FLAGSTAFF Whether you’re fascinated with space, or just like to stare up at the stars, Flagstaff has an unparalleled view of the night sky. Named the world’s first International Dark-Sky City, you can take advantage of unfettered stargazing at Lowell Observatory on Mars Hill. While there, visit the telescope that was used to discover Pluto in 1930.

VERDE VALLEY The Verde River flows through the vacation wonderland of the Verde

Verde River

Valley. Welcomed by the Verde Canyon Railroad as the train chugs along its banks, the Verde flows by the Copper Art Museum in Clarkdale, Old Town Cottonwood and through Dead Horse Ranch State Park. Along the trip, it passes vinyards and wineries, and Out of Africa Wildlife Park in Camp Verde, before continuing on a 41 mile stretch as a designated Wild and Scenic River.

High above the pepper patch you will find Mt. Graham International Observatory, which includes the Large Binocular Telescope, the most powerful telescope on earth.

PRESCOTT Prescott is home to the world-renowned Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, where many of the nation’s top aeronautical scientists and engineers are trained. Back on the ground, the Granite Dells are an exceptionally picturesque geological feature surrounding Watson Lake. Explore by kayak or hike along the Peavine National Recreation Trail.

Fort Apache – Nohwike’Bagowa

WHITE MOUNTAINS Arizona’s White Mountains offer cooler weather, an abundance of wildlife, outdoor recreation activities and cultural attractions. At the top of that list is Fort Apache. Constructed between 1874 and 1932, the Fort Apache Historic District encompasses the original site of the Fort Apache military post. Fort Apache was a major outpost during the Apache wars (1861-1886) and remained a military post until 1922.

GLOBE The Theodore Roosevelt Dam stands 280 feet high and spans 723 feet across the Salt River Canyon. At the time that it was completed, it was the tallest masonry dam in the world. Lake Roosevelt was created behind the dam and can hold more than 1,000,000 acre feet of water.

COOLIDGE The Casa Grande Ruins Monument preserves the largest

prehistoric Hohokam farming village and “Great House.” Created as the nation’s first archeological reserve in 1892, the site was declared a National Monument in 1918.

Tonto Natural Bridge State Park, and the mountain towns of Pine and Strawberry are situated just below the Rim, and once you climb atop, you’ll find tall Ponderosa Pines, cool mountain lakes and no shortage of views.

YUMA The Ocean-to-Ocean Bridge was a ciritical link in joining the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans via highway. The bridge was built across the Colorado River between Yuma, Arizona and Fort Yuma, California in 1914, and was the only vehicle bridge across the river for 1,200 miles.
