EVENING NEWS DIGEST: 12 MARCH 2018 INDIA WON "BEST EXHIBITOR AWARD" AT ITB – BERLIN   

India has won the "Best Exhibitor Award" at ITB – Berlin. „ITB- Berlin World Tourist Meet‟ was convened at Berlin, Germany from 7th March to 10th March, 2018. Minister of State (Independent charge) for Tourism K. J. Alphons along with couple of Tourism Ministry officials, represented India. More than 100 countries participated in the ITB- Berlin meet with their respective Tourism Ministers. India's Incredible India (Ministry of Tourism) presented a short film named "Yogi of the Racetrack" in the meet. The said short film has got 3.2 million hits in 60 hours.

NCRB RELEASES “CITIZEN SERVICES” MOBILE APP  

National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on the occasion of its 33rd Inception Day, on March 11, 2018 (Sunday) released “Citizen Services” Mobile APP, at Mahipalpur, New Delhi. Citizen Services App: This single App is a bouquet of various essential police related services to the citizen. The App can be used by citizen for various services such as Complaint Registration & Status Check, View FIR Detail, SOS – Stay Safe, Locate Police Stations, Vahan-Samanvay, Emergency Contact List, Police Stations Telephone Directory etc.

FIRST-EVER INDO-FRENCH KNOWLEDGE SUMMIT CONCLUDES 

  

The first ever Indo-French Knowledge Summit ended successfully with a landmark agreement on mutual recognition of educational qualifications between the two countries. This agreement will go a long way in boosting the educational relationship between the two countries will encourage mobility of students from both the countries. The two-day summit was held in New Delhi and coincided with the state visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to India. The summit was organized by the French Embassy in India and co-hosted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The Knowledge Summit is the First Franco-Indian Summit for university, scientific and technology cooperation with the broader objective to design a roadmap of Franco-India cooperation for the next five years, in collaboration with companies.

CHINA'S PARLIAMENT ABOLISHED TWO-TERM LIMIT FOR THE PRESIDENT   



China's Parliament abolished the decades-old two-term limit for the President, allowing Xi Jinping to remain as the country's leader for life. The constitutional changes were passed in Beijing by the annual sitting of the National People's Congress - the country's legislature with two-third majority. Set for his second five-year term as President this month, 64-year-old Xi, the most powerful leader in recent decades heading the ruling Communist Party (CPC) and the military, will now be the first Chinese leader after the founder chairman Mao Zedong to remain in power lifelong. Of the 2,964 delegates, only two voted against the change, while three abstained.

ADB, ISA INKS PACT TO PROMOTE SOLAR ENERGY DEPLOYMENT IN ASIA & PACIFIC   

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the International Solar Alliance (ISA) has signed a cooperation arrangement to promote solar energy deployment in Asia and the Pacific. The cooperation envisages solar power generation, solar based mini-grids and transmission systems for integrating solar energy into grids. The ISA and the ADB would also cooperate on knowledge sharing and developing technology roadmaps for the promotion of solar energy, the multilateral lending agency.

NAVJOT KAUR CLIMBS TO NO 2 IN UNITED WORLD WRESTLING RANKINGS   

Asian champion Navjot Kaur was rewarded for her recent gold medal effort as she became world No 2 in the women‟s 65 kg category during the latest rankings released by the United World Wrestling. Navjot became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the recent Asian Championship in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Olympic champion Sakshi Malik is currently world No 4 with 18 points in the 62 kg category.

PM MODI, FRENCH PRES IDENT INAUGURATES SOLAR PLANT AT MIRZAPUR   

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron have inaugurated Uttar Pradesh's biggest solar power plant in Mirzapur district's Chhanvey block. The prime minister and the French president pressed a button to energise the solar panels. The solar plant will generate 15.6 crore units of electricity annually, which is about 1.30 crore units per month. About ISA: The International Solar Alliance is a treaty based international inter-governmental alliance of 121 solar resource rich countries lying fully or partially between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. The aim of the alliance is to promote solar energy and reduce the use of fossil fuels in sunshine-rich countries.

BENGAL TOPS IN RURAL JOB SCHEME, T.N. IS SECOND    

West Bengal has become the best performing State both in terms of allotting jobs and utilising funds under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). West Bengal generated more than 28.21 crore work days under the scheme so far in 2017-18 and spent more than ₹7,335.31 crore for it. Tamil Nadu occupied the second spot with 22.17 crore work days and spent ₹5,981.75 crore. Andhra Pradesh was third with 18.16 crore work days, and funds worth ₹5054.17 crore. Goa is ranked at the bottom of the list with 94,000 work days and spent funds worth ₹2.47 crore.

VIETNAM‟S NGUYEN HUONG GIANG CROWNED “MISS INTERNATIONAL QUEEN”  

Vietnam's Nguyen Huong Giang was crowned "Miss International Queen" in Thailand on Mar 9, 2018 at one of the world's top beauty pageants for transgender women. The winner fended off 26 competitors, from countries spanning Mongolia to Mexico, to clinch the coveted crown in the seaside town of Pattaya, where the popular contest has been running since 2004.

IN POST-CASTRO ERA, CUBA HOLDS ONE-PARTY VOTE FOR NEXT PRESIDENT    

Miguel Diaz Canel, the person expected to become the next president of Cuba, and Cuban President Raul Castro cast their votes on Sunday (March 11) in a one-party vote. Raul Castro, who succeeded his brother as president in 2008, is expected to remain at the helm of the powerful Communist Party while First Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel, 57, is expected to become president. Diaz-Canel, a party functionary since his youth, would be Cuba's first modern head of state who was born after the revolution and has no military history. More than eight million Cubans are eligible to vote and turnout is traditionally around 85 percent. While candidates on the slates are not required to belong to the Communist Party, the only legal party in Cuba, most does.
