Events Programme September to October 2015

Celebrating Older People’s Day

Introduction

Welcome to the Events Programme for Older People’s Day 2015 Introduction by Kate Davies, Chair of East Sussex Seniors’ Association (ESSA) This is the 8th year of running a programme of events to mark and celebrate Older People’s Day in East Sussex – and each year it gets bigger and better! Our theme this year is ‘Full of Life’ and you will find many opportunities and ideas for enjoying life to the full in this booklet. You may want to have a go at something new, like walking football, or virtual cycling. We also have information and health fairs, history talks, lots of walks, cooking demos, singing, dancing, films and much more. Most events are FREE to attend, and often include complimentary refreshments. There are FREE taster sessions and open days – and many of the county’s leisure centres are running a special offer of just £1 on some of their sessions. See the middle section for details. All the events you can go along to on your own, take a friend or, if you belong to a club or group, come together, but do check about booking ahead. If you need help with transport, contact your local community transport group – details opposite, on page 3. Although this booklet lists events taking place in September and October, many of the organisations featured in these pages hold regular activities and events all year round. So if you see something that interests you, but you can’t make that date, then please do use the ‘Contact’ information to call the organisation and find out about any other activities it may be organising. We are always looking to see how we can improve the programme, so if you go to an event that has feedback forms, please do consider filling one in. We really value hearing about what you liked and any ideas for future activities. Enjoy! Note: Information in this booklet was correct at time of going to press. Please contact individual organisers to check details or visit the What’s On section of ESCC’s website for any additional or revised event information.

Leisure Centre activities We all recognise how taking part in physical activities can not only bring health benefits, but also be fun, sociable, and contribute to a general sense of wellbeing. Leisure centres around the county are supporting celebrations for Older People’s Day (OPD) by offering a special ‘taster rate’ on many of their sessions, so people aged 55 or over can take advantage of this offer to try out new activities. All the activities listed here are suitable for older people and are available for the special rate of just £1 (on production of a booklet or print out) for the fortnight around OPD i.e. Monday 28 September to Friday 9 October.* All centres have disabled access, and drinks and snacks are available at most centres either from vending machines or onsite cafes. Some sessions have limited spaces: we recommend you contact the centre in advance of your visit to see if you need to book a place (especially if the session is a class). *Some centres have a longer ‘special offer’ period – call your nearest centre to check details.
