Quiz Time

What Is Quiz ?

According to the dictionary it means a practical joke/hoax or an odd/ eccentric person. The interesting story behind the origin of the work 'quiz' is that A Dublin theatre proprietor by the name Richard Daly made a bet that, he could within 48 hours, make a nonsense word known trough out the city, and that the public would supply a meaning for it. After a performance one evening, he gave his staff cards with the word "quiz" written on them, and told them to write the word on walls of the prominent places od the city. The next day, a strange word was the talk of the town .And within a small time, it became a part of the language.

Face to face with war. Ms Qudsiya Ali I was born in Bhilai & brought up in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. I studied at the International Indian School in Dammam. My father was an employee in the Saudi Aramco (Saudi American Oil Company) in Dhahran, a sea port-air base in the eastern province of Saudi. According to the terminologies used by the Saudi Government, we were ‘Expatriates’ i.e. ‘foreigners working in the kingdom with a residential visa’.
I was studying in 8th standard when the First Gulf War broke out. Due to this many of my father’s Indian colleagues went back to India. However, we chose to stay back , to face whatever may its aftermath be.
The Government supplied all its citizens and expatriates with gas masks in the wake of the Iraqi Army using missiles with chemical and biological warheads. The government also broadcasted alerts and ‘All Clear’ messages over television to warn citizens during Scud attacks. That was not it. We were also asked to isolate ourselves in a room , with no windows facing the outside world. After the TV antennas stopped working, we had to keep a Radio on for 24 hours, to stay informed about the happenings of outside. Despite the fact that the ground war had already begun, we continued going to school carrying our gas masks along with the other stuff. However on 25th February‘91, a Scud missile hit the U.S. Army barracks of the 14th Quartermaster Detachment, out of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, stationed in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, killing 28 soldiers and injuring over 100. Little did we know that this base was quite near to our school. Our mothers, mostly homemakers were praying just for our safety and well being. Our fathers, from their workplace enquired from the school authorities about the safety of the school premises. Much to their relief, we were all safe. However the turn of events cost a Saudi schoolboy his life. The gas mask had a small sealed container, the seal of which had to be broken before the mask had to be worn. But,the child, out of fun wore it with the container attached. It was an unforgettable experience for me as many sad memories were also associated with it.

Why art education in school?

Art Corner

By Santanu Chakraborty (Art Teacher) We all know that very few students take up Fine arts as a full time engagement however, if an opportunity arises, everyone would like to acquire some artistic abilities. When a student is introduced to art his or her perception of the world is refined and the sense of observation becomes astute and sensitive. The different forms, colours and geometric shapes introduced in the world helps the child to develop a better sense of mathematical and scientific concepts as well. In my experience of teaching art to school students, I have noticed that the ‘restless’ students also become very focused and creative when they get an exposure to any creative field like arts.
When students learn about different media like painting, sculpture etc. and play with different material, it gives them a tactile sense of the world of forms and colours which is a very profound educational exposure. Students learn to take up pieces of work in stages, keep their pieces in place for the next class and learn to visualise what shape their work will take later on. They not only learn to imagine & think, but also plan their work and then finally express that through the medium. Artwork, in any form has to ability to bring about harmony, perspective, sense of humour, presence of mind and sense of beauty henceforth according to me it is necessary to teach art in every school today. We are aware that most of the students would not pursue art as their careers. However, when students draw objects like trees, animals, geometric shapes etc. with their own emotion or observation, the creative urge begins to express itself through imagination. This is what is seen as artistic ability in a child. Art teachers like me must make attempts to bring out the creative urge in the child. This leads to certain kind of joy. By playing with these media in arts and crafts, students improve their emotional quotient apart from the developing their sense of beauty. It helps to make an ideal life and an ideal person. Don’t we need a creative engineer, creative businessman, creative mathematician, scientist or philosopher? We certainly do and for that art education is a must.

“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”
Not many know that I've been though extremely dark where I even doubted my existence. I was depressed to such an extent that leaving the house seemed impossible and tortuous to me. The pain was so bad that I couldn't sleep. I was embarrassed by my physical appearance, and my confidence was on a constant low. I started to ruin my own relations.
I want people to know that I have been a girl who cried over her loved ones, her marks; who said nasty and mean things to people she loved the most, be it parents or friends. But in this journey she only discovered her true self.
I have come to regret a lot of my actions. But the point is that I had to experience extreme lows so that I could appreciate the mesmeric highs. Eventually, I knew I had to improve. I started meeting intimidating people, started seeking help, sharing my ideas.
I want to share with the world that it is okay to seek help, it is okay to do the things which scare you. And more importantly I have realised that this is just the beginning. And when I look from a wider perspective my problems seem very little. However,I want to help as many people as possible. I want them to know that I’d be there when they’ve given up or need a shoulder to cry on. Also, I want them to know that there is always a bright side, they just need to look at it. Like I did. After all, it is just matter of knowing thy self.

The Green School Programme

New Year Resolutions

What?
“The novelty of CSE’s Green Schools Programme lies in the fact that it moves beyond theories and textbooks and concentrates solely on ‘doing’. It is an environmental education programme directed to subtly sensitising students to the environment through hands-on and thought provoking activities. It is also an environment management system that audits, through students, the consumption of natural resources within school campuses and helps schools become good environmental managers by deploying pragmatic solutions to reduce wastage of precious resources.” ‘Tiny’ Examples in our state?
Students of Eco Club in Government Higher Secondary School have adopted a unique way of utilising their flexible time available after studies. With the sincere efforts of the club members, the land which was least expected to witness even grass is now a full fledged nursery. Is it more that just growing plants?
YES. The programs and activities under green school are much more than just planting trees. They carry from air, water, energy to land and waste management. It has focused on a cleaner air, a safer environment , a better energy conservation. And guess what ? ALL DONE BY STUDENTS. What can the students of DPS bhilai do?
The world is progressing ahead with ew technologies and ideas. But being the generation next we need to remember our roots. Our mother earth. Team Trigger thus proposes an Eco Club for DPS Bhilai by the students, for the nature. If we go into details of the Green School Program, there are a million easy things we can do to contribute. So why should we be left behind? Check this link and do send a mail if you’re interested. http://www.greenschoolsprogramme.org/
