Safety Week 2018

EVENT GUIDE & TOOLBOX TALKS

There’s no better way to reinforce a culture of safety in your company than bringing your team together for discussions and activities to learn more about jobsite safety. Need some ideas? This guide offers activities you can share during team meetings, daily huddles or at Safety Week events. Safety Week is a great opportunity to remind your teams about all aspects of jobsite safety. You are not limited to just focus on jobsite safety and we encourage you to add additional tips that are important to the work you do. How do I participate? 1. 2.

Lead efforts in your organization to participate in Safety Week May 7-11. Get buy-in top to bottom in the office. Join together to keep each other safe through educational and celebratory events. • Kick-off your day with safety via the Toolbox Talks safety resources enclosed. • Share the Safety Week 2018 ‘The Power of Safe Choices’ kick-off video. If we missed you in the final cut, feel free to post your Company video on your social channels and tag us to share with the broader Safety Week community. • Celebrate safety in your community. Safety Week is partnering with a range of program partners across the U.S. and Canada including the Texas Department of Transportation, LA Metro, Florida Department of Transportation, District Department of Transportation (Washington DC) and Infrastructure Ontario at signature events this year. We encourage you to set-up your own local event(s) to excite and engage your workforce. • Make a pledge to safety. Encourage event audiences to share how and why they make safe choices every day. This can extend to workers’ family and friends, too. Engage with us on social media and use Safety Week branded social templates for company page posts. Download our Social Media Toolkit to access these templates as well as preview content tocome from owned Safety Week social platforms.

Planning & Executing An Event 1. 2. 3.

Schedule an event. Choose a high-profile project site or host at your headquarters. We recommend a high-profile location that will garner participation from key internal stakeholders and local dignitaries. Invite local media. See our Media Relations Toolkit for guidance on how to partner with the reporters and editors in your area. Print signage to place onsite at your Safety Week kick-off event. We have a jobsite banner, a co-branded jobsite banner and pop-up templates available for usage. The pop-up banners will help frame your speaking podium for media opportunities. These are built to a 78” x 33.5” spec. You can work with a local vendor to print or we can connect you with the program partner event vendor used in past years.

Leverage VR training capabilities as a way to allow attendees to practice making safe choices, and see impact, in a safe way. If wearable technology is not available, consider other interactive content or training material that invites users to identify how they could make safe choices in different scenarios. Encourage craft workers, families, friends, employees and leaders to share why and how they make safe choices everyday. Call on them to submit this information via their phone or online using a visual that represents the “why” (e.g. their child or parent) and copy to articulate the “how” (e.g. double-check all equipment at start of day) paired with the hashtag #MySafetyPledge and #SafetyWeek. Pledges can be submitted directly through our website and shared to Facebook or Twitter as well as the hashtag #SafetyWeek will be aggregating all Safety Pledges from Twitter and Instagram into our interactive, digital mosaic. We recommend having a point person on-site with technology such as an iPad or a Company work phone to facilitate pledge conversation online. Note: Instead of a physical banner for safety pledges, we’ve gone digital to create an interactive mosaic component on the www.constructionsafetyweek.com site to show the collective impact choices make on the community, region and industry as a whole. An example of an individual’s post that feeds into the overall Safety Week 2018 image is below.
