I have been a shy introvert for as long as I can remember. I dreaded presentations in grade school, and it continued to be my worst nightmare in my adulthood. Although I got a little better through practice and preparation, I had difficulties answering curve-ball questions and I always felt disconnected from my audience when I spoke. It was frustrating that I could not share my thoughts and opinions sincerely with others. While doing some online research on how to become a more effective public speaker, I came across the “Speaking With Your Authentic Voice” class with Pamela Zimmerman. I immediately imagined a nerve-wracking public speaking course where I would stand at a podium and speak in front of an audience about things I did not really understand or know much about. So horrible and embarrassing! But then again, there will be so many more horrible and embarrassing moments in my future if I choose not to improve my public speaking skills now. Thinking it would be a perfect opportunity to practice in front of people I would never have to see again, I signed up. I thought about dropping the class several times out of cowardice, but I somehow made it to class. Looking back on it, I am so fortunate that I did not back out of this opportunity. I learned within the first 5 minutes that this class does not make you speak in front of big groups or throw crazy topics at you to ramble about. The class takes a very spiritual approach in teaching you how to remain focused on the present and to connect with others on a deep level while communicating, whether it’s with one person or to a large group of people. In one of the first exercises, we were paired up with a partner and were instructed to look at each other in the eyes in silence. Needless to say, maintaining eye contact with a stranger for 10 seconds felt like an eternity and it was uncomfortable for a shy person like myself. We then switched partners and were told that one of the partners could talk if they wanted, but the other partner would stay silent. To fill the silence, I briefly talked about how interesting this activity was, but went quiet after a few seconds, which became even more awkward than before. After switching partners a few times and doing the same thing, what initially felt like staring at a stranger in awkward silence and feeling like I have to say something, gradually began to

feel like I was simply being next to another human being who is just like myself. After about the 3rd or 4th round, I could tell that the others in the group were also starting to feel comfortable and relaxed. Going through the experience and realizing that they were also feeling uncomfortable and self-conscious made me feel a strong sense of empathy towards my fellow classmates, and that feeling of connection was key in helping me understand what it meant to speak to an audience. For the next activity, the whole class sat in a circle and we took turns looking at one person in the group as they talked about whatever that came to their mind. Surprisingly, this was comfortable and easy to do since there was no need to be intimidated by anybody in the group. We worked our way up to a point where each person would stand in front of the group and talk if they wanted or remain silent if not. When my turn came up, I was surprised to see that standing in front of the group was not at all uncomfortable since we built up the connection from our previous group and 1-on-1 activities. It was strange to be able to stand in front of a group of people and able to say whatever that came to my mind with ease. We continued to build out these types of activities until we were all comfortable with talking for three, five, and ten minutes. It was a life-changing experience to be able to show my true self in front of people I had just met, speak my mind openly, and be supported by my fellow classmates and amazing instructor. In our fast-paced lives, we often feel pressured to react right away when someone asks a question. We often speak just to fill the silence and don’t make an effort to connect with people, listen to their questions, or answer from our hearts. Since taking this class, I have noticed a huge difference, not only the way in which I speak to large groups of people, but also in the way I interact with individual people. The class taught me how to be mindful, present and connected, and helped me realize what it really means to connect with other people and to speak from my heart. I highly recommend this class to anyone. Angelina Marshall, Student of Personal Enrichment Program Speaking With Your Authentic Voice, see page 26 for course listing

LE ADERSHIP TR AINING

Q&A WITH DAN YEOMANS, BCCE FACULTY Great leaders are not born, they’re made. The process of becoming a truly successful and effective leader requires practice and the willingness to learn and grow. Dan Yeomans is a new instructor for our Business Programs who will be teaching a brand new leadership workshop coming this fall quarter. His background includes a thirty year career in the U.S. Air Force and time spent working as a Leadership Consultant at Microsoft. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge with him to Bellevue College Continuing Education. This workshop will be available for registration online Thursday, August 3. Until then, read our Q&A with Dan Yeomans and find out if a leadership class is right for you:

What is your background in leadership training? How will you use your experience in, The “Real” Keys to Effective Leadership? I have developed thousands of “business skill” workshops for multiple corporations and facilitated most successfully during my career. Whether the subject was influencing, negotiating, driving change, project management, etc. the core skill required to be successful was effective leadership.

What led you to teach at Bellevue College Continuing Education? I was introduced to Bellevue by a close friend and colleague, Bill Dow, who I worked closely with for many years as a Leadership Consultant at Microsoft Corporation. I quickly grew to appreciate Bellevue’s methodology and desire to enable corporate clients to succeed through quality and “applicable” training that can be applied on the job from Day one!

Who is a good candidate to take this course? Why? Anyone who wants to position themselves for success in the corporate environment. Anyone who has the title of leader, but looks behind them and sees few followers. Anyone who wants to improve their awareness of self, and learn how to better manage their actions to become more aware and improve relationships. Anyone who considers themselves already as a great leader—we’ll validate your perception—and perhaps—take you from great to greater.

What are the top three learning outcomes a student will gain? Our goals—in a short 12 hours:

During my 30 year career in the United States Air Force, I reached the highest enlisted grade. In that capacity, I was required to lead and manage thousands of Air Force professionals to perform critical missions with less than optimal equipment and force numbers. We succeeded.

• Improve your negotiating and influencing skills—key to effective leadership.

In my post Air Force life, I managed critical projects and processes for many key corporations and pride myself on the successes we achieved. At each step along the way, I kept my eyes open, squinted my ears to effectively listen, and experienced what worked— and oftentimes more importantly—what didn’t.

• Improve your ability to “effectively” drive commitment, solve problems, drive change, and reach the right decisions.

• Improve your ability to effectively communicate in a way that resonates, shows value, persuades, and overcomes key communications blockers.

• Understand your Emotional Intelligence—and improve.

Why are leadership skills important in the workplace and beyond? Every organization, corporate entity, and individual needs to assess who they are, what their driving passions are, and how can they go from good to great.

Without effective leadership, corporations and organizations fail to meet their full potential and/or fail altogether. Without effective leadership skills, relationships falter, and dreams remain simply dreams—never achieved.

What will the classroom experience be like – projects, activities, discussions, etc.? We will share the concepts, tap into the collective knowledge base of the group, and strive to better understand ourselves and others. By course completion, through discussion, activities, and deep thought—each attendee should leave with an action plan on how to get to where they want to be as a leader.

Why should someone sign up for the course? Every course has four levels of measurements to determine if success was achieved. • Level 1: Have Fun (You will) • Level 2: Learn Cool Stuff (You will) • Level 3: Apply Learnings (You will be motivated to do so) • Level 4: Business Value (You will become more self-aware, better manage yourself and relationships, and learn how to provide value to self and others)

What inspires you to teach this course? People: Most who attend continuing education course have a burning desire to improve themselves and their marketability. I strive to hopefully assist all in this journey in a way that makes a difference. Visit the Leadership & Management program to view upcoming classes.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: HOW THE TELOS PROGRAM FOR ACTIVE RETIREES ENHANCED MY LIFE Finding the TELOS Program In 2012, I started cutting back on my work. I was looking for something to do, and I knew I wanted to keep learning. I never was able to go to college. I put my husband through college and worked my entire life as bookkeeper/accountant. Finally, I wanted to have my chance. I looked at options around the Puget Sound, but most didn’t sound appealing because I wasn’t looking to get a degree to better myself or find a different job. I had heard about adult education programs, and I had heard my cousin talk about “OSHER,” so I began to research. Retirement programs came up, and TELOS came up. I learned that TELOS is part of BCCE, and I knew I had a BCCE catalog, so I looked it up and found the TELOS program. The catalog announced the class preview, so I thought, “That will be perfect for me. I can listen to some of the instructors and pick a class.” I listened to a variety and picked two classes that sounded interesting. They were also reasonably priced. Exploring the Classes During my first quarter with TELOS, I took a science class on carbon dating and a social science class on philosophy. Both were way out of my field and depth. I remember commenting to friends in both classes that they were speaking a language I didn’t understand. I had never heard words like, “Egalitarian” or “Carbon dating.” I thought, “Oh Edie, you are way out of your depth. This will never make sense to you. You’ve made a big mistake.” But, I just kept listening and took masses of notes. Soon the information started to click. I thought, now I know all of this stuff - I was so excited! I’m still that way – excited about learning. I have found myself in classes that, at first, were way over my head. Now I know it’s just that the concepts are all new to me and eventually, I will understand. The TELOS classes teach me how to think. I’ve taken a lot of history and enjoy it very much. I love when I learn

how something new that fits together with what I’ve learned in another class. When you fit two topics together, it gives you a better global view. I like history because it’s about storytelling, and scientific classes because of how things come together; probably because I didn’t take much in high school. Science classes have been particularly challenging and exciting. The science of music in the class “Hooks, Riffs, and Earworms” was about how to engineer and pull apart notes and music, and how the brain works. I had never thought about music that way. After my husband passed away, I actually gave up music. Now, I understand it was because it takes me back to very deep memories. Getting More Connected I got involved with the TELOS Student Organization (TSO) early on. I think the program is very important and spent a year with a focused group of long time Telos members developing committees, putting together a board, and later served as president, now serving my third year in a row. I take 3-4 classes per quarter and arrange TSO meetings on class days. I’m not usually a joiner, so I never thought I would be the person to step-in and help run a program like this. At our age, it’s nice to know we can learn something new. It makes a person feel empowered. Making good friendships, at this age, is not something you expect either. I never expected to find a cache of good, real friendships. The important parts of what I’ve gained have little to do with classes – though I love taking them – and more to do with meeting people of similar minds. We don’t talk about our aches and pains and the troubles of the world, although we do talk about politics! We’re more apt to talk about something we are learning in class. Continued on page 31

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: HOW THE TELOS PROGRAM FOR ACTIVE RETIREES ENHANCED MY LIFE This program has made me realize how much I truly love to learn; it’s intoxicating. I didn’t know I would love these things that much. Lots of people don’t realize I wasn’t a college grad, so I feel like I’m getting my college education through TELOS. It’s great because I get to only take the classes that I want to. I have some very smart friends, so the program has given me more interesting things to talk about with them. The classes also make you a broader person. I wish I would have gone sooner; it would have made me a broader person earlier in life.

Continuing with TELOS Baby boomers are retiring, so there’s nothing but growth here. All areas are being expanded. The program is always looking for people who have been instructors. A lot are so thrilled to get in front of us because it’s the first time they’ve really been listened to. We want to hear what they have to say, which is important for instructors. They get a lot of joy from teaching these classes. Education is not just about learning a trade; it’s about expanding horizons in your mind. I also feel as though I’ve become a more of a well-rounded person. I have a rich history and am blessed in many areas with an interesting life. TELOS has added another dimension, and made it more colorful. I’m grateful to the program and the people who have done this before me.

S TUDENT SPOTLIGH T: LEE RIEFBERG GE TS INSPIRED BY NE W L ANGUAGES My first BC CE language class was ASL 1 in July 2015. It wasn’t my first CE class, but it was my first language class at BC and since high school Spanish. I ended up taking ASL 1-5, a conversational ASL class, and most recently, German 1. I wanted to learn ASL for arguably unconventional reasons. I regularly find myself in loud environments and some friends and I thought learning ASL would be helpful. Thanks to the classes at BC and BC’s ASL club’s regular meetups, this initial interest blossomed into an insatiable love of languages. I really enjoy connecting with people via the medium of language. Hence when German 1 aligned with my schedule, I went for it. My favorite things about BC CE: time, location, and the intimate learning environment. While ASL 1, for example, was a larger class, by the time I got to ASL 5, five or six students was the norm. This means more individual attention and deeper connections with other students and the teacher. Amanda Layton was flexible in her lesson plans and happy to adapt in-class activities to meet our needs. My favorite activity to date has been interpreting music – I was able to sign my favorite song at the end of the ASL 5. No other school in the area offers the same selection of introductory-to-advanced classes, all at convenient times and locations, and at such reasonable prices. I intend to register for classes for as long as I can. Lee Riefberg, Student, World Languages
