RE-VIEW: ONNASCH COLLECTION

EVENTS PROGRAMME Throughout the autumn, Hauser & Wirth is honoured to devote all three of its London galleries to a presentation of works from the collection of Reinhard Onnasch. A celebration of Onnasch’s longstanding passion for art and collecting, ‘Re-View: Onnasch Collection’ is curated by Paul Schimmel, a post-war scholar and the newly announced Partner of Hauser Wirth & Schimmel. The exhibition focuses on the period between 1950 and 1970, which saw the birth of some of the most important artistic movements of the 20th century.

SCREENINGS AT THE ICA To coincide with 'Re-View: Onnasch Collection', Hauser & Wirth presents a series of documentaries at the ICA, focused on American and European post-war artistic movements and artists featured in the exhibition. Each screening is followed by a drinks reception Monday 28 October, 6.30 pm 'American Art in the 1960s' narrated by Barbara Rose, Michael Blackwood Productions, 1972 During this critical decade in American life, artists produced an explosion of artistic energy in the forms of Pop Art, Minimalism, Color Field painting, and hard-edged abstraction. This film examines the key figures of that decade including Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, and looks at the new methods and subject matter employed that mirrored the ups and downs of the boom years 'Claes Oldenburg: The Formative Years' narrated by the artist, Michael Blackwood Productions, 1975 Claes Oldenburg takes the viewer on a tour of his personal landmarks in this film, from the city of Chicago to his studio in New York, showing highlights of his artistic career such as the original fireplug which inspired his ‘Proposed Colossal Monument

for the End of Navy Pier, Chicago: Fireplug’. Rare black and white footage of his 1959 "Happenings" tells the story of the artist’s irreverent beginnings and artistic adventures

‘THE BROKEN TOY SCHOOL’: TALK AND SCREENING ON EDWARD KIENHOLZ

Monday 4 November, 6.30 pm

Monday 18 November, 6.30 pm

'The New York School' narrated by Barbara Rose, Michael Blackwood Productions, 1972

Colin Wiggins, Special Projects Curator at the National Gallery, reflects on Kienholz's subversive practice, with specific reference to his major exhibition at the ICA in 1971 and its impact on contemporary British art

American art came of age with a group of New York painters who became known as Abstract Expressionists. Struggling to break out of European styles, they aimed instead to express their own transcendental values that emphasised freedom, impulse, and instinct, favouring large-scale canvases with improvisational brushwork. Harold Rosenberg, author of the phrase "action painting," and fellow critic Clement Greenberg offer their insights on the period 'Robert Rauschenberg: Retrospective' Michael Blackwood Productions, 1979 This film presents important examples of the artist's diverse and extraordinary accomplishments, tracing his development from his student years and his earliest experiments to a retrospective of his work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York Institute of Contemporary Arts The Mall, London SW1Y 5AH

Wiggins curated the exhibition of 'The Hoerengracht' at the National Gallery in 2009 and this talk examines the enduring power of Kienholz’s sensationalist sculpture and installation through screenings of documentaries on the artist, including: 'Kienholz: On Exhibit', LA County Museum of Art Retrospective, 1966 'Kienholz: The Story of an Artist' G.E. Theater Television Show, c. 1961 – 1962 Institute of Contemporary Arts The Mall, London SW1Y 5AH
