YEARS OF
EXPLORATION
DEAR EXPEDITIONERS, It’s 25 years since our founders, Greg and Margaret Mortimer, chartered an ice-strengthened, Russian research vessel to explore the Antarctic Peninsula with close friends and fellow adventurers.
At each landing, Greg and his team carefully sketched mud-maps listing the anchorage, best place to go ashore and the wildlife they encountered – often the first people to do so. That thrill of discovery led us to pioneer ship-based adventures, featuring camping, climbing, sea kayaking, scuba diving and polar snorkelling. We’ve now explored around the globe, from the European Arctic to Australia’s Kimberley Coast, the Russian Far East to Ecuador's Galápagos Islands. What remains unchanged is our deep love and respect for the planet’s wilderness and our belief that we pay homage by treading softly, watching, listening and recognising the global forces at play. And that small is beautiful. This means a maximum of 54 passengers, so you enjoy a relaxed atmosphere on board where it's easy to meet your fellow travellers and expedition team, experience longer – and often more – landings, and appreciate greater flexibility to reach unique sites not accessible to larger ships. If you’ve travelled with us before, you know how easy it is to feel part of the Aurora family. If you are about to join us for the first time, you’ll quickly discover that everyone, from our travel experts in our head office to our friendly onboard team ready to share their passion and knowledge, is focused on showing you the adventure of a lifetime. Though a quarter of a century has passed since our first voyage, our desire to bring you new destinations and experiences burns as brightly as ever. Should you go ashore to find someone with a sketchpad and pen, it’s either a fellow adventurer with artistic inclinations, or your expedition leader gleefully recording a new site for us to explore. We look forward to welcoming you aboard.

ABOUT AURORA EXPEDITIONS
When Aurora Expeditions co-founders Greg and Margaret Mortimer joined an audacious 1988 expedition to sail a yacht to Antarctica, then attempt the highest peak in Antarctica’s Admiralty Mountains, neither could have predicted how it would change their lives and that of thousands of others. Greg, renowned for making the first Australian ascent of Mt Everest, and Margaret, were soon organising Antarctic trips for friends and keen travellers, using small, ice-strengthened ships to reach places few, if any, had gone before. Over time the company pioneered a long list of ‘firsts’. It included both unique adventures and strong efforts to protect the environment.
THE JOURNEY BEGINS Greg and Margaret Mortimer establish Aurora Expeditions, with our first Antarctic voyage in early 1992. m
Twenty-five years later, that same spirit of small-group, intimate adventure is as highly valued as it was at the start. We are one of the only companies operating ships of 54 passengers or less. This allows us greater flexibility in changing ice and weather conditions, which often results in more landings. Come discover why so many of our expeditioners return again and again, drawn to our enthusiastic, expert team and most of all, a personal approach that warmly welcomes you into the Aurora Expeditions family.

POLAR SNORKELLING Still pushing the boundaries, we introduce snorkelling to our Arctic program after success in Antarctica.
Over the past 25 years, we’ve pioneered trips to the world’s wildest places, then introduced activities to guide you to the heart of nature. Aurora Expeditions' ‘firsts’ include camping out in Antarctica, kayaking amongst ice-floes, climbing to untrodden summits and scuba diving with seals – all from the comfort of our floating base camp. We’re just as proud of our pioneering itineraries; pushing through pack ice to East Antarctica, opening up the Russian Far East and Northeast Passage, discovering hidden pockets of Papua New Guinea and so much more. 5
j
WHAT SEPARATES US FROM THE PACK?
We believe that the best adventures are those shared with a small group of people, diverse in background, but like-minded in their love of wild places. To this end we keep our numbers down, mostly about 54 people. Our ships are small, strong and purposebuilt for the regions we explore. From the moment you step on board, you’ll be warmly welcomed by our expedition team as keen as you to get underway. You’ll soon discover they are passionate about sharing their expertise. From the history of exploration to indigenous cultures, the life cycle of wildlife to the whims of weather and ice, their stories will amaze you. We believe that the more you know about the destination, the richer your experience will be. On daily excursions, discover the wonder of ‘free range’ landings, allowed to sit quietly on your own, rather than being mustered along flag lines. And we’re committed to protecting the environment that sustains us. Aurora Expeditions has been at the forefront of developing visitor guidelines at both ends of the globe. Whether you join our expert guides to climb, kayak, scuba dive or snorkel; to focus on photography or simply soak it all in, you’ll quickly realise that we value every moment you spend with us and are determined to make the most of each and every one.
6
THE AURORA DIFFERENCE
k
SMALL SHIPS, SMALL GROUPS Our small, yet strong expedition ships are purpose-built for the conditions we encounter, give access to places larger ships can’t reach and offer a warm, informal atmosphere. With group sizes of no more than 54 people, you'll often enjoy more and longer landings. TWO TO THREE EXCURSIONS DAILY That’s just our minimum, more if time and conditions allow. We aim to be off the ship as much as possible, enjoying the wildlife and environment we encounter. Thanks to our experienced team, we often make landings when others are on ‘weather hold’. EXPERTS ENRICH YOUR EXPERIENCE Whether it’s the life cycle of polar bears, comparing Gwion and Wandjina rock paintings or details of Shackleton’s epic, information draws you deeper into the destination. Our expedition team are hand-picked specialists passionate about sharing their knowledge. There is no ‘us and them’ – only ‘all of us’. FLEXIBILITY IS OUR MANTRA Whenever the ice, wind and tides dictate, our expedition leader is quick to find alternatives. And if an amazing wildlife display catches our eye – think bubble-netting humpbacks or polar bears nursing cubs – we’ll take the time to stop and savour it.
l
ADVENTURE ADDS SPICE And bragging rights! Climb or scuba dive in Antarctica, sea kayak in the Arctic, snorkel with Galápagos sea lions. Prepare for a buzz!
A PERSONAL APPROACH You'll notice we use names, not booking numbers. From our Expedition Experts in our head office to your onboard team and crew, we take the time to listen to your requirements, answer your questions and share a laugh or two. We want you to feel important, because you are!

THE ENVIRONMENT IS OUR PRIORITY Aurora Expeditions helped draft environmental guidelines that are the world standard in polar regions. All expeditioners are briefed on how to enhance your visit without being intrusive. Our overall aim? To create lifelong environmental ambassadors during a time of rapid global change. CONSISTENTLY AURORA EXPEDITIONS Aurora Expeditions is owned and operated by an experienced and dedicated team who love what they do. All trips, whether our own or those run by carefullychosen local operators, are meticulously crafted to match our values and style.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP & PARTNERSHIPS
From its very first Antarctic voyage, Aurora Expeditions has played a prominent role in protecting the frozen continent. Initially, we shone light on the damage government programs were doing, then turned our attention to developing guidelines for responsible tourism. We became inaugural members of the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators (IAATO), then the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO). The guidelines we helped develop have since become the global standard for polar cruising. As we ventured into new regions, and with growing pressure from Climate Change and population growth, we realised we would need additional partners to increase public awareness of science and the environment. We found those who shared our environmental ethos and values, and were keen to share their hard-won knowledge, expertise and passion. We believe the sum of our efforts together will be greater than what we can achieve alone. As you travel with us, we hope you develop a deeper understanding of the natural world and become lifelong environmental ambassadors, aiming to preserve these wild places for generations to come.

OUR PARTNERS
k
INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ANTARCTIC TOUR OPERATORS
We were one of the seven founding operators of this organisation created in 1991 to advocate and promote safe and environmentally-responsible private-sector travel to Antarctica. Members subscribe to the principle that our planned activities will have no more than a minor or transitory impact on the environment. l
ASSOCIATION OF ARCTIC EXPEDITION CRUISE OPERATORS
We are proud to be a founding member of AECO. Established in 2003, it is dedicated to responsible, environmentally-friendly and safe tourism carried out with utmost consideration for local cultures. We regularly participate in the 'Clean Up Svalbard' program, helping to collect and remove coastal rubbish from this precious archipelago. BIRDLIFE AUSTRALIA
BirdLife Australia is dedicated to achieving outstanding conservation results for our native birds and their habitats. We’ve joined BirdLife Australia in highlighting the importance of different bird species worldwide. Our partnership focuses on educating birders and travellers alike on the diversity of bird and wildlife species in the polar regions. AUSTRALIA

A TYPICAL DAY WITH AURORA EXPEDITIONS
Wake to the wonders of a new day. Minke whales off the bow, a polar bear on pack ice, king penguins porpoising past or the growl of howler monkeys. Over the past 25 years, our expeditions have evolved a daily rhythm that connects us with the best of nature, wherever we might be. Our expedition leader entices us from sleep; morning and afternoon landings (if we’re on the move, illuminating lectures or nature’s passing parade); a ‘Happy Hour’ gathering to share tall tales and exchange photographs; after dinner, maybe a documentary, an impromptu party or another landing! We enjoy three healthy, delicious and very social meals daily, with snacks available in between. Whether setting off in Zodiacs, kayaks, canoes or on foot, we’re generally out for two to three hours in the morning and again in the afternoon, possibly squeezing in a short nap after lunch. Because our groups are no more than 54 people, we enjoy an informal, friendly atmosphere that defines our trips.

DAILY EXPLORATIONS AWAIT Most shore landings last from 2 to 3 hours, sometimes longer. In Antarctica there’s scope to ‘free roam’, everywhere else our guides lead the way on a variety of short or long guided walks, cruises or special activities. You’ve swotted up on Shackleton, watched Sir David’s documentaries and perhaps listened to friends rave about their own trip South. But nothing, absolutely nothing prepares you for your first iceberg, porpoising penguins or the soaring, ice-clad mountains that float like clouds above the sea.
For 25 years we’ve turned dreams into reality, exploring not just the Antarctic coast, but remote, historical islands in the Scotia Sea and the wildlife wonderland of South Georgia.
ANTARCTICA & SOUTH GEORGIA
TAKE A DEEP BREATH, CLOSE YOUR EYES AND SAY IT: “I AM GOING TO ANTARCTICA!”
During the Austral summer, our sturdy expedition ship plies the maze of protected channels on the Peninsula’s west coast, explores south to the Antarctic Circle and pushes through pack ice to reach fossil-rich islands in the Weddell Sea. Join us to visit historic huts, whaling sites, scientific bases and step onto the Antarctic continent. Best of all, come experience the drama of seabirds, seals, whales and penguins going about their lives in an environment like no other. Our South Georgia voyages traverse waters made famous by Shackleton’s epic of survival and land us on beaches absolutely packed with raucous king penguins, bellowing elephant seals and mischievous fur seals. As befits a company born of adventure, we also offer you the option to camp, kayak, climb, scuba dive, snorkel and improve your photography amidst the planet’s most spectacular landscape. The length of our voyages vary, as do itineraries, optional activities and dates. We’re happy to help you choose the voyage that best fulfills your dream, whether it be crossing the Antarctic Circle, photographing tabular icebergs in the Weddell Sea or experiencing a wildlife extravaganza on South Georgia island. Our trusty expedition ship is aptly-named and absolutely adored. Witness it cracking ice-floes in the Weddell Sea, slicing shimmering reflections in the Lemaire Channel or standing proud as mother ship welcoming back Zodiacs and kayaks from yet another adventure. Ice-strengthened, 71.6 metres long and capable of carrying 54 passengers, Polar Pioneer offers simple, yet comfortable accommodation. All cabins have outside portholes, ample storage and individual heating. Yet what sets it apart from other vessels is its size. ANTARCTIC ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES
Every day is an adventure in Antarctica, but even more so if you follow your passion and participate in an activity that you love. Over the past 25 years, we’ve introduced most ship-based activities to the polar regions. Not only are they a natural extension of our drive to explore, but they are fantastically exciting. Antarctic mountaineering, scuba diving, snorkelling, camping and kayaking take you to places few others will ever experience. Our qualified guides brief you properly before setting out, check your equipment and lead you with care. Some activities like scuba diving require significant previous experience, while others, like photography, camping and snorkelling, can be enjoyed by novices. Whether taking on the rugged Shackleton Crossing of South Georgia, scuba diving with penguins and seals, camping out on the ice or forging a route to an untrodden summit, you may discover as much about yourself as the wild places you’ve come to explore. Our Expedition Experts can help you choose the voyage best suited to your experience and desires.

EUROPEAN ARCTIC
VIKING CONQUEST, DELICATE TUNDRA FLOWERS. POLAR BEARS, PUFFIN NESTS. PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE INDEFINABLE ARCTIC.
Scotland is rich in history including early Christian, Viking and German incursions. We find seabirds aplenty and oddities like sunfish, standing stones and booming sea caves. We’re welcomed into communities for a wee dram and a lively craic. Sailing up the humpback highway we explore the spectacular Norwegian coastline, enjoying fishing villages and shutter-stopping coastal mountains before crossing the Arctic Circle. Sitting halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, the Svalbard archipelago is kissed by the warm Gulf Stream current. We’ll explore abandoned whaling settlements, look for polar bear, walrus, Arctic fox and reindeer, and revel in millions of migratory birds. Across the Greenland Sea, the east coast of Greenland is dominated by ice: glaciers sweep down from the world’s second largest icecap, massive sculpted bergs float from fjords backed by stark mountains and we go in search of the pack ice of the far northern reaches. This majestic land is also home to the Inuit and the animals that sustain them. With five fantastic itineraries, from late June to early September, our expedition ship Polar Pioneer is our floating basecamp for extraordinary adventures. Whether you’re keen to paddle, snorkel, trek or simply sit back and enjoy the wildlife and landscapes, we aim to make each day one you’ll never forget. Read our unique itineraries and then contact our Expedition Experts to discuss your options. Call +61 2 9252 1033 or email

Polar Pioneer is the ideal ship for Arctic exploration. Its small size means it can get you into places larger ships can’t reach and with a maximum of only 54 passengers on board, provides a warm, friendly atmosphere. Best of all, its ice-strengthened hull means we can push deeper into pack ice, often getting close views of polar bears or entering fjords when most other ships turn away. Our Russian captain, his officers and crew are trained in the conditions we encounter and are among the most experienced high-latitude sailors in the world.

Wake to the warm stirring of a tropical breeze. You’ve come to explore Australia’s oldest, most remote and spectacular coastline, so best to get an early start.
KIMBERLEY COAST
EXPLORE AUSTRALIA’S OLDEST, MOST REMOTE AND SPECTACULAR COASTLINE.
You may be trekking to witness rock paintings depicting one of the world's oldest cultures, taking an adrenalinepumping Zodiac ride through 'horizontal waterfalls' or getting sprayed by cooling falls of the vertical kind – possibly the highest in Western Australia. At sea you watch for dugongs, sea turtles, sharks, dolphins and manta rays. On shore it might be Merten’s water monitors (big lizards), wallaroos, wallabies or dingos. With more than 140 bird, 70 mammal and 30 reptile species, there is plenty to see and photograph. For nearly two decades we’ve pioneered voyages to explore the coastline between Broome, Western Australia and Darwin, Northern Territory. From the Lacepede Islands, home to some of the world’s largest seabird rookeries, to the newly-proclaimed whale sanctuary in Camden Sound; from the maze of 3000 islands to rivers deeply incised into ancient sandstones impossibly folded and spectacularly serene. Thanks to our expedition ship Coral Expeditions I and her purpose-built landing craft, The Explorer, and our hand picked expedition team keen to share their knowledge and explore new places, there’s no better way to discover the Kimberley coast. Add our voyage Across The Top, which combines the world-renowned art centres of Tiwi Islands and remote Wessell Islands, a Champagne toast at the tip of Cape York and spectacular snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef – now that’s the trip of a lifetime!

On 28 June 1987, Mike and Susan Cusack unloaded supplies and equipment from a small barge onto the banks of a tidal creek on the remote Kimberley coast, then trekked inland through spinifex and up dry creek beds to Kunmunya, an abandoned Presbyterian mission. They had been chosen from 500 couples who’d applied to Australian Geographic to spend a ‘Year in the Wilderness'. Mike and Susan could never have predicted the many challenges that lay ahead. They set to work to build a two-room hut – one room for sleeping and another for everything else. It took seven months to complete. Bushfires, drought, extreme heat and ultimately, the life-giving Wet created a bond between the couple and the Kimberley that has only increased with time. Together, they wrote Our Year in the Wilderness and Mike has returned again and again, leading trips for Aurora Expeditions, since 1998. Mike returns to share the couple's story in 2017, with Susan joining him to celebrate their 30-year anniversary on our third departure (see Page 44).
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE AUSTRALIAN GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY Thirty years on, Aurora Expeditions and the Australian Geographic Society have joined forces to celebrate Mike and Susan’s 'Year in the Wilderness'. On each expedition, Mike will recount their story, share his secret places and lead an 11km rock-hopping trek to ‘Cusack Camp’. In 2017, Aurora Expeditions is pleased to be donating $150 from each booking to assist the Society in it’s efforts to promote exploration and conservation.

PATAGONIA
TIGHTEN YOUR BOOTLACES AND TREK TO THE HEART OF PATAGONIA.
Glaciers calve into mirrored lakes with a thundering roar. Shimmering granite spires pierce azure skies. Gauchos and guanacos drift like clouds across the grassy steppes. Breathe deep the scent of mist-laden conifer and southern beech forests, where stunted ‘flag trees’ speak of strong westerly winds that sweep the Patagonian ice field. Bask in alpine sunlight, feeling warm rock against your back as eagles and condors soar overhead. Over 10 days, our Patagonia Discovery Trek offers small groups the chance to enjoy a very personal, guided tour of the best the region has to offer. From the active Perito Moreno Glacier to Cerro Torre and on to Torres del Paine National Park, you visit climber's camps beneath the splendour of peaks like Saint Exupéry, Poincenot, Fitz Roy, Mermoz and Guillaumet. You combine boat and Zodiac trips to explore spectacular fjords and iceberg-strewn glacial lakes. Walking up to six or seven hours a day, you relax in comfortable lodges and hotels each night and schedule in time to shop for handmade chocolates or dulce de leche in wonderfully-scenic towns like El Chaltén and El Calafate. Perhaps you prefer king crab? If so, Puerto Natales in the Patagonian channels will delight. And since you’ve already travelled to the ends of the Earth, why not combine your Patagonia Discovery Trek with one of our Antarctic cruises for the ultimate adventure? We offer a discount on both trips when you book on connecting departures.

PATAGONIA'S REGIONS & GATEWAYS
Patagonia sprawls across the border of southern Chile and Argentina, a wild, natural region that ranges from the solitude of vast pampas, or steppes, to jagged ice-capped peaks of the Andes. All of our Patagonia Discovery Treks explore the spectacular Los Glaciares and Torres del Paine National Parks, with some beginning and ending in El Calafate, Argentina, while others cross the steppes to the historic port Punta Arenas, Chile, on the Magellan Strait.

OUR TREKKING STYLE
We make it possible to trek into some of South America’s wildest, most spectacular mountains and return to extremely comfortable lodging each night. Our walks are tailored to the fitness of the group and are accompanied by a naturalist to interpret what we see. Sometimes it’s ok to be spoiled! LODGE STYLE From boutique hotels to exquisite trekker’s lodges, you’ll be delighted by our choice of Patagonian accommodation. Each night you relax in the perfect base camp for exploring the destination, whether it be slipping out for handmade chocolates in El Calafate, a stroll along the waterfront of Puerto Natales or to photograph the glaciers of Torres del Paine National Park. Talented chefs provide delicious meals, many made from local produce. All offer warm, inviting lounges where trekking tales can be recounted and new friends made.
DAY WALKS From a four-hour stroll along the boardwalks overlooking the oft-calving Perito Moreno Glacier, to treks to Mt Fitz Roy base camp and Cerro Torre Lagoon; each day offers a differing walking experience. In Torres del Paine National Park we walk up the Ascencio Valley to view the Paine Massif and take shorter walks in search of birds, wildlife and cave paintings. Walks will be calibrated to the group’s fitness, with many of the region’s highlights requiring a 6 to 7hour, round-trip walk – well worth the effort. As with any trek, the fitter you are, the more you’ll enjoy it.

WE WELCOME SOLO TRAVELLERS We welcome many solo travellers on our trips, and their numbers are increasing each year. Maybe it’s simply the nature of our expeditions, but we understand what a big step it is for many to set off on their own. To address this, we’ve developed our informal ‘cabin-mate finding' service that matches solo travellers with a cabin mate of the same gender. We’ve had great success so far! Plus, by sharing a cabin you’ll also avoid paying any extra 'single supplements'. You might arrive alone, but we can guarantee that you’ll go home with lifelong friends.
Avoid paying single supplements. k
