging When the product is compliant but the packaging is defective: must it be scrapped? Unfortunately, manufacturers do not have the choice when the defect is noticed outside the white zone. This is why the vision inspection machines can be adapted and now have a hygienic design so they can be installed more upstream in the production line. Defective packaging can thus be ejected within the white zone, which means that the products they contain can be saved. *Preparatory study on food waste across EU 27 - Bio Intelligence Service - October 2010

NEWTEC BAG PALLETIZING TIME TO CHAIN Maximising the success of value-adding chains with HAVER & BOECKER Industry 4.0, the fourth industrial revolution, is heralding intelligent, networked production systems. This will mean more efficient, rapid and flexible work processes in companies. The new era requires changes in and optimisation of the value-adding chains of all producers in the sectors of cement, building materials and minerals, chemicals, foodstuffs, petroleum and gas. Standardising and modularising many individual process steps is required. HAVER & BOECKER is taking on this challenge and is welcoming visitors under the motto: “Time to chain” to INTERPACK in Düsseldorf, Stand D08, Hall 12, May 8-14, 2014. HAVER & BOECKER and its leading technology brands of IBAU HAMBURG, BEHN + BATES, FEIGE FILLING and NEWTEC BAG PALLETIZING conceptualise customised solutions for transporting, stocking, filling, packing and palletising cement, building materials, minerals, chemicals and liquid and pasty products. At INTERPACK, HAVER & BOECKER will show how the innovative machine technologies of different brands can be linked together to form complete systems. This allows modules within the customer’s process to be maximised, or total systems to be newly defined and set up. “Time to chain” also means that it is time for new service concepts in the world of HAVER & BOECKER. Initiated by the fifth generation of management taking the helm at the family-managed company early this year, HAVER & BOECKER aims to mesh the linking of HAVER technologies more strongly with the success of its customers through new and innovative services. HAVER & BOECKER offers an automation platform that enables the networking of various process steps within the customers‘ production process. This allows the chance to optimise the entire product flow by using countless analysis possibilities. HAVER & BOECKER presents the FFS ADAMS® as a main feature exhibit. This FormFill-Seal system fills powder-type products – even those with difficult flow properties – into air-tight and compact PE bags. Now that the ADAMS® has established itself in the building products industry, customers in the chemical and foodstuffs industries are discovering its advantages. BEHN + BATES, the specialist in the foodstuffs sector, seamlessly integrates systems into the process chain of foodstuff manufacturers. BEHN + BATES introduces the INTEGRA® system in addition to the ADAMS® technology. INTEGRA® technology allows

dust-free and reliable filling of loose, bulk products into valve bags using the integrated Plug & Pack concept. Innovative palletizing technology is offered by NEWTEC BAG PALLETIZING. The challenge for the palletizing specialist is the production of clean and compact stacking of filled bags that is in precision harmony with the upstream packing process. To represent the performance capability of the system, NEWTEC BAG PALLETIZING is presenting the 1800 palletizing series. FEIGE FILLING is now introducing new paths when it comes to filling liquid and pasty products. The new generation PAILFILL® will be making its debut at INTERPACK 2014! Thus FEIGE will be launching a variable bucket-filling system onto the market. The concept offers a high level of flexibility through the use of individual modular planning, an intuitive operator concept, and simpler possibilities for expansion. HAVER analysis machines, analysis sieves, and the revolutionary CPA technology are yet another essential link within the HAVER customers’ process chain. Exact knowledge of the product’s properties is critical for quality control during and after the process. And to allow customers to precisely measure the efficiency of their value adding chains, HAVER & BOECKER offers them a complete range of analysis technology.
