Calling all members! Have you, your partner or any older LGBT* person you know, had experience of using domiciliary care services or been a resident of a care home? If the answer is YES – please get in contact with us. Opening Doors London is aware that some older LGBT* people have experienced prejudice and blatant disregard for the rights and wellbeing of older LGBT* service users/residents – and would like to work with service providers to address this. We are teaming up with Thinking Violets, an independent television production company, to develop a documentary highlighting the issues around this subject and we are reaching out to care homes and domiciliary care providers to provide training and consultancy. So if you have a story to tell – whether good or bad please contact Alice: [email protected]

Wednesday 1st February

Mixed Exercise Walk with Clive: Bacon and Leather, Pendrells Oak Brekkie and Leather Lane Market Prowl “Oddly, 300-year old Leather Lane Market has nothing to do with the leather trade – the name comes from a local merchant centuries ago called Le Vrunelane. Running between Chancery Lane and Clerkenwell Road between 10am and 2pm Monday to Friday, this weekday market wields a wide array of produce from fruit and veg to well, leather goods.” Look out for: Penderels Oak pub; St Alban The Martyr Church; Chancery Lane shops; market stalls and Hatton Garden. Meeting time: 11am Food plans: Pendrel’s Oak Weatherspoon to meet for a hot drink or breakfast if wanted. (Breakfast £4.89 - £5.89. Free refill filter coffee/tea £1.35).

I recruit, induct and train volunteers for ODL. When someone needs a volunteer or volunteers for a group, an event of for befriending for example, they ask me and I recruit people. I also keep all the records up to date and carry out the background checks that we have to run. I am passionate about creating environments that support people in general and in particular older LGBTQ people. This involves recruiting the right people to help us, engaging with our members, many of whom also volunteer for us, and aware that people’s contributions all make a difference. We have a very diverse group of volunteers and I am delighted that this diversity is at the very heart of our organisation I am proud that the trans and gender nonconforming swimming group TAGS that I helped set up with my friend Roberta Francis, won the ASA David Sparkles Innovation Award in 2016. I am proud of my achievements working in far and distant places around the world, and most of all I am proud of my children!

Walk start time: 12pm Meeting location point: Pendrel’s Oak Weatherspoon 283–288 High Holborn, London WC1V 7HP - opposite Sainsbury’s and sited midway between Holborn and Chancery Lane on the Lincoln’s Inn side of High Holborn. It is better to take a short walk downhill from Holborn Station. We will meet on seats facing Sainsbury’s. NB Buses routes along High Holborn Tube Bus Stop P for 521, 8 and 243. Check TFL but it’s a short walk. Miles: 1 to 4 depending on the weather End location point: Possibly returning via Farringdon Station or Chancery Lane. Central London so numerous buses whenever you wish. No booking necessary. Just turn up

changed when she is secretly recruited to join the U.K.’s growing suffragette movement. Galvanized by the outlaw fugitive Emmeline Pankhurst, Maud becomes an activist for the cause alongside women from all walks of life, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State. Written, shot and acted with a riveting, hot-blooded urgency that reminds you the struggle it depicts is not only an on-going one – but one which shakes up this most well-behaved of genres with a surge of civil disobedience.”

“New best friends Michael and Joseph reckon they can do better than what’s on offer in the London gay disco scene of 1981.So one on the decks, one on the lights, they build their own underground club, where devotees can escape the racism, hardship and homophobia that still stalk the city’s streets. And it looks like they’re going to conquer the world until ambition, addiction and the dawning onslaught of AIDS threaten to tear them apart. At a time when nightclubs are being closed across the capital and rampant gentrification is sweeping away LGBT pubs and bars, We Raise Our Hands In The Sanctuary tells its uplifting story with drama, contemporary dance and the club sounds of the 1980s. It’s a celebration of the crucial importance of queer spaces and the power of gay friendship.”
